Stupid Bumper Sticker
Aug. 27th, 2004 09:40 pmI am liberal...politically. I am an independent party-wise. If the Republican party had any true compassion...I might support their candidates. Unfortunately, all I see from them is fat cats feeding on the lower and middle class. Clean air and water...they would rather see more profits for the oil companies. Good jobs...oh, those will come with more profits for big industry. Health care...tax breaks for the small and large business will give them more money and OF COURSE, they will give that money to their workers. Oh...except sending jobs to the third world countries with no labor laws or environmental protection for the workers will mean MORE profits. It all comes down to some people being richer and more powerful than King George of England ever was...and that's not for me.
Oh...wait...I see something else from the Republican party...I see moral ideals spouted as policy with absolutely no common sense attached at all.
There are many examples of this...but...let's talk bumper sticker.
Driving home today...there is this old, smoke puffing car in front of me (obviously an economically disadvantaged person at the wheel...i.e. someone NOT getting corporate benefits on the above policies). Back of the car smothered in bumber stickers: I love America! Kick Saddam's Ass! All Right or Nothing!
...and then...this one:
GOD IS PRO-LIFE
Honestly, I was tempted to get out of my car and go knock on this person's car window and say the following:
"YES, God is pro-life. But...and follow me closely here...God is also...
PRO-DEATH!
He seems to be fixated on it, actually. I mean...death is everywhere. And here's the salient point...as humans...we can't really tell which way GOD is going to go on this issue in any particular case. Some people live...some people die. Our lawmakers are human...not GOD. I say they need to get out of the life/death business...no death penalty...no wars...pro-choice...let's trust God to sort out the big issues...Mm'k?"
Rabid/Raeann
...I would have done it, too. But I figured this person also embraces the God Given Right to Bear Arms and it wouldn't be "life affirming" of me to approach the car window.

Hee! And argh! I've seen those, too.
What gets to me is also the other type. An aging VW bus/van (or an old station wagon) with a psychedelic pain job and covered in earth-loving, people-loving stickers, disappearing behind a cloud of who knows what thanks to an obviously faulty exhaust system. I mean, if you care about the environment and shop at organic food stores, why won't you fix your damn exhaust?

Date: 2004-08-27 10:33 pm (UTC)Remember that guy who tried to show academic media was liberal by running an ultra-conservative ad? (Against reparations for slavery, or somesuch. I think the guy's name was David Horowitz or something. He was an ass.) And most of the papers ran it? When someone else tried to run an ad that said "God Is An Abortionist" (i.e., half of all pregnancies end in spontaneous termination, usually before a woman even knows she's pregnant), almost none of them agreed to run it. So, um, good job proving your point there, David.
I'm a real fan
Date: 2004-09-05 10:19 pm (UTC)and politics are really difficult to discern cause/effects of--
I have a parent who registers with each party
and things have always been openly discussed in my family
and one thing I think remains most important is the intended cause and the effect--
something I am really upset that Clinton did but a fact no one where I live is interested in knowing? he raised what was a "fair trade" agreement internationally from 7% to 12% -- I was afraid of an imbalance and job loss then--to my knowledge, this was never changed-- and I do feel we have seen the results
he also allowed all three major American drug companies, to move to Mexico
the effects haven't been good-- in either our country or theirs
I live in an area greatly effected by loss of industry, which happened after these acts
he also enacted medicare cuts in a bill in 1997 that will effect more cuts to medicare (and channel the money to medicaid) and it will do so every six months for 20 years from 1997
I discovered it accidentally, when a severe injury caused me to take what I hoped would be "temporary disability" -- within 6 mons of the bill; I was shut out of 6 of the 9 specialists offices--
I became very ill as a result, and didn't recover as was, at that time, a given; had my health care been maintained (full recovery expected)
all treatment and testing stopped
I knew a nurse in a nursing home-- all physical, occupational, recovering type therapies stopped and the two per shift nurses were supposed to do the patient care (great idea, but no one did it nor did they have time under their already overburdened patient care)
my parents healthcare (medicare) has also suffered with this bill, but america is really unaware
my questions under the "freedom of information" act, at that time and after, were not honored
as a result, all my money is spent getting alternative therapies (accupuncture, etc) and I personally know of other cases, (not just mine) where patients were dismissed in abundancy, and released to nothing, no doctors taking medicare-- (e.r.'s became terribly overloaded, a wait from 1 1/2 hours went to 4, then 8, then 12--because no doctors in cities near me were taking more medicare patients)
one man was measured ,fitted for surgery, for a rod to stengthen his spine, and on the check-in visit, they told him surgery was denied, and as a result, he too is still on the public system
the year before I found out this had happened, every doctor I had-- told me they received no medicare payments for healthcare on my behalf in any way--I had had an agressive surgery, another doctor was denied $2600 in fees, and I knew that I had needed these treatments,
all the older people that were afraid to be a societal burden? won't be there
because it is the aged and ill, who have medicare, which was targeted
and now, I will spend what is left in my life in a wheelchair, in others care (and at their choices) instead of my own-- (this is the reality of the disabled)
I enjoyed my life, and would have worked and payed taxes, --willingly
thanks
