Summary: Some stories just aren’t finished and you can’t leave them like that.
Disclaimer: You don’t need a disclaimer if the people in charge don’t finish the story.
On one side of the void it took 328 years and five regenerations. On the other side it took about 37 seconds. Jackie and Mickey heard it first. They were both so used to listening for it, responding to it like Pavlov’s Dogs. For Rose it was part of the background noise of her life. She tuned it out. Her first indication of something happening was her mother stiffening in her arms.
Jackie pulled back and looked beyond Rose. Looking over her mother’s shoulder, Rose saw Mickey running toward them, pointing and yelling. And then she heard it. Behind her, she heard the grating groan of it over the shushing of the surf and the erratic hammering of the wind on her ear drums. The TARDIS. She whipped around to see it arrive.
It materialized on the same spot where he’d just been standing. Unlike him, it didn’t just seem solid. It was solid, real. It sank into the sand. A wave splashed up its blue paneled side. Rose gave a little strangled cry. Jackie clutched at her, a final desperate plea but to no avail. The door opened and he stepped out. Hands in pockets, broad smile fixed on his face, he took a long breath of sea air and waited for her to come to him. Rose tore free of her mother’s arms and ran for his.
He looked the same. He looked exactly the same. And that hadn’t been easy to do. None of it had been easy to do. Not reinventing the Arc of Infinity from rumors, his vague memories of school lectures and scraps of ancient texts. Not restoring the Time Lords one at a time, starting with his dear friend, Romana, and ending with his worst enemy, the Master. Not bargaining his way into permanent exile. But the truth was. When it came right down to it. He hated being interrupted.
“As I was saying,” he said when Rose got within range. “Rose Tyler, I…”
She interrupted him, of course.
But he didn’t really mind. They had time now. Time enough for him to catch her, hold her and sweep her around in three and a half giddy circles. Time enough to endure her shower of kisses and to revel in the happy groan she always gave when he squeezed her. They even had time for the little things like setting her away at arms’ length and studying her tear-streaked, mascara-smeared face.
She looked exactly the same. Felt exactly the same. Exactly as he remembered. And that he knew was the most amazing miracle of them all.
Memories paled, dimmed. But for 328 years, through five regenerations he’d held onto this. The feel of her in his arms. This image. Her beautifully plain face turned toward his. The memory of her had endured through countless encounters with other companions, beautiful women, captivating men and enchanting alien seductresses. The pain of this loss never lessened. The light in her eyes never faded.
This was the woman he loved. And he’d finally come home to her.
He cupped her face in his hands and drew her into a long, deep kiss…a kiss full of promises, full of sunrises they would share together and children they would have.
And then as they melted apart, he took a deep breath and said…”Rose Tyler, I…” He choked on the power of it, trembled from the wash of it through his soul and broke off unable to go on. He couldn’t believe it. He’d come so far. Waited so very long to finish his thought. Tears veiled his view of her, almost as if she was fading away again. He took another shuddering breath and looked to her for help.
“You love me, yeah?” She said in an offhand way.
Still gently weeping he beamed and nodded happy agreement before burying his face in the curve of her throat. In the welcoming warmth of her arms, he whispered the words over and over into her ear.

Date: 2006-07-09 05:30 pm (UTC)I hope this means you muse didn't die after yesterday's finale?
Nope...she's alive and kicking...
Date: 2006-07-10 12:28 am (UTC)So...as I will show in a short essay...I still have hope. I have the wish that my hope can feature Tennant and Piper in the reunion roles.

Re: Nope...she's alive and kicking...
Date: 2006-07-10 12:33 am (UTC)Yeah...I liked that baby moment...the look...
Date: 2006-07-10 12:43 am (UTC)The baby talk...to me...along with the "Still have Mickey" before and the "Back working in the shop...shut up" after...were Rose's way of telling him she wasn't going to ever go back to the way things were and live happily ever after without him. She's working at Torchwood and she doesn't care if they shatter two universes to be together (Okay, yes...she does...she would never do that...but she obviously isn't going to give up on a reunion with him).

Date: 2006-07-09 06:01 pm (UTC)wonderful as usual. omg, just to see him again must have been so amazing for rose. wonderful, wonderful little ficlet. <33
i'm not ashamed to admit that i cried for like an hour during and after the episode last night. i hope rose comes back in season 3 in some form just to even get some closure for the poor girl. :'( :'(
See? This is my job for Disheveled...
Date: 2006-07-10 12:30 am (UTC)But the heartbreak of losing Rose (Billie) is really telling on me. I know for sure however that there is no way Rose or the Doctor wouldn't be working on a way to get back together. That's what they do.

