I just watched Hot Fuzz for the third time in as many days. I completely adore this movie. Not everyone feels as I do. My SO loved the whole set up but didn't care for the climax. He's not a fan of mindless violence. But my love is centered around it NOT being mindless violence at all.

Okay, I'm bordering on spoilers here...so under the cut I go...for more gushing and a question or two for my fellow fans...

What I loved, loved, loved...beyond the rotfl, fish out of water, parts of the movie...was the way they paid homage to action films through the ages. Far from being mindless, I thought the violence was pointed satire. I loved the way nobody gets seriously wounded despite all of the bullets flying. And I loved the references to great action sequences from other films.

References I caught were the obvious ones to Silent Rage (with Michael) and Bad Boys and Point Break. I also got Fistful of Dollars with the toothpick and the horse and bandelero. I got two Lethal Weapon moments, jumping through the air with guns blazing and the shot in the chest moment of bonding. And I know that slow motion helicopter overhead is from something...but I can't remember what film it is.

So...a few questions...1) Can you name more films that they pay tribute to? 2)What film is that slow motion helicopter shot from? 3)And the fake out to the gravestone...?

And a final question...

Wasn't that entire movie so completely LOL funny?

The way Frank says "Angel" is an homage to The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. There were several references to Straw Dogs, and "Oh God, no" was a reference to The Wicker Man (which was a major influence in general). Oh, also, "Play time's over" is a reference to the Die Hard flicks. "Forget it, Nicholas, it's Sandford" is an obvious one. Also, the scene in the red car lights is a reference to Goodfellas. Nicholas driving away is an unintentional reference to David Lynch, according to Edgar. The end shot with the car is a reference to Back to the Future. There's also the required Scooby-Doo Ending. "Do you want something from the shop?" "Cornetto" and "What's the matter? You never take a shortcut?" and "Yeah boy!" are shoutouts to Shaun of the Dead, and the light hitting Nicholas' eyes in the pub is a reference to Spaced. Nicholas walking through the miniature village is a generic reference to westerns. The Romeo and Juliet play is a specific reference to Romeo+Juliet. The scene where Nicholas hits the shoplifter in the head is from Crocodile Dundee. The after-the-explosion scene is a sort of meta-reference to Wayne's World. The "tombstone fakeout" is a reference to LA Confidential. The church fete splatter scene is a reference to The Omen and when he firsts arrives in the Swan is a reference to The Shining ("but you've always been here"). Nicholas is supposed to be "like Batman" because he never kills anybody. Also, Nicholas doesn't like guns like Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven.

That's all I've got off the top of my head. I know I've had more, but I'm drawing a blank. There are some more listed on the IMDB page.

I haven't figured out the helicopter. I'm thinking Die Hard, maybe?

Then of course there are all the names. I loved the puns on the names. And Nicholas' number is 777--the number of heaven. "Butterman" is also a reference to Shaun of the Dead "She's like butter" ie, sweet, delicious, attractive.

This is my favorite movie. I paid to see it in the theater 10 times, and I also own the dvds. And a DLed copy. So I think I've seen in 18 times now, and I plan to watch it again tomorrow.

Also, if you want icons, I just made 100 of them.

And so does this film. Actually, this young girl that worked for me raved about it, but I figured it would just be another lame excuse for mindless violence and so-called comedy sketches. Instead, I totally loved it. I might very well want icons. Oh, and yes, I had the Shining one. I was amazed at the Silent Rage one...I don't know if I would have gotten it without the movie on DVD in the film. It is possible the helicopter is Bad Boys. Could be Die Hard. It happens just like that...in slow mo...hmmm.

Squeeing over you having so many. Wish I paid closer attention. And, slaps forehead...the OMEN...of course!

Hee, the first time I saw the movie, The Omen was practically the only one I caught. I said to [livejournal.com profile] gigglestheblood, "Man, you know it's a good movie when they out-creep The Omen!" And of course, they mention on the commentary that Billy Whitelaw said to Nick and Simon during rehearsal Never fear little one. I'll protect you and they had a "geekspasm."

I wasn't excited to see it, but [livejournal.com profile] gigglestheblood loved it, and she offered to pay, and I was just stunned at the end. Absolutely stunned. If you haven't seen Shaun of the Dead, you really, really should. Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright are wonderful, brilliant, clever geeks, and I love them to death.

I haven't seen Shaun of the Dead

...but I fully intend to see it now. I'm not a fan of horror films but I've seen a fair number as my college roommate was a big fan. I put her off of them, actually, by mocking my way through a Friday the Thirteenth Marathon one night. <<--Yes, I am mean.

So, pop quiz...I hear there are also references to Trainspotting, the French Connection and Miami Vice. I don't know where.

But apparently...the helicopter scene is from Bad Boys II. I thought it might be...but I'm not completely sure it's not from somewhere else. Also, Mad Max...THAT's what the road scene is from with the extreme close up. I used that in my film class for a demonstration of shots to set mood. SHEESH!

Rae
who completely agrees that the spire scenes were both icky as heck

Shaun of the Dead isn't really a horror movie. Simon calls it a Romantic Comedy. With Zombies. And it really is. And it is as clever and full of obscure (and not so obscure) references to movies as Hot Fuzz is. Plus, you get to see what great actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are, because Shaun and Ed are nothing like Nicholas and Danny (except for the great chemistry thing).

