Jack, like most cats, goes nuts for the laser pointer dot. But the one time I tried a laser pointer with him, when I finally turned it off, he let out an audible and very easily interpreted sound of disappointment.
He can never catch the red dot. Is it right to tease him with it?
My motivation in wanting to use it is that I don't think he gets enough chances to play. He enjoys chasing twist-ties so much that I think he has a lot of pent-up energy. And I want him to get enough exercise.
I can't pet him as much as he wants to be petted. I thought maybe if I played with him for a little while once or twice a day, he'd feel less in need of petting.
What do you think?

Date: 2012-12-23 06:27 pm (UTC)Cats love to play games and I don't think it frustrates them too much that laser pointers are impossible to catch. Whenever I play with a bit of string and paper, I let the cat catch the toy and kick it a few times, while I offer encouragement on the kill. They like that as well. But I think if your Jack didn't want to play with the pointer he would wander off or lay down. You could always move from the laser pointer toy to a string and paper one or a catnip mouse and let him have a tactile finish to the game.
You instincts about how to give him exercise are spot on. Another great game is to let him play with/in a paper grocery bag. You place the bag on the side, scratch it at the bottom and he dives in to see what is causing the scratching. Eventually, most cats figure out that it is you, outside the bag, and attack you directly. But for a time, they will pretend they don't know that it is you and will expend a lot of energy wrestling the bag.
