Okay...most of this is going under a cut tag. Not because I KNOW much of anything, but because I don't want to have any spoiler-ish discussions for the people who are not spoiled, yet.
As always, don't spoil me with things you've dredged out of spoiler boards...just let me ramble on in my clueless fashion, okay?
Well, it seems one source (not a very reliable one) is reporting that Billie has denied she is in talks to return to Doctor Who. And she went on to say she would find it difficult now to play Rose Tyler. But she said she has not ruled out returning as a surprise in some form or other. This got me to thinking...say I was Russell T. Davies...
*I didn't hear anybody say it. Go on...*
:snicker:
Okay...be that way. But...if I WAS Russell and I wanted to have a Rose/Doctor reunion, I would have a serious problem on my hands. Because Billie can't show up anywhere in Cardiff without starting a press riot, right? But...let's say...you have this Time Lady coming back...who, unlike the Doctor, got full points in regeneration and can look like anyone she likes? Well...then...you could offer Billie Piper something no other actress could be offered...the chance to really influence the show for a very long time on two fronts...as true love and enemy. AND...you could keep the press and fans on tetherhooks, too.
So, this is what I think. I think the Rani is going to regenerate into Rose. Or rather a sexy, slinky, totally-deadly Rose-facsimile. And then...neither we nor the Doctor will know when Billie is booked if she's playing evil faux-Rose or lovable real-Rose. Is it the return of the Rani? Or the return of Rose Tyler?
What do you think of them apples?

Date: 2007-09-21 04:11 pm (UTC)I think it's that's very large if. RTD hasn't really looked like he's all that interested in a Rose/Doctor reunion, has he?
I suppose it depends on what you mean by...
Date: 2007-09-21 05:34 pm (UTC)On the other hand, he has said 1) Rose is the love of the Doctor's life 2) He sent her to an alternative universe so the door was open for her to return should Billie be willing to come back 3) Anything is possible in SciFi.
I think there is little doubt, given S3, where they went on telling RTD's Rose/Doctor love story sans Billie, that RTD hasn't given up on the R/D ship. I think he fully intends to reunite them, because Rose is his Mary Sue and he's not about to change his mind about it. The only question in my mind is will he do it on the show, or will he do it in book form.
If he does it on the show...he would want it to have impact. Just because that's the sort of person he is...and because every storyteller likes to get impact. But, he would have a problem getting Billie within ten miles of Cardiff or a Who Film Crew without the press crawling all over it. Unless...of course, he can convince everyone that she's playing a part that has nothing to do with Rose. Also, having the Rani take Rose's form...is just alarming enough to be a good idea.

Re: I suppose it depends on what you mean by...
Date: 2007-09-21 05:58 pm (UTC)Huh. I've read interviews where he said the exact opposite so maybe he's playing with the audience?
I haven't seen much to say that he's writing Doctor Who to be any sort of ship show, but we all have different perspectives, I guess. I get a little uncomfortable with some of the rabid (hee! a pun!) R/D shipping I've seen, lately (please note, I'm not a DW shipper, in any way). It flies too close to the Ducks inability to let Buffy/Angel go way back when, but then again, they're two different shows with two entirely different ways of telling stories so I could see where I might be a little over cautious.
But, he would have a problem getting Billie within ten miles of Cardiff or a Who Film Crew without the press crawling all over it.
That's certainly true.
Has there been anything concrete said about the Rani definitely appearing this season or is that a massive fan spec in the wake of the Master's appearance and some RTD taunting? I know a lot of people think that the hand that picked up the Master's ring was the Rani, but at the time I saw that episode I was convinced that it was the Master's wife (she even had bright red nail polish that matched the gown Mrs Master wore when she conveniently shot him which screamed massive set up, probably contrived by the Master himself as a way of escaping the Doctor, to me)
It does fly uncomfortably close to Ducks
Date: 2007-09-21 06:15 pm (UTC)To me, being Duck-ish also includes simply denying the reality of canon and authorial intent. So, I would say those people who insist that the Doctor doesn't or can't love Rose are slightly more Duckish than I. But, I am openminded enough to say I'd be very interested in seeing the articles you've seen that have RTD opposed to Rose's return. Do you have a link?
Is it possible you may have seen some anti-Rose interpretation of "Rose is stuck there in Pete's World and won't be back in S3?" To me, RTD is pretty straight forward about Rose and the Doctor and hasn't yet waivered on his devotion to them as a couple. Rose had to go and separate universes was the only way...if you meant to keep hope alive (something RTD has said he intended to do). They would never leave one another and RTD had no intention of killing her.
As for the Rani's return...how certain is it? Well, I'm not talking about fan speculation. Maybe it's an unfounded rumor. I don't cruise for spoilers so I could be out of the loop. But I'm talking about casting spoilers that were knocked around a few months ago in the UK press.
Several spots claimed Joan Collins had been cast as the Rani. And then RTD teased that it might have been HER hand that picked up the ring. I think we were supposed to feel that the hand picking up the ring was Lucy's hand. And it would have been like them, as a couple to prearrange something should the Doctor get the upper hand.

