So, Doctor Who is going to have a "split season" next year. With a cliffhanger for the spring and another run in the fall. This will allow Moff to do his Sherlock sooner than expected. Proof, I think, that the BBC would rather have Sherlock. But it is a compromise that shows that the BBC is still committed to the Doctor Who team for next year. And, of course, in yawn-able fashion, Moff has promised us the "cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers"...AGAIN. If only that were true and this would be the last time they sought to oversell something! SIGH!

And, again, again...uhm...it all hangs on how much of a change we see happen to the Doctor and his crew from the awful, emotionless and strained S5. And, of course, much depends on how many viewers Doctor Who continues to hemorrhage in this next season.

Really?

Photobucket

That is all!

Oh, is it sad that I don't give a crap for DW anymore? That's sad considering the fact that I still remember Tom Baker.

I think everything will depend upon whether or not Moff can quickly get us to give a rat's arse about his characters. Amy was a broken muppet because everyone kept disappearing? Well, we had a gigantic reset. If she's still crap to Rory and doesn't have a noticable character change, this is going to be hard to stomach. Plus, the big fear is this season is going to be All About River and Silence. Done well, it could be interesting. But the first half of the last series gives me serious doubts.

I don't think River is that interesting. I say that completely without malice toward her character. I just don't find her very compelling to watch. Some people do, I imagine. But so far, she's relied almost exclusively on the patent pending "BIG MOFF BUILD UP." The idea that she has the best secret ever and once we find out what it is our world is going to rock. Well, I've thought out what it COULD be and so has every other fan...and so Moff is simply setting himself up to fail us all.

I suppose I really doubt his ability to deliver. What I wonder is about the Cumberbatch casting. I would just say right now, I would like him to be the Doctor's smarter, older brother. ALA Mycroft to Holmes. After all, it is canon that the Doctor had a brother. So, why not bring him back in some capacity? He could have chosen a much more solitary and contemplative life than the Doctor...or perhaps he chose to be human. Oh, the irony of it all. Anyway...that's the cliffhanger I would like to see mid-S6...the Brother.

Right now, River is window dressing. She has the potential to be interesting, but I doubt we'll get it, especially in Moff's hands because he's the Michael Crichton of the BBC. All clever plot, cardboard characters, not worth watching again once you learn the my-aren't-I-clever-twist. And that's a pity because I actually like Alex quite a bit and I know she's got the acting chops to make me care.

I hate that Moff is heading towards that final nail in the coffin as we inch closer to the big anniversary. Question is, will the Beeb replace him as show runner before he drives their most lucrative franchise into the ground? Let Moff do Sherlock. Give Who to someone who has a better grasp on the characters and his/her audience.

On the other hand, perhaps the BBC wants Doctor Who to fail. It does cost a bit. And if they get a very popular Doctor they will have to pay him serious money to stay on with the show more than a couple of years. IF they keep Moff and Matt, they will have a good reason to retire the show after the anniversary. The fans won't be able to complain that the BBC didn't care about the show, because after all of the hoopla about Matt and Moff on the fandom sites, the BBC can say that they did the best they could.

And, in fact, this could very well be the best they can do. I am not sure Moff has the ability to deliver on his big pushes in the press. If he played it closer to his chest, perhaps we would learn to enjoy what he DOES have to offer. But his "SEXIEST COMPANION EVA!" line fell very flat with Amy. I know some people do find her sexy. But I find her to be an annoying muppet and really not my type, I suppose. I don't think she's sexy at all. She is leggy. And she has a lovely coloring. But that's about all she has in my book. Of course, my book is probably really biased by her bad acting.

Anyway, you are right about Alex. But so far, I've not seen Alex called upon to stretch her acting muscles. She's so over the top that it's almost like watching Captain Jack in drag. Sorry!

And you've just hit the nail square on the head. She is EXACTLY like Jack before RTD got his hands on him and actually gave him a soul. Smug, mysterious, good looking, well-aware of his/her sexual charms, smarmy, deus ex machina technology, time traveller credentials, and questionable morals. It's easy to forget that about Jack's roots because of the journey his character has taken.

BUT and here's a BIG BUT: Jack is proof that you can take the trademarked Moff caricature and turn it into a finely nuanced character with more layers than an onion in a more-accomplished writer's hands.

That would be the only thing that could get me interested in Doctor Who again. Season 5 doesn't interest me that much. I suppose I'll watch it someday. It's kind of sad that during seasons 1-4, I couldn't wait to watch the next episode of Doctor Who, but now I don't care (to watch the current season).

I rolled my eyes so hard this morning when I read about the split season and the mid-season cliffhanger of awesome. I hate split seasons to begin with and this isn't helping me be at all hopeful about next season of Who.
