I was getting ready for work. It was a Tuesday. I went in at 11:00 am EST on Tuesdays, so I was puttering around getting dressed. My other half called from work to ask if I was watching the news. I never turn the TV on in the morning so I said, "No!" He was at his office and had no TV there, but he wanted an update on what was happening. He told me about the planes flying into the buildings and I flipped on the TV just in time to see the first tower fall.

I said, "Oh, God! It fell?" And he said, "No! It's just on fire!" And I said, "No! No! Honey, it just fell down! It's just...gone!"

There was a beat of a second or two, and then, in a very flat tone of voice he said, "My sister is there."

Funny, I'd really had no idea what building she worked in until that day, though I knew that she worked in the financial district. We later learned she was one of the lucky ones who made it out early. The first plane hit just as she arrived at the subway stop. She was already waiting for a ferry home when the tower collapsed. But, given the chaos, we didn't hear anything from her until 2:30 that afternoon. I am tearing up remembering those horrible those hours waiting. It left a mark on me to see that and to realize what it could have meant for us and did mean for a lot of other families.
