I just asked Congress to pass the Student Debt Relief Act and to make tuition free at public colleges. Momentum is building, but we need everyone on board. You don't have to be a student to care about the future. Please help. http://bit.ly/MWcEGE

My brother recently asked me what one thing did I think everyone in America should work on at the same time. I thought of the environment, which is going to kill us all if we don't work on alternative fuels and lower our consumption. But then I realized that the true work begins earlier. We need to educate people so they can make more informed choices. As I've been telling selfish old people for years now, saying "I don't have children so why should I pay for them to go to school?" denies the fact that the kids of today must support us in the future. We might as well ask, "Why shouldn't the young people round all of us useless old farts up and dispose of us, since we did nothing for them but destroy their world and take their jobs?"

Currently our young people are being squeezed out of jobs and repeatedly denied much future comfort in the world because we have let this economy flounder and we have hogged the good years of our environment. The banks want these students to pay off loans. I'm all for paying off debt that is added in good faith. And I imagine banks will fall, or totter, if we cut this source of income out from under them. But, at this point, I am more concerned about the useless service provided by this debt. I see no reason at all why we can't provide four years of college education to those who need it. I think the fatted calf has been over-fattened. The masses are suffering endless hardships to support institutions that have failed us all and if we old folks think the "Generation Screwed" is just going to suffer quietly, we have seriously underestimated the will to survive.

who knows this could cause more economic chaos in the short term, but feels it is worth it to ensure a better tomorrow for our world.

We had more or less free higher education when I was a student. Now we've expanded the number of people going to college by a huge amount, and discovered we couldn't afford it. *sigh*
