Things that made me smile today
Dec. 7th, 2006 01:17 pm1. Got a new reader...who uses bullet points in his/her comments. What's not to love?
2. Chris Eccleston's response to "Does the Doctor fancy Rose?" in this YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiN2HTExTV4 (Not to bring down the happy with a mini-rant but...Why are there so few interviews with Chris? He's as cute as a button-nosed teddy bear.)
3. Eggnog Lattes are back at Starbucks
4. Chapter 15 keeps popping it's head in while I am writing Chapter 14 to offer smutty suggestions.
5. Everyone in my office tests as INFJ on Myers-Briggs.

DWM specifically left out things
Date: 2006-12-10 03:35 pm (UTC)Could be accidental, I suppose, my buddy also missed huge things about "Doomsday"...because she was so excited about the end of the romantic angle...but it was lack of paying attention in her case. You can't really say that the DWM folks didn't watch the show carefully. So, they saw the scenes they just decided NOT to include them.
Some things are not really THAT open to interpretation...like what the Doctor might have been going to say there at the end. Or that Rose was a fully grown woman who knew her own mind...long before that moment on the beach...and finally, there was no way either of them were going on to live happily ever after. She would go on...yes...but neither of them is complete now. And if you miss that you miss the point of the whole storyline.
Anyway...so...yeah...DWM disappointed me but I figured they are the mouthpiece of the BBC. RTD has to KEEP spelling things out for them...for example...that a romantic-comedy would be crass at this point for the Doctor as Rose has only just departed.
I'll tell you one of the things I found interesting about RTD's take on things...was the outtake of Doomsday with the Doctor at the window and the Cyberman coming up. The Doctor suggests he and the cyberman run away. But, of course, it makes the Doctor seem too crass...too much like he doesn't care about Rose and Jackie...so RTD cut the scene down to it's emotional core..."You are proof that emotions destroy you." <<--And suddenly, the Doctor ISN'T worried about the Earth burning...or even mourning it...he is mourning Jackie and Rose.
BRILLIANT bit of underscoring of point. Also, probably allowed him to save some time but given how he changed the whole nature and audience opinion of Mr. Jefferson by removing that Impossible Planet snippet...I think he was aware of what the change meant.
It is also interesting to debate the inclusion of deleted scenes in DVD. Many times they change the overall meaning of an aired scene...and you have to wonder about the writer's intent. And the actor's intent...because was DT indeed crying over the end of the world...or his helplessness to stop it...or was he crushed by his inability to save Jackie (which is how the episode played). In the latter case, it is his love that is destroying him. While in the former case, it is his sense of responsiblity for the planet.
I'm personally happy that they went with 'his love' is destroying him. It played so well.

So much Word to all of that. I think there's just so much denial about all of what you said. Even though it makes me something of a second-class citizen (yeah, whatever, pfft), I've always been glad that I came into Who through the new series (and only into the fandom after having seen the new stuff) - without any expectations, emotional baggage, or agenda, so that I could just watch and take it all for what it is without having my vision skewed by prior experience with Who. Now I'm going back through the older seasons, and I'm still glad that I didn't see any of that first.
I'm afraid I can't comment on your discussion of outtakes and deleted scenes (getting both box sets for Christmas), but you've really intrigued me bunches. I'm going to have to remember this discussion when I actually do see all the extras and look out for what you're talking about.
See...this is why I lack patience...
Date: 2006-12-14 03:09 am (UTC)And with all of that baggage going in...I fell completely in love with this storyline. It took me only two episodes to begin to see Rose's (Billie's) beauty. I simply wasn't used to the idea of normal sized women on tv...and it was a real shocker to my American eyes. Once I adjusted though, Rose actually started looking far sexier to me than the skinnier girls.
Still...I found myself resisting the romantic angle. When the Shipper Dalek declared it to be "love"...I was like..."Oh, hang on...wait a minute!" But I noticed something interesting...in World War III...even though I was still snorting derisively and having to strain my credulity to believe in the love story...I found I was no longer actively AGAINST a romance. It was more like I just couldn't see one. And then...like a snap of the fingers...in Father's Day...I saw it.
It was when Nine said, "Your wish is my command." And he sounded like she really was the owner of his little jinn bottle. After that, I found myself glued to the screen and simply swept up in the storyline. When David Tennant came onboard...I was momentarily nervous...but then...he walked into the Tyler's place and he and Rose exchanged those beaming smiles and...well...all my baggage fell away. There was never a moment from Father's Day on...that I didn't see this as a love story...and I also saw no moment that said the Doctor and Rose weren't 100% committed to each other...
...and that INCLUDES Girl in the Fireplace. I didn't think she interfered with Rose...and I would hope the new girl coming in doesn't interfer with Rose/Doctor either...I hope she is just another companion.

*Tegan...Tegan was my companion of hope...I honestly could have written smut for Five/Tegan...and I really...really wanted her back. But Tegan was right for him...not like Rose is...Just like Romana wasn't right...and neither was Sarah Jane...or Jo...all of them would rather have been somewhere else in the end...but NOT Rose. Rose...would rather be with him.

I love the way you put that! Clever and very fitting :)
Now, there's a slip...to show I still love Tegan...
Date: 2006-12-14 03:27 am (UTC)She wasn't...she grew sick of his lifestyle. They bickered quite a bit. Just as he bickered with Romana. Lots of people find that sexy...the bickering...and it does make the companion less of a wet-blanket tag-a-long. But truly, after a time it's just tiresome in a relationship. Rose was so in harmony with him...she found him endearing where other people would find him infuriating. Reminding him that he was being rude...so funny. "Good! I meant that one."
Rose didn't go along with the Doctor because she was in awe of him...or because she didn't know any better...she went along with him because he was like her...they both saw their life as their life...the stuff of legend.
