Sur-prise, Sur-prise....Terra Nova

I genuinely enjoyed the two-hour Terra Nova premiere. Now, that could be because I was warned that it was a poorly scripted and woodenly acted excuse to use CGI dinosaurs left over from Jurassic Park. Expecting the worst, I was pleasantly surprised. Or it could be that the people who gave it an early review were overly critical. I don't know. But I liked it.
And not just because I like Jason O'Mara. Because earlier I spelled his name wrong. And I could still have it wrong for all I know. But I do like him. I think he gives a very genuine cop-like performance. Possibly from all that time in Life on Mars, I don't know. But I've seen him as a very memorable serial killer on The Closer and I've seen him as a dad on Terra Nova and I liked him both places. I wonder if I will like him as Joe Marelli? I have seen the trailer now for One For The Money. It looks technically like the book, but I can't say I like the looks of Ranger. Nor does it have the proper sales pitch, in my view.
But...back to the dinosaur series...uhm...
I was impressed by the concepts and the intricate mysteries they established. I like it loads more than the Falling Skies premiere. The dystopian future and the one-way trip, all very interesting ideas. I would have had the husband due to be executed for having the child and created a stronger bond there. It seemed rather pointless and contrived for him to serve 2-3 years for overpopulating. And the child to be kept around all of that time as well. I always imagined the easiest punishment for bringing an extra life into the world would be to sacrifice your own life. But I don't know if that scenario would play in Peoria. I do hope that the distance between him and his wife makes for some future troubles. Though, I also like the idea of a dedicated family man for once. You don't see many of them on TV these days. And they should have plenty of conflict with the given scenario.
As for Terra Nova itself, I am intrigued. The idea that the stars could be different because they are viewing them from another time or dimension or place. I had this alternative planet vibe even before we learned that it was an alternative timeline. And I do suspect something is up with the commander. But that actor just screams "Suspect Me" of something, even without The Sixes and their supposed agendas. I do like the idea of the Sixes. And their leader is uber cool. I wanted to start an immediate shipper love triangle with her and O'Mara's character. Except I do like him as a loyal Dad. But his wife seems rather cold for someone who insisted he break out of jail and follow her to a new land. I wondered why he was given the couch to sleep on...and also why he was so bristly about "my relationship with my wife" when asked about the child. And then there is the Commander's mysteriously missing son. Also that time lapse he endured. I frankly expected O'Mara's character to experience some missing time when he jumped through, but it seems like groups that continue to stream through come out together on the other side. Interesting concept.
I don't feel as if the mysterious parts of the story were forced on me. I do some of the action sequences were forced. I think they shouldn't have sacrificed...was it three? Black characters in one fight scene with Raptors. They need to employ a few other minorities if they mean to only sacrifice them. That whole sequence sort of bugged me because it seemed contrived. Why couldn't the idiot kids wait in the truck? I don't think you would have this sort of behavior if people were surrounded by...say....lions! They would stay in the damned truck and wait for the help they KNEW was on the way. I assume there will be more asinine behavior to come. But for now, I am happy enough with the show. And happy to ship someone, too. The doctor-wife should have an affair soon or ask for a divorce or something so her hot husband can get together with that equally hot Six-Leader babe!

Date: 2011-09-28 08:21 am (UTC)Suzie from Torchwood keeps cropping up on short lived US tv series though. Let's hope she eventually lands a show that last more than one season.

Date: 2011-10-01 04:19 am (UTC)I think I expected too much from the show (due to the publicity and/or hype surrounding it) so perhaps if I lower my expectations. . .