Re: It does fly uncomfortably close to Ducks
Date: 2007-09-21 07:24 pm (UTC)I don't have a link but it was in an interview I read over the summer, where he was asked about the possiblity of Rose's return and he said that their goodbye on the beach was final and that he had no intention of going back on the Doctor's statement that there was no way back into that dimension.
To me, being Duck-ish also includes simply denying the reality of canon
But isn't the reality of canon that the Doctor has had dozens of companions and will have dozens more before the story is finally over and that someone who lives that long couldn't plausibly have a love of their life?
Doctor Who suffers from something that Buffy or Angel never could and that's the weight, not only of of backstory, but of stories yet to be told. He's England's Superman and a love interest introduced this late in the game can't possibly be epic. Can she? Heck, Marvel just rebooted Spider-Man to undo his marriage to Mary Jane and she'd been around for ages.
Don't get me wrong. I *do* believe that the Doctor loves Rose. It's the foreverness, "of his life" part that I'm not sure about.
To be honest, though, I've always been a big proponent of following the writer's lead if I love a show, so if he *does* go down that path I won't be upset. Puzzled and maybe and not convinced it would survive a new writer taking over, quite like poor Mary Jane, but not upset.
Several spots claimed Joan Collins had been cast as the Rani. And then RTD teased that it might have been HER hand that picked up the ring.
I had heard about that, but since I only really follow spec and spoilers that appear on my LJ, I hadn't heard if there had been any further confirmation one way or the other after that.
I guess everything I've written all boils down to "I can't *wait* for Christmas and then the start of the next season to find out if what you've specced is possible! It's certainly fascinating and would be a cool twist!
I would be willing to go along with...
Date: 2007-09-21 07:40 pm (UTC)If Ten goes to Rose...then the mythos established by RTD can refer only to TEN and not to the Doctor as a whole. Basically, RTD has established that the Doctor has been married and fathered children but feels he can't have and never has had a life with someone. Also, hugging, kissing and canoodling with companions means nothing. All reunion would (or should) do in my opinion is set Rose in her place in the mythos. Because, while many people won't acknowledge it, as she now stands...she's the one and only. You really can't claim any other companion as a love interest now that S3 has aired.

*except there is Dalek evidence that Nine loved her, too.

I haven't had a ship affect me profoundly since Spuffy and I miss the feeling.

Date: 2007-09-21 11:44 pm (UTC)As for Billie's comments, I learned to not pay too close attention to them. What I found during season two is that she likes to say different things at different times. I think it's her way of throwing off the media.
Yeah...I wondered if anyone was going...
Date: 2007-09-22 12:29 am (UTC)I'm all for Rose and her Torchwood team showing up in kick-ass mode and the Doctor going to her side for those three episodes.
And personally, you hit the nail here on what I foresaw happening with the Rani. I think she's fully capable of figuring out how to open a rift...all by herself...especially if she thinks there are Time Lords in other dimensions. And...well...as far as TV canon goes there ARE...both Romana and Omega are stuck in other dimensions. In theory, that should have protected them from the purge of Gallifrey. Heck, that might even be what protected the Rani.
But all that said...I can certainly see the attraction for Billie and for Russell in having the one remaining Time Lady look like Rose. I mean, there's that whole last of their kind thing to deal with...and I can see the Doctor turning her down...because she's evil. And then I could see her going...okay...so, you love Rose...I can deal with that...how do you like me, now? The Doctor, of course, would recoil in horror. But you could get milage out of his anguish as he tried to deal with it. And...of course, Billie then has a built in cover to return as Rose with nobody the wiser.

Re: Yeah...I wondered if anyone was going...
Date: 2007-09-22 01:39 pm (UTC)But then, I'm totally expecting Martha to be over the whole "I have googly eyes for you, Doctor!" thing by the time she comes back. She'll be a doctor, she'll probably be dating another doctor, and her whole Torchwood experience should boost her confidence. So now, she'll be a full blown alien professional when she returns to the Tardis. (I hope she inherits some awesome fight moves.)

Date: 2007-09-27 11:28 am (UTC)what! oh sorry was lost in my little delusional evil!Rose/10=smut! land.
will return at a later date to seriously think about Rani!Rose.
I wonder though...
Date: 2007-09-27 01:15 pm (UTC)I think as far as enticing Billie back...it's a great stategy because she could exhibit range and play a classic villian and have an opportunity to come back to the show at a later date even if Rose can't come back permanently. Billie could do guest spots until she was 70 if she wanted.
Then, it would give the Rose haters a reason to celebrate. They could have the Doctor discover his 1) hatred of Rose or 2) he likes her body but wanted her to be smarter 3) he really likes his 'own kind' better.
Finally, it would allow RTD do reunite Rose and the Doctor because after we see her become the Rani...we wouldn't bat an eyelash at her being cast...or even at her playing Rose...because we would all know it was just a trick of that evil Time Lady. Poor Doctor.
