Say Good-Bye To My Little Friend

My glitch-prone, randomly resetting computer is going in for brain surgery. And will be returning to me a changed machine. The final straw was when it disposed of all of my writing since March.

Because many geeks of my acquaintance are blaming the operating system, rather than the computer, we are going to have a Windows-Ectomy done. When this machine returns, if it returns, it will be using a Linux Operating System and Ubuntu. In other words, I may only be able to reach out to you all via the public library for a few months. Or, I may be very happy with the change and start preaching on the street corners against Windows world domination. We shall see.

Hold my virtual hand, for I am terrified by computer innards.

I have to take my broken laptop in to get fixed and I hope that: a) I don't have to pay too much, and b) they are able to save everything, or at least as much as they can!

My hope is that they can find 6 chapters of my original writing. The new DW stuff is safe, but in a bit of computer limbo just now. My netbook does not have Office on it, sadly.

Computer issues

Speaking as a very paranoid computer user. Go to the store, buy a portable external hard drive. Follow the instructions to tell it to back up your writing file automatically every two days. I know money is an issue but writing files are not memory intensive and so you don't need a large drive. I am incredibly paranoid and have two back-ups one of which spends much of it's time offsite in case of fire.

Actually, I have cloud back up for most of the writing. But autoback up to the extra drive is a good idea. What I find so very maddening is the actual losing of data that is going on. The random resets to an earlier desktop version, generally this is to a Windows default, but the point is...I didn't ask for it and don't like it and all efforts (such as insisting that no updates occur without my permission) have helped. This is why my computer geeks say one of my hard drives is corrupt...or my version of windows is failing. Either way...that stuff is beyond my skill level. If nothing else, I just don't want the hassle.

I hear you about back-up paranoia. Until our recent upset I kept everything on a back up drive and cloud drive. But, to tell you the truth, not a lot has happened with my writing since the computer started acting up just before Thanksgiving. Sad but true.
