In The News: The Oklahoma Tornado

My prayers go out to those people who have lost loved ones to the tornado.

And, a remarkably silent observer took some raw footage of the birth of that monster and its march across Moore, Oklahoma. It is a long clip with a few bits of driving in it. But worth watching all the way through to get some idea of the winds involved.

I know. I love that clip. The poor pooch! I wonder if he was unconscious or just so worried he didn't dare make a sound until he was sure the world hadn't completely changed and his mom was still able to comfort him.

Holy, as they say, shit.

At first I was like, "I hope that's farther away than it looks." Then I realized just how much further away it must have been, based on how big it looked as it got closer. (And at first I thought the noise was just wind on the microphone, but then I wondered if it was the sound of the houses being torn up as it went.)

Yep! That's what I was thinking as I watched. That it looked further away, but then it gets really too close. There is something rather magnificent about that wind...terrifying, yes, but also deserving of some human respect. I think we heard both the wind being ripped by the camera toward the epicenter and some of the destruction. It helps to have the camera man remain quiet. I felt for him as he moved back and then further back.
