More about the Supernatural Finale

rabid1stI don't know that we should sell Sera Gamble short on this one. And, in fact, I think the finale was Kripke and I can believe this concept I'm seeing is his, too. There are shades of Samuel Colt in this one. More under this cut
The H.P. Lovecraft angle is really holding my attention. Because anyone who knows anything about myths and legends (and I think that must include the SPN crew), knows that there are Old Gods that predate anything we've seen thus far on SPN. We did toy with this idea last year when Odin and Kali showed up for a party, but H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard and their friends went far further afield in creating some truly horrific beings.
So, as I said, I don't think that is Cas. I think something came through the door, possibly with Bobby's lady friend. I am still on the fence about her. She is a convenient plot point, allowing Cas knowledge he didn't have before so the story goes forward. On the other hand, something killed all those people and drove her son mad. And, I have to wonder if what she was waiting for all these years was the door to be opened again. On the other hand, maybe something else came through and it answered Cas' call for help.
The set up here is just to have some likely story to account for Evil Cas. I doubt too many of the fans paid much attention to the source material of Lovecraft. But there is a lot to digest there and a very rich vein of gold to mine in S7 or even S8. Right now on the show we have a bunch of rudderless angels and a silent, possibly absent, God. There isn't too many places to go. Even with a Evil Cas, we only have him to fight then. Cas asked for help/explained himself to someone in the woods of his personal heaven. Then he went all dark side and set his sites on opening the gates of Purgatory. We do get that it is an alternative dimension. We do get that something could cross over.
And we get a connection to Lovecraft's "Haunter of the Dark"...a being that crossed over from another dimension and took possession of people...making them go all warlike and wrathful.
The story takes place in Providence, Rhode Island and revolves around the Church of Starry Wisdom. The cult uses an ancient artifact known as the Shining Trapezohedron to summon a terrible being from the depths of time and space.
The Shining Trapezohedron was discovered in Egyptian ruins, in a box of alien construction, by Professor Enoch Bowen before he returned to Providence, Rhode Island in 1844. Members of the Church of Starry Wisdom in Providence would awaken the Haunter of the Dark, an avatar of Nyarlathotep, by gazing into the glowing crystal. Summoned from the black gulfs of chaos, this being could show other worlds, other galaxies, and the secrets of arcane and paradoxical knowledge; but he demanded monstrous sacrifices, hinted at by disfigured skeletons that were later found in the church. The Haunter of the Dark was banished by light and could not cross a lighted area.
Most of all we get many references to Cthulhu, a being that is transdimensional (and mercifully sleeping) that can really give the boys a run for their money. I can see creating a situation in the show where humans aren't just slaughtered by the thousands but are made totally irrelevant. Ditto for the demons and the angels. These are beings that could kill Death...something that was already presented to us as impossible on SPN. And then there is the added element of cult figures and high priests/necromancers...something the guys haven't dealt with before on the show.
I don't know. I think it is possible that Sera and Eric are onto something meaty here. And I do think poor Cas is trapped somewhere rather than in his meat suit at the present time. Hey! All you non-slashy Dean/Cas fans...maybe Cas will have to possess a female to escape his prison, so he and Dean can consummate their love in prime time. :grin: Though I do hope that we eventually get Misha back. I didn't think I would miss him so much. And btw, the fact that Dean is all righteous and cold toward Cas, makes him more like family than all the brotherly bonding that went ahead of this falling out. This is Winchester trial by fire and I do hope I'm right about it all working out in the end.

Perhaps a bit far-fetched, but seems to go well with the Ancient Sea Monster theory, no?

Date: 2011-05-24 07:29 pm (UTC)I feel we are being set up by the writers in a very nicely subtle way. I was surprised at how subtle Sera had been with Cas going dark side. If you watch the season back now, you will see that we did have signs of it very early on. Misha did know, I think, that Cas was lying to Dean about Sam. And the wording of some early exchanges, which didn't strike me as particularly odd, do actually support what happens later in the season. I know some people think this change in Cas came out of the blue, but I do think that the writers were aware of where they were going.
I also feel that this time...they've handed out some heavy clues so we can all pick up on their eventual direction. At least, I hope that is why they had so many easy excuses for us to look up H. P. Lovecraft. Even the name of the story he was writing, Haunter of the Dark...looked like Hunter with the blood spatter...which means it would attract SPN fan attention.

Date: 2011-05-24 07:22 pm (UTC)What struck me was that Ben was reading a Cthulhu comic book, too. I thought...well...that's odd, isn't it? And why no real explanation of what killed Lovecraft's coven or what, indeed, Ellie was. I do think her waiting around and befriending Bobby could all be about opening the door to her own dimension. These are very cunning creatures when they seduce and manipulate people. So, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that she had taken Cas during that exchange rather than him killing her.
And Dean, bless him, he is always going all righteous and making things ten times worse for those people he loves that are in jeopardy. I mean, has he ever made things better by telling people that they are dead to him? Nope. And he always ends up having to clean the messes. This fight with Cas is a direct parallel so far of his fights with Sam over Ruby.
