In my last post I linked to an article with a photo of the Eleventh Doctor in costume.

Because I do not read spoilers, I did not read the article in question. Other people did and found that it contained some casting spoilers. I was then spoiled for Season Five.

Again...please remember RAE DOES NOT LIKE SPOILERS...

That said...if you wish to discuss the implications of one particular bit of New Who S5 casting...this is the place to do it...

***WARNING***DOCTOR WHO SEASON 5 CASTING SPOILER...re: the other actors on the beach.

Well, now that the cat is out of the bag and splashed all over assorted news outlets...we see that the Moff has no idea about security issues. Apparently, that entire beach was carpeted with fans and paparazzi. And so, to be fair, the only way to avoid being spoiled for this was to avoid the news feeds.

Still...I do intend to do that through Christmas...because this spoiler does reach back into OUR current season...and I don't want to be crushed ahead of time...so no more spoilers, please!

k

Alex Kingston is back. She is wearing a dress and a blond wig and carrying a reticule, but she is also getting cozy with young Mr. Short Trousers aka The Eleventh Doctor. Frankly, it is a little creepy with him looking like her son...but...I'm trying to imagine he has "old eyes." Certain he's going to need some "lonely god" mystique to pull this transition from Tennant off.

I have no question in my mind that Alex is River Song...possibly at their "First Meeting" as far as she is concerned, from her temporally fixed perspective, if she is human, at least. But there is also the possibility that she is a more complicated character than RTD wanted us to believe. When Moffat was asked if she was the "Doctor's Wife" he said "It is more complicated than that." Now, his idea of complicated...and MY idea of complicated might differ by a vast margin. He might view "complicated" as..."she comes from a time when marriage is regarded as quaint"...so she's technically the Doctor's mistress. He does, after all, have a history of writing that particular story.

But...since I am in the mood to speculate...I'm going to stick with the idea of the prison universe and say that River is the Doctor's jailer...or perhaps parole officer. This would also explain her knowing his name and about the handcuffs...and perhaps...her attachment to him. He is a good man...a wonderful person, someone she's come to appreciate. I would think having him forced to work at her behest...would be maddening for him...and it's something that Doctor Who has only touched on briefly in the past. Here we could send young Mr. Tweed-n-bowtie on a series of harrowing missions.

On the other hand, maybe she will be a second string companion...ala...Mickey Smith. I am sure the blond wig is immaterial. It is simply to get us all speculating that she might be Jenny or something...we will see what happens.

No...wait...I probably won't be seeing what happens. I have decided to stop watching Doctor Who if I have no happy...and I have also figured there is only a slim chance of the pony. Which is why the Moff is going to splash as much attention grabbing publicity as he can get across the news feeds. He hopes to entice viewers. But this link to the past...already...makes me think that we are only going to the recycled storylines a little too soon. Unless it is all connected somehow...Ten's darkness and River...but...it probably isn't...because that would make sense.

First and foremost I want to apologize for my HUGE faux pas earlier today. I am normally very good at keeping mum. Bad Amie, no biscuit!

Second, I hope things are more complicated than "wife" or "mistress" or "occassional lover" or whathaveyou. For all we know, she could also be Jenny offspring. Or Romana. Or whatever. I just want it to surprise me in a good way. I love Alex Kinston, but I absolutely hated River Song.

Also, am I the only person in fandom that likes Eleven's outfit? It's so much better than I feared it would be. And hey, not a stalk of celery in sight!

Well, I don't know...

...if you are the ONLY person. But, you can count me as one of the people who this outfit will definitely have to grow on. I've never been a fan of the TWO outfit. I do think this outfit adds to the idea of nerdy school boy...that could relate to "starting over."

I do hope the spruced up exterior of the TARDIS and this youthful look lend themselves to the idea of Ten/Rose lifetime happiness. Because it would stand to reason that he would have time to fix the TARDIS up...and also...want a fresh young start himself...if he'd spent some time settled.

Oh, and apology accepted. I hate to delete posts...and I really shouldn't have mentioned the handcuffs...as that was a give away.

Rae
who really had no idea that they mentioned Alex in the article I linked...I found out by looking at more pictures.

