Random TV Babbling

Yes, it has been a long time since I've reviewed a television show here. That's because I've lost interest in most television shows. But I recently decided to look back at a few I've given up to see if they were any better now.

House M.D. -- Is really much the same, except for the House/Cuddy cuddling, which I find less disturbing now that it has moved away from so much OCC mushiness. However, I am not a mushy Cuddy fan and I find I don't believe them as a couple the way I thought I would. So, not sure if I will start watching House again.

Supernatural -- We are back to the brotherly love at long last. And I like it. But they have turned in a couple of dog episodes the last few weeks. The Dragon one was not only ridiculous, but also supposedly launched a new villain who will make us forget Lucifer and the other angels. But we saw so little of her that it was ultimately meaningless for us. Sadly, SPN has gone from the meticulous plotting of Kripke to the industry standard of start and stop plotting. They come up with something that could be a cool idea, but let it falter and go in another direction for ages. Then they write off the old plot and try again.

American Idol -- I wrote that I liked the new judges. I do like them. But it seems they are as tone-deaf as the previous judges were. They repeatedly sent singers with extraordinary voices home the last two episodes and kept singers that croaked like frogs with head colds. I just don't get that. But I do see the writing on the wall for me turning off the show in the middle, once again, because the singing is so very awful.

Murdoch Mysteries -- HA! Bet you weren't expecting this one. And I think I will put it under a cut so I don't spoil people who haven't seen any of S4 yet. Julia is gone. WHAT THE HELL? I mean, I knew that we would need to sort out Julia being gone this season. So, episode one didn't bother me. But episode two, despite my thinking that *I* would also make the viewer suffer through another Julia-free episode, still made me feel like I've missed Julia too much already. I find that I do like the new coroner though. Not that he's the least bit likable. But I love that he is a typical aristocratic doctor of his time. He's not a stupid man, he's an arrogant, self-righteous man. His looking down on Murdoch would normally make sense in his world, where even the best coppers are ignorant bruisers like the Inspector. And medicine tends to breed his type of arrogance, which is why it doesn't advance as quickly as it should. So, I think he's a great character and I wouldn't mind keeping him for a few more episodes. But I want to see Julia in Buffalo. I want to have her and William in touch with one another. I don't want Julia-free episodes. It is just wrong!

That's what I've been thinking about what I've watched this week.

Not watching any of those, but am catching up on all episodes of Warehouse 13, which are being shown in weekly double bill segments. The show seems to have a slight obsession with British super villains (2 out of 2 and counting) and the two main leads are less interesting than the two supporting leads (and both of them think comedy stuff means clowning), but I'm having fun with it.

Also Pete takes his top off to show his hairy chest in the opening credits - which gives me a warm fuzzy flashback to Cagney and Lacey, and Detective Isbecki.

I don't watch Warehouse 13. It has a sort of Stargate/Primeval vibe for me. If I'm in no danger of becoming obsessed by the show, I don't watch it. Murdoch is a bit like those shows though. Certainly it isn't lighting up the world with plot or character distinctions. I am struggling through the latest Primeval season, missing Nick and Helen too much to enjoy myself.

Yes, I gave up on Primeval some time ago.

I agree about the American Idol judges but I do think some of the people sent home are the ones who aren't as mature or capable of handling the pressure or frankly... too likely to horrifically implode. There were a number of contestants this year that on the one hand, I felt for them but on the other, there's only one winner and it won't be the person who is clearly edges awat from a break down.

Oh, and Jaycee went home so his balls could drop. Really, why not just reinstate Americcan Idol Kids?

Yeah, Jaycee was just too young. But one of the girls that was 15 sang like an angel. On the other hand, she did also have one of those horrific stage moms. I wonder if any of those people with the pushy mothers made it through. What bothers me more is the voices of some of the contestants they put through. That fellow with the squirrel red curls and new age hipster attitude? I mean, he is certainly lovable enough, but his odd vocalizations made me frown. On the other hand, maybe I will grow used to him. I'm really concerned about some of those who didn't appear to be able to carry a tune in a bucket and yet got through.

I've stopped watching House. I"m not a big House/Cuddy fan and this season has been completely ooc for House.

I don't know if you watched the following shows, but here's a list of what I've recently watched and enjoyed (and by "enjoyed," I mean love).