Re: See? This is my job for Disheveled...
Date: 2006-07-11 05:49 am (UTC)I've been pondering a couple (popular) theories:
1. There is a Doctor in her universe and she starts to travel with him.
2. There are human versions of all of the Doctor's reincarnations. Rose meets a human version of Ten and gets the settled down life with him she always fantasized about. (Now, I'm imagining the poor guy's reaction if the Doctor ever does reappear. He'd have to compete with that.)
3. Rose being part of Torchwood is significant. She use their resources to find a way back to the Doctor. Afterall, the alternate version were the ones who figured out how to jump worlds. So, it's likely that they're more advanced.
Yes, not saying "Good-bye" is significant
Date: 2006-07-21 06:43 pm (UTC)1. Almost certainly there IS a Doctor in that universe...because there IS a Torchwood. And we know there wouldn't be a Torchwood without the Doctor. Another thing that goes with this is the idea of Time Lords in general. The Doctor said, "When the Time Lords were in power you could pop between universes, home in time for tea." Who says they don't have Time Lords over there in Pete's World?
2. Not a fan of this theory on two counts. First, I don't think that the Doctor's look is anything but what it is...a cellular regeneration...same soul, same mind...new body. I know there are lots of fanwanked theories but in canon...Time Lords can regenerate and we know it is something that is peculiar to them rather than to their species (so human Time Lords could regenerate too...in theory). Second, Rose never really shows a great urge to settle down...only mentioning it when they are trapped with no TARDIS...and even there...she just throws out the idea...You might say she was a little wistful in Army of Ghosts when she said, "The Doctor never will so I can't." And she certainly wanted her family unit of mother, father and Rose to be complete. But she always seemed fairly suited to traveling with the Doctor and happy to be there.
3. I like this theory, too. And it is likely that something at Torchwood would help Rose contact the Doctor. I think that he specifically warns her against doing anything stupid when he tells her "You can't" when she asks if she will ever see him again. It was an odd thing to say there...more of a warning than a "I'm sorry, no." Saying, "You can't"...indicates there are WAYS but you can't/shouldn't use them. It practically implies..."Let me work on this, honey...'cause maybe I can."

who has two other ways for Rose and the Doctor to reunite...which I'm glad aren't being chatted around.

Tyler womenRose and that includes supernova influenced time faults closing between dimensions. Lovely.See...that's it exactly...this will bother his ego...

Re: See...that's it exactly...this will bother his ego...
Date: 2006-07-13 02:37 am (UTC)YES.
I doubt they'll go down the romance path again, or if so it'd be like the 12th or 13th regeneration. But even then, I don't see it. Even though my heart is breaking, I'm looking forward to buddy stuff-- anything more shippy would feel like it was too soon. Although (and I doubt they'll go this route), if they did want to show him being sexually involved with someone that wouldn't bother me; it's just that they made the Rose relationship so romance-focused that another out and out romance would be weird.
Yeah...the romance angle is counterproductive
Date: 2006-07-21 06:54 pm (UTC)I, too, am looking forward to the buddy relationship again. It has been so successful for them in the past and I see no reason why that can't continue. People will ship anyway. People shipped the Doctor in the past with everyone and he barely registered sexually. Tennant practically vibrates with sexuality so I don't think they will need to write anything the least bit suggestive to have NC-17 fanfic mushrooming all over the web. But the main reason they probably won't do it again is the focus of the show is family hour action/adventure. The primary audience wants the Doctor to keep his shirt on and his hands to himself in canon...which works well for Rose/Doctor shippers.
And to have an iconic couple...that's book serial and even feature film money in the bank. Shippers will pay for that...long for a reunion...while the casual viewers go on watching the continuing adventures on the telly, not caring if they ever see the Doctor hug someone again.

Date: 2006-07-10 02:34 am (UTC)It is canon...it is. Because of all the canon bits that came before it.
But just for good measure...I'm hoping to give you another way out in Disheveled.

Date: 2006-07-12 01:27 pm (UTC)When she asks if she will ever see him again...he says YOU can't...with an emphasis on the YOU and CAN'T that pretty much says, "don't do anything stupid let me work this out."

Date: 2006-07-20 07:21 pm (UTC)Thank you so much for this.
You are so right...
Date: 2006-07-21 06:19 pm (UTC)I think the Doctor hoped she would move on...simply settle for Mickey. Not because he doesn't care but because he wanted her to have the life and family she'd always dreamed of. Which is very sweet and loving of him. But in the end...we see she will be waiting for her Doctor. That final "I love you" says it all.
I seriously doubt he will let her down. As you say...it's only a problem...he will solve it eventually.
Will we see the reunion? Maybe...maybe not. That all depends on how long the show runs, I suppose. And how much say RTD has in the product...because the Doctor is an icon and must go on for future generations. But I, honestly, think this scenario is what was in the back of RTD's mind, too.
