Go vote Spuffy...Please!
Mar. 12th, 2004 12:35 amWell...I was going to post this long involved essay on why Spuffy is the only canon ship and outline all the many, many, many places where the characters of Spike and Buffy and Angel would have to all be brain dead before any other answer works in our story so far...but then I thought...HEY! You've all heard it before...so instead...let me just make one point...
Joss Whedon is supposedly a GREAT writer...with all this genius plotting ability...yes? Every detail laid out...all things with meaning?
Then...someone please explain what reason there could POSSIBLY be for Spike not telling Buffy he's alive other than...that's our BIG moment? I mean...yes...Spike may want to give her freedom or whatever...darn noble of him...but THAT premise automatically assumes Buffy CARES and would somehow NOT HAVE her freedom if Spike turned up alive. If indeed Buffy DOESN'T love Spike...then all of his hiding out in L.A. is pretty darned pointless...isn't it?
Because Spike rushing off to Rome will result in...absolutely NOTHING! She will go..."Oh, so you lived...that's nice. Have you met, Joel, my new boyfriend? Isn't he hot?" You could handle it in two seconds of NON-SMG screen time. Spike could call her...chat for a minute on the phone...and END OF STORY! You don't need to go on and on with these stupid out-of-character excuses for not telling her he's alive...there is absolutely no suspense in the Buffy/Angel ending or the Buffy REALLY, REALLY doesn't love Spike ending...nor would there be a logical reason for Spike's story-so-far.
UNLESS the S/B reunion IS going to be a big emotional moment.
So...either Buffy loves Spike and all that is keeping them apart is her NOT KNOWING he's alive...or everyone on the show is insane...or Joss Whedon is just a hack writer jerking around his audience by milking a lame non-love triangle to literal death.
Let's go with Buffy loves Spike! You can cast a vote for sanity and consistency in writing here:

Date: 2004-03-11 10:19 pm (UTC)I hate to say it, but... Unfortunately options B and C aren't totally implausible. I especially suspect C, because it reminds me of past lame non-payoffs... Buffy "coming back wrong," oh wait, no... ghost!Joyce's "she won't choose you" which never came true... or, heck, the rapport I saw develop between Buffy and Spike pre-sex, which they seemed hellbent to convince us didn't exist.
And in the B column, I'll take "out of character-arc actions by Angel and Buffy in EoD and Chosen" for 200, Alex, not to mention the Daily Double: the women who DID NOTHING but "watch the Watchers" for thousands of years, in a pyramid, in Sunnydale, and never did anything to help the Slayers, and didn't even serve as a decent exposition fairy, since she didn't say anything we didn't know already.
But, yeah. I voted. Sigh. (Enough with the Joel already!)

But I LOVE JOEL...
Date: 2004-03-11 10:59 pm (UTC)I was just playing devil's advocate and assuming he's REALLY the plotting genius people say he is...and there is some PLOT reason for Spike's behavior...something meaningful in the context of the show.
Rae...
...who will try very hard not to bring up Joel again...
