SPN: Finale Thoughts!
May. 21st, 2011 04:28 amNot wanting to spoil anyone, I will now dart under this cut
So, my feeling is that is not Cas at the end. Maybe it isn't even Cas ditching Crowley. I think we lost Cas about the time he grabbed the Purgatory Blond. Not that Cas wasn't going dark side on us. But I think he might have drawn the line at sacrificing virgins and killing Raphael. I mean random blond chick was random, right? Why all the history and details about her if she was just going to get peacefully ganked? Was it bad writing or good writing, that is the question? Are these gaps in the story intentional to keep us from having an open story?
I mean, do we believe she is a friendly monster? And if SHE didn't kill H.P. Lovecraft then what did? Remember when the elderly mental hospital guy said that his mom, "Even smelled different?" I think that was a clue for us about Cas. I think that the Real Cas is, even now, languishing in some Purgatory Prison, hoping to be rescued by his beloved Dean and feeling very sorry that he was such a dick about everything. But before we find this out we will get some shocking Evil Not-Cas to astound us.
On the other hand, I was rather unimpressed with Sam's inner journey. I liked the first part of it with all of us confused. And I readily suspected the woman was not what she seemed. I liked his soulless Sam encounter. But the Hell Sam encounter was too quick and easy for all the build up...and since Sam doesn't do much except stagger to the scene of the crime to stab Cas...I wonder if we shouldn't have just left him howling on the floor somewhere as Dean's world turned upside down.
I figure God will do another air lift on the boys to get them away from Not-Cas, but perhaps the writers will let the tension build, having the boys play along with what they think is Cas for a bit, living on pins and needles as they try to seem devoted to him, while secretly plotting his demise. It will make for a good S7 I think. And we will probably get more Crazy Sammy next season, too.
Finally, I must address the memory wipe on Lisa and Ben. You all know that I was very much against this sort of playing God stuff on Doctor Who. But there is a big difference between Lisa and Donna. Donna wanted to be with the Doctor and asked to be allowed to die with her memories...which Lisa had already left Dean and was dragged back into a deadly situation simply as a tool to use against him. Lisa was an unwilling pawn and Donna was a woman making a brave choice which should have been respected. So, I was in favor of Lisa and Ben having their memories wiped rather than dying for a cause that they didn't really support.
