Animal Behavior: Ducks learn what ducks do!

Thanks to the lovely keswindhover and I Can Has Cheezburger, I bring you a great video of rescued ducks discovering, for the first time in their lives, that ducks like water.

So adorable. And, anyone who has a bird can certainly relate to is attempt to get a bird to like something that they have never seen. Birds can be politely stubborn about new stuff when it is introduced. No. No. No thanks. *run away quickly*

I laughed most unkindly at all the footage of ducks being thrown in and scrambling right back out. And then was charmed by all the happy preening.

I saw this when it was posted on ICHC. It's so sad that these ducks had never seen water before! (reminds me of the videos of beagles used in research labs who had never been on grass before) And yet, they really were funny in their reactions. At first it was like...uh...NOPE, I'll just be over...there. But once one guy (or gal) got on board, the rest of them were like...well, I guess this isn't so bad...and then they seemed to be having the time of their lives.

Yes! The flock mentality at work. Both in avoiding the new thing and then in embracing it. I think it is nice how there is always a brave soul or two that tries new things. Of course, maybe there are so few of those brave souls because we lose a lot of them from the gene pool, with the trying of new things. :GRIN:
