They did not tell the press about this, but the press was there to document the returning ships and so some lucky paps got the pics.

It ís a time-honored tradition at Navy homecomings - one lucky sailor is chosen to be first off the ship for the long-awaited kiss with a loved one. On Wednesday, for the first time, the happily reunited couple was gay.

I think her shipmates chose her on purpose. So it was a lovely gesture by them all. But the press taking photos was apparently coincidental. Well, other than the press knowing it is a big deal for vets coming home right now...and wanting pics.

I read online yesterday (and I can't find the exact link, but I found another that mentions it) that the honor of being first off the ship is determined by raffle and that the sailor had bought $50 worth of raffle tickets and won the right to "first hugs and first kisses."