I've only seen one picture that my boyfriend showed me... well, two actually. One of 11 by himself and one of him and the companion (who, in my opinion, looks like a silly version of my sister (who dresses in 80s style clothing which is in style right now apparently)). I think he looks silly. Trying to pull of a professor-esque look. I think you need to LOOK at least 35 to pull off the professor look (unless you're Ten; apparently he can look 30 and pull it off). He looks like he's trying too hard to be geeky. Also, I would be happier with it if it weren't tweed. *shudders* There are few fabric patterns I don't enjoy (I absolutely love plaid) but I can NOT handle tweed. Ugh.

Oh, and I won't spoil. Promise! ^_^

I must say I have trouble relating

...to them in photos. I can hope that I will relate better once they are animated and given something worthwhile to do. Nothing about the outfit really pleases me...he looks uncomfortable. The pants rolled up, the tweed jacket that seems to not fit him very well...and the tiny bow tie...all seem to me to translate to playing dress up...but...clothes do not make the man...for me. And there was no chance he was going to out-dapper Ten...so probably best to avoid trying.

I would imagine we are going to get variations on this outfit...as we did with Nine and Ten...so maybe he will adopt a more fitting jacket. I wonder if this is the first episode they are filming...often it is much later episodes that are filmed first...but in this case...with the Bad Wolf Bay beach...I would almost hope that he's been called back to the same place he left...and is a bit discombobulated. I did notice he's clutching his head at one point.

Eleven's Equipment

I can't not share this picture with you.

Eleven, companion, TARDIS, and new sonic screwdriver.

I can't help thinking he's nicked it out of her bedside drawer.

I can't help thinking...

...all of the updated equipment speaks to time spent on it. Either in exile with Rose...or on Gallifrey...or simply traveling for a time.

Really, as we have noted in our Pony discussions...the very best way for Moffat to start fresh...is to have a long break like RTD had...and start over with a renewed Doctor. New TARDIS...new Screwdriver...New Companion...New Him...New Everything.

Trying to look like a kid again.

Getting a fancy new ride.

Picking up a mistress.

Added rims and bling to his screwdriver.

Pretending his granddaughter is his "companion."

I believe the Moff is trying to live vicariously through his re-imagining. :giggle:

I also like the Tom Baker Doctor speed dating...though it could have been wittier.

I notice there are not a lot of people on Torch_wood who are commenting on the American version of the episode.

Yah!The speed dating one is awesome!

I haven't been able to watch CoE yet, mostly because I usually wait to get the episodes on DVD. The reason is American/Canadian versions of Torchwood and DW are to put it bluntly butchered. I'm probably right to think that CoE was no exception.

Because they've already seen it when it aired in Britain. That's what I did. I didn't want to wait.

I've been avoiding spoilers too. However, I chanced upon your headline and got horribly curious. I wonder if this isn't a red herring. Moffat is very much a class clown and I wouldn't put it past him to set this up to confuse fans. If you watch the two-parter when we first see her, and listen to the dialog, it makes absolutly no sense. If this is legit, then Moffat is trying to lead us into his nonsense while he stands from afar and laughs.

I'm not looking forward to River Song (again). I know people accuse RTD of loving his Mary Sues (they mean Rose), but Moffat is even more guilty of this because he has several (Reinette, Sally Sparrow), one of which is River Song. I don't think I'll watch season 5 (okay I might, but I doubt I'll have the same attachment for the show as I did previously. Perhaps that's a good thing.)

I'm going to tune into the first episode of season 5 to see what happens, but that's it.

Anyway, I hope River Song isn't the Doctor's wife. DO NOT WANT.

In the River Song episodes, though, didn't she say something about, "You look so young?" I could be wrong; I've never felt inclined to rewatch them (and probably never will). But since Smith is even younger-looking than Tennant, it wouldn't make sense for him to be the Doctor she meets...

Just 'wild-surfing' and your post came up -- to assume that River is gauging the Doctor's "age" by his appearance would be a 21st century human bias on our part; she no-doubt sees him in a more "karmic" light, and gauged his 10th incarnation on his general demeanor and mien, not his simple physical appearance. As the rumor-mill is running that the 11th Doctor will be an "old-soul with a young face", her perception may well be spot-on, from her point of view...(btw - like I said above, just wild-surfing, so I probably will never see this post again, but just felt the need to comment...)

And though we may never see you...

...again, oh, anonymous surfer...I feel that your take on this is correct...as I said somewhere above in another comment, I think. I believe River is speaking of the weight of experience on the Doctor's soul...the implication is that he has aged inside...and her comments have nothing to do with Ten, who I felt she clearly did NOT recognize by his features.
