I have been inspired to create a MEME! Spread it far and wide, but let me know if you answer it because I'd love to see your answers.

It is about things that are supposedly eaten, but which might not be eaten that often.

When was the last time you had...

1) Campbell's Condensed Soup as soup (not in a recipe).

2) Cotton Candy

3) Homemade Pancakes (not frozen or restaurant, but can be from a mix)

4) Wax Candy (coke bottles, lips, whatever).

5) A Corn Dog

6) Homemade Shortbread (not from a store or mix).

7) Hamburger or Tuna Helper

8) Sloppy Joes/Manwiches

9) Malted Milk Balls

10) Toasted Marshmallows (5 bonus points if you made S'mores).

There you go!

And now...to answer my own Meme

1) Sometime in my childhood, I think. No! Wait! About 3 years ago, I had some chicken & stars soup during a cold.

2) I only had it once at a carnival in Texas...1987 or thereabouts. Hated it.

3) Wow! Uhm...let's see. It has been probably 12 years or so. My sister made some.

4) I did buy a set of coke bottles and some wax lips from a local, nostalgia candy store...about 10 years ago.

5) I think the last corn dog I had was when I was about 12. I did consider eating one the other day though.

6) Again, my sister made some for me when I was about 18. Well, we sort of did it together. It was too short both times we tried it and fell apart.

7) Never as an adult. I have thought about it from time to time and I do remember that I liked the Cheeseburger variety as a child.

8) I ate a lot of them in college.

9) Probably in the last 2 years. I love malted milk balls. But they aren't as chocolate-y as they used to be.

10) I'm planning to toast some over the smoldering remains of our democracy in a few years. But the last time I had them was...oh...let's see...about 4 years ago I had one at a family cookout. I didn't not make S'mores from it though, so no bonus points for me.

1) Campbell's Condensed Soup as soup (not in a recipe).

I may have had it made for me as a kid, but I've never made it for myself. (Not in a recipe.)

2) Cotton Candy

I dunno... as a kid, I guess?

3) Homemade Pancakes (not frozen or restaurant, but can be from a mix)

From a mix, a few months ago.

4) Wax Candy (coke bottles, lips, whatever).

People actually eat those? Never bought any, but might have gotten some for Hallowe'en once. Don't remember.

5) A Corn Dog

Never.

6) Homemade Shortbread (not from a store or mix).

Never.

7) Hamburger or Tuna Helper

Never.

8) Sloppy Joes/Manwiches

As a kid.

9) Malted Milk Balls

As a kid.

10) Toasted Marshmallows (5 bonus points if you made S'mores).

Two years ago, at my dad's. We made S'mores.

I need to preface my answers with the fact that I'm currently pre-diabetic and eat low carb (sugar and starches are carbs). That will make my answers a little dull.

1) Campbell's Condensed Soup as soup (not in a recipe).

I cook with it all the time, but the last time I had *condensed* soup out of a can? Jeez, I'd have to guess maybe 10 years ago. If you said any canned soup, I'd guess 4-5 years ago.

2) Cotton Candy

I used to love cotton candy, so I'd say 3 years ago. I had my stroke 3 years ago and in the hospital, I was was diagnosed as prediabetic. So, I haven't had it since, but I used to buy it every couple of months from the store.

3) Homemade Pancakes (not frozen or restaurant, but can be from a mix)

I was never a pancake fan, but rather a waffle fan. However, I used to make them time to time for my husband. I'd say ~3 years ago.

4) Wax Candy (coke bottles, lips, whatever).

Hmm, not since I was a kid. (I turned 40 this month.)

5) A Corn Dog

Never. I hate hot dogs.

6) Homemade Shortbread (not from a store or mix).

My mother likes to bake, but not usually shortbread. I'd say sometime in the '90's.

7) Hamburger or Tuna Helper

Three years ago. Though I make a soup can version with Dreamfield's pasta (low carb pasta). Though, I don't do tuna because my husband doesn't care for it. I make hamburger and chicken versions.

I love tuna, though.

8) Sloppy Joes/Manwiches

Hmm, I'd say +10 years ago.

9) Malted Milk Balls

Probably 3-4 years ago. Some Halloween before my prediabetes.

10) Toasted Marshmallows (5 bonus points if you made S'mores).

I loved to toast marshmallows over the gas stove. I tried s'mores over the stove roughly 5 years ago, but decided they were too messy. But, I was toasting marshmallows all the way up to 3 years ago.

Look at you living the life! I can understand the pre-diabetes thing. If you look at my answers, lots of mine were years ago, because I've got health issues that keep me from eating this kind of food.

What brought this MEME to mind was a couple of conversations with my sister about foods we used to eat as children. And I never use Campbell's condensed soup anymore for recipes...so even though I make a green bean style casserole it isn't anything like the ones mom used to make. Then we sort of turned to the idea of toasted marshmallows because we were both girl scouts and she and her family do a lot of bonfires and grilling. But still, we don't do S'mores anymore.

