A.K.A. "Where do you get your ideas?"

As I recently told one of you...whenever anyone asks me where I get my ideas I generally say "from the collected unconscious...and I just write them down." But from time to time my beta babes have accused me of running so close to canon that I border on psychic...for example: Back in my Buffy days I would write dialogue that appeared later on the show almost verbatim.

One of those moments happened yesterday.

See, I learned last week that in Britain they refer to the name brand of soda rather than use a generic term like...well...soda. I had the Doctor drink a rootbeer and that was just...wrong...wrong...wrong...so I had to change it to juice.

This time...forewarned, I went for accuracy. I found this internet shop that sells British Groceries...and picked out a brand name soda...for the Doctor to favor. I picked it at random...I just liked the orange color (I love me some Minute Maid Orange Soda). The name of the soda was Irn-Bru. The Doctor grabs a six pack for the TARDIS stores while shopping. I wrote that at noon yesterday. At about 3:00 p.m. David Tennant Dot Com...posts an article with David quoted as saying...

A shocked Tennant said: "If my eight-year-old self could see me at the Royal Albert Hall winning a prize for playing the Doctor on telly, he would need a stiff shot of Irn-Bru."

Que the frickin' Twilight Zone music, man!

Doo-doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo!

Awww, what a cute David Tennant quote. But damn, half the things that man says are cute, aren't they? Awwwwww.

That is so cool. (And a very fine quote from himself.)

Irn Bru is tasty...kind of like bubblegum. Fun fact: Scotland is the only place in the world where coca-cola is not the number one selling soda; Irn Bru reigns supreme there. I once had Thanskgiving turkey basted in Irn Bru, a very strange experience.

Amazing call on your part!

ACK! It tastes like bubblegum?

But it's orange? Aren't bubblegum flavored things supposed to be pink? ;->

I'm not a fan of bubblegum flavored things. And I suppose if it is that popular it isn't all that unlikely that HE would drink it, mention it...whatever...but I do feel proud of picking it out of a line-up. I think it was the unusual name.

You are psychic! Or, everyone just thinks you're so brilliant that they have to steal your ideas. Would being plagarized by a TV show upset you?

Not at all. I would be honored if RTD thought I was worth plagarizing. However, I think what allows me to write so close to the shows I write for is simply obsessively studying the show. Once the characters come alive for me...start talking in my head...they are going to say things THEY WOULD say...so it isn't that surprising when they say the same things on the show.

It's actually ME tuned into the writers...not them knowing me.

But...you know...Russell...if you are reading this...I've got this idea for a Dr. Who novel...

Oh goodness... Irn Bru... It's utterly revolting. Orange to the point of radioactivity. Seriously tooth-rotting as well, hence the reason why my dentist father never allowed in our house when I was growing up. However, it does seem somewhat appropriate for the Doctor... It does, after all, have a reputation for causing hyperactivity in children!

And btw, if you ever need someone to question re: Britishisms, I have a certain advantage in that field... ;)

Hyperactivity was what I was going for...

...I, also, wasn't allowed to have soda growing up...and never really developed a taste for it...though I do like Root Beer or Orange when pressed to have one.

Sugar acts on the same synapsis in the human brain as opiates. You can soothe a teething child with a bit of sugar-water. And I thought...given his offer of jelly babies as an ice-breaker...the Doctor might metabolize sugar as a mild intoxicant. So, a soda is like a cold beer to him...one or two would leave him relaxed...three or four, giddy...one too many and he's going to have to sleep them off. With the worry about Rose he might hit the juice and the Pepsi a bit hard.

Oh...you can start your Brit help immediately (I have a Brit-Beta, Kes...but it's good to have two)...what do you have in the way of overly sugared breakfast cereals? Were there any Rose might have remembered as a child that aren't on the market anymore?

I like that idea about the Doctor! A sugar-high to deal with the stress... Makes perfect sense. He could start off on Irn Bru and end up on the Lucozade! Wonder what the hangover would be like? ;)

Overly sugared breakfast cereals... Now, I understand from my Canadian friend that we are somewhat lacking in the More Sugar Than Cereal category, but I would say that the worst is probably the appropriately named Sugar Puffs or perhaps something Nestle make called Cookie Crisp, which I'm told is chocolate chip cookies masquerading as a nutritious breakfast cereal.

As for Rose, well, all kids I know love Coco Pops, because they make the milk chocolate-flavoured... They've been around for years, but they are a typical favourite. I can't actually remember any that have been discontinued, although for a while in the early 1990s they put mini marshmallows into Ricicles, so Rose would probably remember that.

Coco pops - "So chocolatey they turn the milk brown!" As the ad went. I can just imagine 10 on Lucozade! Not the nasty new flavours either - gotta be the original.

I could change it to Lucozade. What color is the original? Also...where are they shopping? Costco? Walmart? <<--Do you have the Walmart Grocery over there?

I was surprised to learn you still had Woolworths...all of ours went out of business ages ago.

Lucozade is orange ..... it comes in Lemon (bleurgh), raspberry (double bleurgh), it's fizzy, and the original is orangey and it's sold as a Glucose drink... in fact they say you shouldn't drink it if you are dehydrated because it's got to sooo much sugar in it. It was a kinda traditional tonic for years .. I remember having it while ill as a child. It's actually billiant as an energy booster.

They are shopping at Tesco Metro - the kinda nearest to a 7-eleven we have. Tesco Metro is a supermarket chain, but in smaller than hypermarket/big supermarket size. Sometimes they are attached to petrol stations. You can also get Tesco Express shops. Of course if 10 was feeling particularly romantic, he could pop into Marks and Spencers Simply Food - which is a one stop shop full of good Marks and Sparks stuff - quite posh, and has own brand food but good own brand - although I would think there wouldn't be any Simply Foods near Rose's estate, so best to Stick to a Tesco Metro. Hope that helps :)

For future ref, I can do info on South London/Inner city kinda stuff, as as I'm South London council house gal :) But proud, damnit :)

Another Psychic moment

I already used Coco Pops (The Doctor suggests them...Jackie hates the "muddy" milk). Though we can't really call it psychic as my Brit-Beta recommended them and a few others...she totally missed Cookie Crisp...which is, indeed, what I was looking for.

Sugar Puffs are the things you are looking for ... If they are on the market anymore, they did have a really cute ad with The Honey Monster "Tell em about the Honey - Mummy" was his catch phrase (he looked a bit like a very doe eyed Chewbacca crossed with a muppet). Everyone loved the Honey Monster. He was deadfamous and people waited for new ads to come out.

Irn Bru is a wholly Scottish drink - you can get it over the border, but it's something you have to be born drinking to appreciate it's sweet qualities I think.

Soon!

Soon, being a relative term.

Rusty doesn't pander, hey?

Well...I know he didn't pander to we Rose/Doctor shippers. He just wrote what he knew to be right! :->

Gick. Irn Bru is quintessentially Scottish, and since I've moved to Scotland, I just don't get it. If you imagine mixing orange soda with cotton candy and stirring, if you can keep it from exploding, you have something akin to Irn Bru.

It's pronounced Iron Brew, if that helps you ;)

I'm a huge fan of Disheveled, and I just thought I'd comment. I'm an American living in Scotland, and if you ever want some help with brand names or slang or anything, you can let me know, I'll do my best. I've been here for 3 years now (I live a short drive from where David Tennant was born, Bathgate - they have quite a good car boot sale), so I think I've heard most of it. :D