I think they mention The French Connection in the commentary, but I don't remember.

BTW, I love that they decided to make Danny the love interest. The fact that they decided to embrace the subtext inherent in action films makes me adore them all the more, lol.

Oh, yes...

I adored the homoerotic overtones. They were spot on with it, taking the buddy film to the slash point, but tastefully. This was also one of the best films I've ever seen for bloopers. After watching the bloopers, I really admired the scenes when I saw them. Though, I did notice that Simon is holding in a laugh in the deodorant scene.

I have no doubt about Simon's acting chops as I saw him in Doctor Who before this...and he was completely different there.

Rae
thinking the scene with the crazy driving around town is the French Connection one. Crockett and Tubby is an obvious Miami Vice reference.

Oh yeah. And they call Nicholas "Miss Marples."

The bloopers were really fantastic. "What shop you thinking of? "Dildo megastore" has the power to reduce me to giggles faster than anything else. As well as Simon's sexy dance.

Did you watch it with Simon and Edgar's commentary? That is comedy gold. At one point, they said that the line And take out all the little people you get to waltz away with the cuddly monkey was the whole plot synopsis of the film. That made me squee with fangirlish delight.

Did you notice that throughout the film, Nicholas winces and starts every single time something unexpected happens? He is wincing and ducking throughout the movie. He is so jumpy, except when it's time to kick ass, then he doesn't even blink. The best thing about the movie is that every time I watch, without fail, I notice something new, either with the script, or the acting, or references.

Heh. I honestly haven't been this fangirly over something since I discovered AtS. But Hot Fuzz just hits all my buttons. It's a brilliant script full of clever references and word play. The acting is brilliant. It's got everything a good movie should have. It cracks me up. That is why I'm gushing all over your LJ (and my LJ, too...)

Oh, the final fight in the sprinkler between Nicholas and Skinner is also a reference to Lethal Weapon. And the music playing during the discovery of the arsenal and the sea mine is from the trailer for Lethal Weapon 2.

One more. The toothpick is a reference to A Fistful of Dollars, but that was a reference to Yojimbo.

I should probably go to bed now and stop spamming you.

Well, I was going to mention a few, but I can see that pepper beat me and got all of them.

But I can answer your final question:

OMG That movie is so LOL funny and I love it so hard. :D

I'm no good at remembering action sequences and the movies that they originated, but I'm glad to see that references have been made by the first commenter.

I loved Shaun of the Dead and so I needed to watch this movie because I was pretty sure it was going to be good. And it was FANTASTIC. I loved it! Hilarity and smart comedy is what I saw with this film and so I definitely had a great viewing experience. :D

I just watched it for the first time last night. The movie was brilliant. I loved the set up and I thought the pay off was fantastic. I enjoyed that it both made fun of and paid homage to the films of the genre. And it was really cool how they repudiated the cliches and then went about fufilling every one of them (and I kind of loved Timothy Dalton's character introduction). Great movie. Alas, I keep trying to get people to watch it with me, so far no takers.

I'm another one who adores this movie. I can't remember ever laughing so hard in a movie theater.

I only saw it once, though... I definitely need to see it again!

How much do I adore you?

Oh so much. :D

Simon+Nick+Edgar are the best collaborative force on the planet right now.

I started with Shaun, then Spaced, and have been following the making of Hot Fuzz for quite a while. (Crossover love: Jessica Hynes / Nurse Redfurn = Daisy from Spaced. Please please watch this show!)

I can't recall any more of the homages that haven't already been mentioned (I thought Bad Boys 2 for the helicopter as well) for the cop movies, but there was one deleted scene where they explain the word "exacerbate"...that is a running gag from Shaun of the Dead.

Dear God, I need to print out Pepper's comments to keep with me as I watch it next time.

But, to get my name on the list, let me just say that my entire family was counting down the days til it opened! (well, the seven year old not as much as the twelve year old, but he did enjoy it) And last night the twelve year old was dying to rent it and we kept explaining that we'd buy it this weekend!

Of course, that only illustrates that my parenting style is far from conventional but we all loved it and Shaun OtD and I didn't even know about Spaced. Bless you for your gushing. I love catching references but I'm not an action flick buff so most went right over my head. The fact that they're there is enough for me :-)

Squeal!!! You discovered the awesomeness that is Simon Pegg!!!

It was actually Hot Fuzz that got me. So clever... :)

You should definitely watch Shaun of the Dead. The concept behind the movie's storyline itself will set you off laughing.

Also, you must see Spaced. There's massive similarities in the style of comedy from that show and the two films that follow. I loved it and I think you will too. (Also, Spaced has Jessica Stevenson, who was Joan in that awesome DW two-parter this season. You so won't recognize her.)

Hey, if you rent the Shaun of the Dead DVD, you should definitely play around with all the features. I think my favourites would have to be the features explaining the movie's plot-holes and Simon/Edgar's film idea board. (They drew all sorts of cute/violent doodles when coming up with ideas.)

definitely a "must see"

I have not seen this movie yet but from what little I have in ads,
I definitly want to watch it as I am a big fan of well paced (or placed) satire in movies... life...general all round satire works for me!