Curse your chauvinistic American meme. Where are the Salt'n'Shake crisps and the Black Jacks and the sherbert fountains?

1) Campbell's Condensed Soup as soup (not in a recipe).

Hmm – sometime prior to 1989. I vaguely recall trying to stir in water to make it drinkable, but I can’t say it was fun.

2) Cotton Candy

This is really called candy floss. And sometime in my extreme youth, at the circus.

3) Homemade Pancakes (not frozen or restaurant, but can be from a mix)

My mother made them each Shrove Tuesday, but I wasn’t a fan. I have never made one myself.

4) Wax Candy (coke bottles, lips, whatever).

Hmm, I recall the coke bottle ones. My weakness was the stringy snakes though, and sugar mice, which are not the same thing at all.

5) A Corn Dog

Never.

6) Homemade Shortbread (not from a store or mix).

I made shortbread with a friend at school as part of the Home Economics course. Then we invited two teachers over to eat it (and the poor bastards had to come, in their lunch break). I must have been about 14, and I don’t recall ever making it again.

7) Hamburger or Tuna Helper

I’m not completely sure what these are.

8) Sloppy Joes/Manwiches

Ditto.

9) Malted Milk Balls

We have Maltesers, which are malted milk balls covered in chocolate. They usually show up on the table at Christmas, at some point.

10) Toasted Marshmallows (5 bonus points if you made S'mores).

I have tasted a toasted marshmallow, at Brownies I think. Hate marshmallows. Hate them with a fiery passion.

Maltesers and Candy Floss! Check!

I knew there was a reason I have taken you to my bosom (other than your appreciation of my bosom, of course). You hate marshmallows. So do I. I don't often allow this prejudice to show as it is the candy equivalent of kicking kittens. But I must constantly stress to people that I do not wish to try any of the many concoctions that are made with marshmallow fluff on this side of the pond. They put it in Jello and Rice Krispie Treats and they sandwich it between graham cracker cookies. They stick them in your hot cocoa. It's really hard to get away from marshmallow.

Ooh, a meme! I'm bored so this is a good post to find. However, a lot of these foods are not to familiar to me...

1. I don't remember ever having it here - I think Heinz tomato soup is best! I did have it a couple of times when I spent a semester in America though.

2. I'm not a big fan of candy floss, so it was probably the last time I was with my friend Sian, who *is* a big fan!

3. The last time we made English pancakes was probably for Pancake Day in February. I make the batter up and Andrew does the cooking as he's better at it than me.

4. We ate a bag of Jelly Babies recently and I'll always grab a gummy bear if it's around. That sounds positively cannibalistic!

5. I think I've had one on a stick once, but I wasn't very impressed with it...

6. Hmm, possibly the last Girl Guide cake sale or at camp. We get great cake at camp!

7. Never! I still don't know what it is!

8. Possibly when I was in the States, but I'm still not sure what a sloppy joe is. And what's a manwich?

9. I saw them but I don't think I ever tried them. I'll have to put them on my list for the next time I go over the pond.

10. In Smores! At the Brownie campfire a couple of weeks ago. I got mine perfect and was rather pleased!

I'll give it a whirl!

1) Campbell's Condensed Soup as soup (not in a recipe).
Last week, I think. I eat a fair amount of soup and I'm weird and like the crappy Campbell's versions better than the "homemade" styles or actual homemade soup (unless it's something like squash or broccoli).

2) Cotton Candy
I don't remember exactly...had to have been when I was a kid at the fair or circus or something.

3) Homemade Pancakes (not frozen or restaurant, but can be from a mix)
I think it was at my sister's house last year. I can never get them to turn out right, so I never make them myself. I did make a lot of "faux" pancakes this past year, but I don't think they count (cottage cheese & egg concoction).

4) Wax Candy (coke bottles, lips, whatever).
Yuck! I think I might have tried this as a kid, but never liked any of them.

5) A Corn Dog
A couple of years ago. And I couldn't finish it, it was so awful. :P

6) Homemade Shortbread (not from a store or mix).
Never. I've never actually known anyone who made homemade shortbread.

7) Hamburger or Tuna Helper
Last year or the year before, maybe?

8) Sloppy Joes/Manwiches
Never (that I'm aware of).

9) Malted Milk Balls
A couple of years ago.

10) Toasted Marshmallows (5 bonus points if you made S'mores).
Wow. I totally don't remember. It was undoubtedly for S'mores (why else would you toast marshmallows?? LOL)....maybe at one of the tailgating parties a decade ago? I really don't remember.

