Weird Psychic Moments
Nov. 1st, 2006 09:47 pmA.K.A. "Where do you get your ideas?"
As I recently told one of you...whenever anyone asks me where I get my ideas I generally say "from the collected unconscious...and I just write them down." But from time to time my beta babes have accused me of running so close to canon that I border on psychic...for example: Back in my Buffy days I would write dialogue that appeared later on the show almost verbatim.
One of those moments happened yesterday.
See, I learned last week that in Britain they refer to the name brand of soda rather than use a generic term like...well...soda. I had the Doctor drink a rootbeer and that was just...wrong...wrong...wrong...so I had to change it to juice.
This time...forewarned, I went for accuracy. I found this internet shop that sells British Groceries...and picked out a brand name soda...for the Doctor to favor. I picked it at random...I just liked the orange color (I love me some Minute Maid Orange Soda). The name of the soda was Irn-Bru. The Doctor grabs a six pack for the TARDIS stores while shopping. I wrote that at noon yesterday. At about 3:00 p.m. David Tennant Dot Com...posts an article with David quoted as saying...
A shocked Tennant said: "If my eight-year-old self could see me at the Royal Albert Hall winning a prize for playing the Doctor on telly, he would need a stiff shot of Irn-Bru."
Que the frickin' Twilight Zone music, man!

Date: 2006-11-02 02:00 am (UTC)Awww, what a cute David Tennant quote. But damn, half the things that man says are cute, aren't they? Awwwwww.

Date: 2006-11-02 03:57 am (UTC)Amazing call on your part!
ACK! It tastes like bubblegum?
Date: 2006-11-02 04:22 am (UTC)I'm not a fan of bubblegum flavored things. And I suppose if it is that popular it isn't all that unlikely that HE would drink it, mention it...whatever...but I do feel proud of picking it out of a line-up. I think it was the unusual name.

Date: 2006-11-02 02:06 pm (UTC)It's actually ME tuned into the writers...not them knowing me.
But...you know...Russell...if you are reading this...I've got this idea for a Dr. Who novel...

Hyperactivity was what I was going for...
Date: 2006-11-02 02:18 pm (UTC)Sugar acts on the same synapsis in the human brain as opiates. You can soothe a teething child with a bit of sugar-water. And I thought...given his offer of jelly babies as an ice-breaker...the Doctor might metabolize sugar as a mild intoxicant. So, a soda is like a cold beer to him...one or two would leave him relaxed...three or four, giddy...one too many and he's going to have to sleep them off. With the worry about Rose he might hit the juice and the Pepsi a bit hard.
Oh...you can start your Brit help immediately (I have a Brit-Beta, Kes...but it's good to have two)...what do you have in the way of overly sugared breakfast cereals? Were there any Rose might have remembered as a child that aren't on the market anymore?

Date: 2006-11-02 08:34 pm (UTC)Overly sugared breakfast cereals... Now, I understand from my Canadian friend that we are somewhat lacking in the More Sugar Than Cereal category, but I would say that the worst is probably the appropriately named Sugar Puffs or perhaps something Nestle make called Cookie Crisp, which I'm told is chocolate chip cookies masquerading as a nutritious breakfast cereal.
As for Rose, well, all kids I know love Coco Pops, because they make the milk chocolate-flavoured... They've been around for years, but they are a typical favourite. I can't actually remember any that have been discontinued, although for a while in the early 1990s they put mini marshmallows into Ricicles, so Rose would probably remember that.

Re: Hyperactivity was what I was going for...
Date: 2006-11-02 10:27 pm (UTC)They are shopping at Tesco Metro - the kinda nearest to a 7-eleven we have. Tesco Metro is a supermarket chain, but in smaller than hypermarket/big supermarket size. Sometimes they are attached to petrol stations. You can also get Tesco Express shops. Of course if 10 was feeling particularly romantic, he could pop into Marks and Spencers Simply Food - which is a one stop shop full of good Marks and Sparks stuff - quite posh, and has own brand food but good own brand - although I would think there wouldn't be any Simply Foods near Rose's estate, so best to Stick to a Tesco Metro. Hope that helps :)
For future ref, I can do info on South London/Inner city kinda stuff, as as I'm South London council house gal :) But proud, damnit :)

Date: 2006-11-02 09:22 pm (UTC)Irn Bru is a wholly Scottish drink - you can get it over the border, but it's something you have to be born drinking to appreciate it's sweet qualities I think.

Date: 2006-11-02 03:01 pm (UTC)It does mean there will hopefully be a new chapter
Date: 2006-11-02 04:55 pm (UTC)Soon, being a relative term.
Rusty doesn't pander, hey?
Well...I know he didn't pander to we Rose/Doctor shippers. He just wrote what he knew to be right! :->

Date: 2006-11-10 07:56 pm (UTC)It's pronounced Iron Brew, if that helps you ;)
I'm a huge fan of Disheveled, and I just thought I'd comment. I'm an American living in Scotland, and if you ever want some help with brand names or slang or anything, you can let me know, I'll do my best. I've been here for 3 years now (I live a short drive from where David Tennant was born, Bathgate - they have quite a good car boot sale), so I think I've heard most of it. :D
