Joss Whedon Could Be Seducing Me...Again!
Nov. 19th, 2011 12:10 pmThose of you who have been with me since the beginning know of my long love/hate relationship with Joss Whedon. Joss doesn't know of it, but a few of you do. LOL
Anyway, you might remember that I was vehemently against JW having anything to do with Wonder Woman and that ultimately the studio agreed with me on that one and JW was outta there. This was because Wonder Woman plays to JW's great weakness as a writer. He can't do sappy romance properly, because he's addicted to melodrama. He has to kill someone at the end or he can't be happy. Wonder Woman sort of turns on the romance between this demigoddess and her mortal love interest. Romantic death is in the cards there. And that is going to be a melodramatic trainwreck if you let JW anywhere near it. This is the bad habit that RTD picked up from JW and all SciFi nerd writers need to guard against. Nerds like to go over the top with the melodrama. We do it at home in our basements, too.
But, but...the Avengers movie...that's a different story entirely. This movie plays to Whedon's strengths. JW excels at ensemble dialogue. He is the master of the shocking twist and nuanced bad guys. He writes some of the finest ambiguous characters you will ever meet. JW knows nuance. He can make a cartoon characterization turn on a dime into a real person who rips out your heartstrings.
And, best of all, the studio won't let him kill everyone at the end.
I love this interview with JW...

....because it shows he is on the right track this time, making a movie that is sure to let him shine. He can work with actors to encourage great performances in the middle of scene shredding. Go back and watch those days with Glory on Buffy. And you can see him getting witty all up in the dialogue, with exchanges like this...
Captain America (to Tony Stark aka Iron Man): Take away your suit and what are you?
Tony (with a shrug): A genius millionaire playboy?
Looking forward to the Avenger's movie now. Which is amazing, because, while I do wonder how Thor is there, I really couldn't care less about the rest of them from a fandom point of view.
