So, on another site, I'm discussing Doctor Who and story structure. And I started thinking about something that is plaguing Doctor Who these days: Expectation!

If I was to tell a group of you that I have found the best present you could ever imagine, and will be giving it to you for your birthday, you would all imagine something great. Something that you really want. Some of you might imagine approximately the same thing...maybe, a new car, or a pony. But you wouldn't imagine the same car or pony. And, worse, even though a car or a pony might be a great gift, some of you will be disappointed to get that gift. Why? Because you had imagined the most amazing gift YOU could think of...which was...different. Maybe it was, I don't know...a trip to Ireland. Or a box of chocolate. Or a backstage visit to David Tennant when he does his next play. Or a month of free babysitting.

The writers for New Who have mastered the art of exponentially increasing expectation. They don't just write good stories, they write EPICS. From Bad Wolf to "The final question: Doctor Who?" they have seeded their stories with hints and promises of greater things to come. Who is the Doctor? Do we really want to know? Or would we rather keep our expectations of his greatness? Can any reveal measure up once our expectations are raised to these heights?

The upcoming 50th Anniversary, they tell us, will be the most epic thing ever, just as Parting of the Ways, Doomsday, Journey's End and the End of Time were all the most epic thing EVER at the time they aired. It isn't that they don't deliver on their promises. It is that the promise itself is getting old. And each time it is made, a few more people are left disgruntled...carless...ponyless..without chocolates. Whatever they have to tell us about Clara or the Doctor at this point, has already been overshadowed by the expectations they've created in our minds. They might please a few of us, but most of us will be disappointed.

I think that's an excellent observation.

And frankly, I'm already ready to be disappointed. And it's...ok.

Well, so long as you are learning to live with disappointment, Gillie, your time is not going to waste.

Well, you knew I'd agree with you. I'd really enjoy an epic finale about the Doctor searching through the galaxy for the perfect cup of tea. Just one galaxy would do, give the whole of creation a rest, why don't ya?

Oh, wouldn't that be nice. A whole arc on the perfect cup of tea. Aliens attempt to thwart him. He examines the tea mixtures of assorted historical figures. If they ever make me show runner, I'll do that for you, Cat. Imagine the joy of all of the fans doing deep analysis on the meaning that perfect cup. And then, after he finds it, he will need the perfect biscuit. So, off we go again.

S1: The perfect cuppa.
S2:"And a biscuit to dunk in it!"

Just, FYI, I decided to abandon the conversation on your other journal. It had, as you noted, strayed a long way off topic. And there was no way I could say more than I'd said to support my views. The other poster seems pretty set in a marriage or nothing view for a happy ending. And I don't consider that practical in the slightest. Just as I don't find it evidence of anything that the Doctor is not going on about missing Rose all the time. I was frankly amazed that her memory was kept alive, via Martha and Donna's remarks for the most part, for two seasons after she'd left. But, anyway, if marriage is all that will please someone...then I don't think they will ever be pleased by the show. I do agree with RTD in this much, there is no way we can change Doctor Who into a domestic show about raising a family, it is an adventure show. However, it has had a 17 year break and a whole time war happen off screen. Opening the door wide to pretty much anything happening off-screen if they go on a hiatus again. So, fingers crossed for you to get your wish on that one.

agreed

I'm going in expecting to be disappointed as far as the 50th goes. I figure at least then the worst Moff can do is live right up to my expectations, and who knows, he might exceed them