I got nostalgic for some old favorites and actually made a modified version of 5-Can Casserole last week. It's tuna fish, chicken noodle soup, cream of mushroom soup, condensed milk, and chinese noodles. A staple in my house when we were growing up. I ended up using cream of chicken soup ('cause I had it, though it didn't go well with the tuna), regular milk, and threw in a package of peas to try to make it semi-healthy. ;)

Hot dogs were the other thing I used to eat all the time, even up to the last couple of years, but now I can't stand them. Bleh.

We had horrible eating habits in my household on one level. We ate hot dogs and bologna and fried bread and things on a stick. I hated the wax lips and other waxy filled with sugar foods myself. But they only came around at Halloween or at carnivals and such. But I suppose I had some good foundations set by my family, too. My love of veggies. And hot tea. And we ate slow cooked porridge for breakfast every morning. We also ate lots of beans and fruit.

For the most part, I wasn't allowed to have sugar--though this backfired into a serious addiction to rich foods as an adult. I remember vividly my first taste of really good chocolate...I was in seventh grade...and how my brain went to a very happy place and stayed there. I think it is probably something you don't want to restrict totally for kids...but then...on the other hand...my little niece is a born addict and they use the magic pills (M&Ms) to pacify her.

Maybe some of us just have biochemistry that responds with a hallelujah to chocolate. Something about the rich, creamy and not too sweet state of it makes my whole system light up like a roman candle. And I can see that happen to my little niece, too. It worries me for her.

We weren't allowed much sugar, either, and I've always wondered if that's what triggered my rabid sugar obsession from a young age (oh my lord, the stuff I did - eating frosting out of the tub, trying to disguise having taken yet another piece of cake, etc.). Other moms would have cookies and stuff for their kids every day. If I'd had that, would I be better or worse? I just don't know. Thankfully, I've outgrown the worst of it, but I definitely still have sugar cravings.

Weirdly, I actually don't like chocolate as much as I used to. At least the cheapie stuff that is available around here (good chocolate is definitely a different story). I mean, I like it, but I really only want a little of it, which is a good thing. I'm finding myself more drawn to fruity stuff these days. Crap like those pure sugar orange slices and Starburst. Again, at least it doesn't take much to satisfy me these days, so it's not doing any damage.

You are correct. Chocolate has taken a real downward turn. It is because there was a great chocolate blight. Many of the original plants were killed and, in fact, if chocolate hadn't been exported to Africa it might have gone extinct. I think they are trying to bring it back...but the global chocolate market was crippled for a time and so all of the cheaper candy makers cut way back on it and added lots of filler ingredients.

I never really developed much taste for sugar...despite the denial of it. I don't like soda or cotton candy or those hard candies or marshmallows. Hence my list of things I never touched. What I enjoy about chocolate and coffee is the bitterness. Of course, there is lots of sugar used to mask that bitterness, but I like some of it to come through...so I like dark chocolates. My main problem is I can't quit eating it. As of this moment...the longest I've ever gone without daily chocolate is six weeks. I usually last about three days. It is a very strong craving and one of the reasons I don't know about weight loss surgery. I mean, I only eat the chocolate 3 bits at a time...I just keep going back every few hours until there is none left. Of course, as I've mentioned...there is the dumping syndrome which would surely be triggered by all of that fat and sugar.

Ugh, I really don't like bitter stuff at all. It's why I've never been a coffee drinker. Don't like dark chocolate, either, even though it's supposed to be good for you.

You'd probably be okay right after surgery, because you don't really want to eat anything at all. I actually got really sick of sweet flavors because of all that protein powder and the like. Yick.

However, I understand your concern. It doesn't take much to set you off in the beginning, so if you get tempted, you'd probably pay for it. I'm at the point now where it takes a hell of a lot to make me dump...which is not actually a good thing. Yeah, I can eat pretty much anything (if I can get it down - still the biggest problem), but that also means I'm back to having to pay attention to what I'm eating. I hadn't dumped in three months but finally managed to do it last week after gorging myself on sugar. At least it's a prompt (and painful) reminder that you reeeeeeeeally don't want to do that. ;)

Hmm, except for Cotton Candy and Homemade Pancakes none of these. Wait, possibly a corn dog if it's some kind of dough around a sausage on a stick? I had one of those in Japan but it was called American dog, I think.

The last two sound great though.

A corn dog is in fact cornmeal wrapped around a hot dog on a stick. So, it is possible you had one. I used to like them, but I haven't had one in next to forever. I would imagine they are not quite as good as they were in my youth. I am proud of your eating habits. Though I suspect you simply live somewhere that doesn't have these sorts of foods. I wonder what they call a Sloppy Joe in England? Surely they do have them. Probably it is called a loose meat sandwich or something. It is loose meat (ground beef usually) in a soppy tomato sauce...on a bun. The manwich (which was the sauce in a can) was really pretty darned tasty. Though I doubt it was good for you.