Sherlock: Sherlock Holmes in the 21st century. Definitely not as bad as it sounds. Excellent performances from the entire cast. Mark Gatiss is the reason I started watching (because he's the co-creater along with Stephen Moffat and I cannot stand Moffat, but I always loved Mark's Doctor Who episodes so I gave it a chance.)

Whitechapel: The first season deals with a copycat Jack the Ripper.
Stars Rupert Penry-Jones, Steve Pemberton and Phil Davis. Renewed for a third season.

Boardwalk Empire: 1920s Atlantic City. Wonderful historical period piece starring Steve Buscemi. It's been renewed for a second season.

Luther: I had trouble getting into the series at first but after the second episode, it picks up. A detective, John Luther, might just as dangerous as the criminals he hunts. Stars Idris Elba, Paul McCann, Ruth Wilson. Renewed for a second series.

The Walking Dead: I am NOT a horror fan, but I really enjoyed this series. It's about people and how they survive after a virus (or plague breaks out) and kills and/or turns most of the population into zombies. Based on the comic books of the same name, but it doesn't strictly adhere to the comics. Stars Andrew Lincoln.

Spirited: A dentist and the ghost of a dead punk rocker share a flat.
This was not my usual viewing fare, but I really enjoyed it once it focused more on the ghost. It's a comedy/drama.

How I Met Your Mother: I got hooked on this show during the summer and it's really good this year.

Other shows you might be interested in (but I haven't watched yet):
Mad Dogs starring John Simm, Marc Warren, Philip Glenister, Ben Chaplin and Max Beesley.

Being Human: I've watched seasons 1 and 2 and really enjoyed them. I haven't watched season 3 yet.

Bedlam thriller taking place in an mental hospital.
Outcasts scifi
The Borgias - hasn't aired yet.
The Game of Thrones: - hasn't aired yet.

I agree with you about House/Cuddy. While I was never anything but a House/Wilson shipper, I didn't think I would dislike House/Cuddy as much as I do. I liked her a lot, but I don't like her or House as a couple.

Sherlock is one of my favorite shows. I have a Sherlock community called 3 patch problems, which I have been seriously neglecting. However, I recommend Sherlock to everyone, so I'm happy to hear that you like it. We will probably have to face a Mrs. Watson some time soon, I imagine. But I still like the idea of John/Sherlock shipping.

Being Human interests me as does Mad Dogs, but I am trying to limit my viewing and with Being Human, I'm not sure if I should watch the British original or the American remake.

Whitechapel and Luther have both caught my eye. I did watch Downton Abbey for period work, but I thought Boardwalk Empire was more of a gangster series and avoided it on principle. Of course, I was a big fan of Wiseguy back in the day.

I definitely will check out some of your other picks. And I look forward to the Borgias. Madonna of the Seven Hills is one of my favorite books.

I didn't think I would dislike House/Cuddy as much as I do. I liked her a lot, but I don't like her or House as a couple.

I agree completely. They could done a House/Cuddy relationship in a more realistic way, but the writers have ignored all the issues the couple has had. I've read comments from some Huddy shippers even that are now turned off of the pairing and want it to end now.

I'm glad to hear you're not opposed to Sherlock/John shipping. I started shipping Holmes/Watson after I read the books so shipping Sherlock/John came naturally (and thankfully the writing and the chemistry between the actors is good).

I don't know if John will get married, but I can see him and Sarah living together. I like Sarah as a character, but not with John. Or Gatiss and Moffat could have John and Sarah date, but not get married or live together.

I loved Downton Abbey. I can't wait for the second series.

Boardwalk Empire does deal with gangsters, but there are female characters too and you get to see their lives as well. So while it does deal with gangsters, I think it's about the time period and more about the political corruption.

I haven't watched the American version of Being Human, but I have watched the British version and I really enjoyed it. The British version is 8 episodes per season. I don't know how long Syfy's version of Being Human is. I'm assuming it's around 8 episodes as well, but I could be wrong.

And of course the last season of Secret Diary of a Call Girl is airing now. I haven't watched since season 1, but I plan to catch up on that one as well.

I really wish Billie and David would work together again. I would definitely watch anything that they would do together.
