Why didn't someone tell me about this? SUZE? Anybody?

http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/09/09/beauty-and-the-beast/

I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand...YAY! On the other hand...they better not screw this up!

1) I was a complete B&B fan back in the day. Like turn the ringer off on the telephone and don't say anything to me for the next two hours. Two because I would have to rewatch it immediately.

2) But...let's face it...that show fell apart worse than BSG!

3) Maybe they won't tear out our hearts AND stomp on them this time. Oh, wait...HA!

4) The special effects could be a lot better today. And they were pretty darned great back then. I loved Vincent's lair.

5) Oh, but where could they find anyone to rival the amazing Ron Perlman? They can't find anyone. Period! They better not put some skinny teenage pretty boy in the fur suit and jerkin. Read my icon, pretty boys!

Can Ron still look Beastly? He made a damned impressive Hellboy a few years ago. It is mostly make-up after all. But, if we have Ron than we will want Linda. And that is hardly a re-imagining of the original.

It is a show that lends itself readily to re-imagining though. We could play out the full story over several seasons and, you know, not have that lame tragedy in the middle of it. This could work. Or it could blow.

The sad thing is people are already saying that it won't work because of the loser fantasy style series coming this Fall. I think B&B is in a noble class that transcends genre. It is more along the lines of Buffy or Vampire Diaries if it is done properly. It is a fantastic concept to bring around again. But we B&B loyalists will be very hard to please.

I can't watch it on DVD. It is just like Battlestar Galactica for me. What they did to Catherine is just so very wrong that I can't watch the parts I liked anymore. Which is the main reason I have very mixed feelings about it...because I can see them going, "Well, it's canon!" Sort of like RTD said, "Well, we can't really change the basic format of the Doctor to make this thing with Rose work so we will...invent Ten 2 for her."

ASDFASDFAKLIEKJ!!!!111 I had no idea! I just fired off an email to my BATB buds to see if they've heard anything about it.

I definitely have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I adored this show (in the same way you were - nobody talk to me between 8:00-9:00pm on Fridays!) on the other hand, it got royally f'd up by TPTB and I can't go through that again.

The thing is, the TV audience would be much more accepting of the concept than they were back in the day, so it has the potential of being even more popular now. But can they recreate the magic? I think you'd have to go for the reboot scenario...the same, but different. Updated to make it work for current audiences. Or something. I dunno.

I think it *could* be done, but it would be very, very difficult. Anyway...we'll see if it even gets to the pilot stage.

Yes! We are on the same page with this one. I think it is a show that could be reworked for today's audience and really shine. But I also feel that it probably won't, simply because thems the rules in TVLand!

I, too, couldn't go through that huge F-Up by the PTB again. What a waste of potential for a show. Probably some other asshat nerd thinking that his tragedy was "epic and real." They never do this sort of thing on tv or in movies he thought to himself. In his case, he was more accurate than say RTD was with his lame tragedy, but still...way to shoot your show in the heart, dude!

The picture does not instill confidence that we are dealing with the live action version... I suspect they might be redoing the Disney movie...as a series....

They are doing WHAT? I'm not sure I could stand to go through B&tB all over again. Frankly, I'm still in denial - S3 never happened as far as I'm concerned. Or else Catherine didn't die and Vincent eventually finds her and brings her back to the Tunnels (there was a ton of fanfic along those lines that I devoured back in the day). That show had enormous potential and was completely ruined by whatever idiots were in charge.

I totally adored this show. Actually, I was in England during its whole run and never heard of it. But when I moved to Indiana, there was a staff person in the next department, just down the hall, who was very very involved in B&tB fandom and she introduced me to the show, and lent me videos and fanzines, and totally corrupted me.

If they bring it back, I'll watch it. But I'll probably be even more dubious than I was when I heard they were bringing DW back.

I *must* remember to tell my next door neighbor about this - she's a HUGE B&tB fan also!
