This post contains spoilers for the latest new, new Doctor adventure...under the cut...
Wow! I do love this show. I love the shippiness of the UST. Who else noticed the "Follow My Star" refrain they kept playing? Awww! I love the way Rose isn't afraid to confront things head on...going after Sarah Jane and then going directly after the Doctor for dumping people by the side of the road. For the record...some people think that the Doctor was lying when he swiftly denied he would leave Rose behind some day. But I don't think he was. I kind of think that was the point of this episode. He has been very close to a companion before this...Sarah Jane...Tegan...you could probably name one of your own...but they always left him or he left them. And we actually see this pattern play out in Parting of the Ways...when he sends Rose home.
Rose does something different. She comes back. Saves his ass against all odds. And I think when he says, "That's what I see? Doesn't it just drive you mad?" he was taking that step into love. He was accepting the idea that all love ends tragically...even the happy couples will be separated by death and no word comes from the other side (as Queen Victoria says). Sooner of later he will have to confront the whole thing, with Rose...speak the words. You could even argue that he is a much stronger man now than he was when Sarah Jane was with him...he's lost so much...he's probably learning to live with the idea of getting what you can from life...love in the moments.
No, I don't think he was lying...I don't think he would leave Rose by choice.
I do think he may hope there is a chance she will leave him...hence the Mickey. Seeing how he hurt Sarah, the Doctor figures he can wean Rose off of him. I say...HA!
On a total side note...I was working on my first Dr. Who fic...and it features the Rani...and I'm amazed at how many of my lines they used in this episode. I'm going to have to scrap most of it.

Date: 2006-05-03 05:37 am (UTC)I watched this episode by downloading and I came across this via your video. Anyway, I just had to post my two cents: I agree with you.
The Doctor seems to have a way of letting all his companions fall in love with him, and he kind of falls in love with them. He loves that he can show them everything, he loves that they are naive.
I never saw any Doctor/Sarah Jane episodes, but I am sure Sarah loved the Doctor and that he did love her in his way.
BUT, there seems to be something, I don't want to say more, but I'll say it-more, between the Doctor and Rose. It's almost as if he really just needs her. As seen in S1 and S2. Truthfully, I think Ten needs her more then Nine, simply because Nine 'died' right as he figured out his feelings for Rose.
I think that when they decided to bring DW back, they decided to make it more 'morden' and to really give the Doctor a love interest-Rose. I mean, think about it, more people see DW/Rose as an OTP then (I think) any other Doctor and companion. And nearly every episode has the Doctor protecting Rose or saying something that, without saying it, proves he does care deeply for her. I think we, the fans, are supposed to be rooting for the Doctor and Rose. I think if they could, they'd keep Rose on through Doctors Eleven-Thirteen.
On that note: I am sure there is a tiny part of the Doctor that knows it won't work and that does wish Rose would leave him, because he could never really leave her. I think it is why he does (sometimes) push her away and toward Mickey or even Adam or Jack. Yet, he will get jealous and pull her back toward him. Why? Because he actually loves her and doesn't want her to leave him and doesn't want to leave her, but he knows she can't stay with him forever.
It's all so tragic and sad when you think about it.
See? Yes, I think Nine dying...
Date: 2006-05-03 06:23 pm (UTC)In one way, people might say, "Who does Rose Tyler think she is, anyway? The Doctor is beyond her." But in another way, what really makes the Doctor beyond things like love and death? Nothing. I think he is a very tragic figure now...and in need of Rose's love and her fighting spirit.
Another interesting thing...is the way this regeneration is so very like Rose...speaking with the same working class slang...Blimey, Correctamundo...:hee: and having a jolly good time exploring...they have the same sense of fun...and I wonder if the flirtation nature is part of that, too. Because Rose certainly flirted with Jack and Adam and Mickey...and yet, she cared for the Doctor on a deeper level. Maybe Ten has a bit of that easy sensuality about him...because he is in love with Rose...trying to please her.

Re: See? Yes, I think Nine dying...
Date: 2006-05-03 11:30 pm (UTC)Yes, I agree with you. Each Doctor remembers everything from all the ones before him. So, imagion one of the last bits of memory from the last you being that you really are in love with someone. That has to mess with your head a bit and make you unsure of what to do. Because, Nine was in love with Rose, but is Ten? He's got to be asking himself that. 'Am I in love because the other me was or because it is just something that is.'
I would think they wouldn't know. I know they wanted to make Rose a possible love-interest, that was clear by the time Adam came along and the Doctor got all jealous. But, I also think they know that most fans see the Doctor as not sexual. (Because apparently everyone can go 900 years without a romantic.) So, they are trying to handle it as nicely as they can, while being aware that David and Billie have a lovely way about them. I think the UST, misunderstandings, and general 'I want to be with you, but I can't. Not really.' is already starting.
That usually happens or the audience just gets so annoyed with the angst. I've seen a bit of blacklash, as well. Still, I think Rose was more upset that Sarah Jane was a glaring reminder that there had been people before her and that there very well could be people after her. That must have hurt her, as it would anyone. When Rose asked if the Doctor would leave her like he did Sarah Jane, I think his reply was very telling.
I also found the way Ten is interesting. During 'TCI', he was trying to figure out what kind of man he is. I think he may have shaped his accent like Rose's in order to fit in more witth her. And his personality is also a great deal like hers, but I think that is more so they fit together and so their flirting can be seen as actual flirting. We've seen that Ten can get very serious, crazy, etc at the drop of a hat. Ten is a very interesting Doctor and in a way, I think Rose balances him out and keeps him from getting carried away.
Rose even told Mickey that the Doctor was more the a boyfriend, that he was more important to her then that. While she loves Mickey and Jack and while she did like Adam, it's very clear that the Doctor has her on a deeper and more meaningful level.
And I'm sure if Ten and Rose ever pick up another girl, the Doctor will love her as he has loved others, but he won't care for her as deeply as he does Rose.
