Sound of Madness

Yeah, I get it,
You're an outcast.
Always under attack.
Always coming in last,
Bringing up the past.
No one owes you anything.
I think you need a shotgun blast,
A kick in the ass,
So paranoid. . .
Watch your back!!

Oh my, here we go...

Another lose cannon gone bi-polar
Slipped down, couldn't get much lower.
Quicksand's got no sense of humor.
I'm still laughing like hell.
You think that by crying to me
Looking so sorry that I'm gonna believe,
You've been infected by a social disease.
Well, then take your medicine.

[Chorus:]
I created the Sound of Madness.
Wrote the book on pain.
Somehow I'm still here,
To explain,
That the darkest hour never comes in the night.
You can sleep with a gun.
When you gonna wake up and fight...

I'm so sick of this tombstone mentality,
If there's an afterlife,
Then it'll set you free.
But I'm not gonna part the seas
You're a self-fulfilling prophecy.
You think that crying to me,
Looking so sorry that I'm gonna believe,
You've been infected by a social disease.
Well, then take your medicine.

[Chorus]

I created the Sound of Madness.
Wrote the book on pain.
Somehow I'm still here,
To explain,
That the darkest hour never comes in the night.
You can sleep with a gun.
When you gonna wake up...
When you gonna wake up and fight...

[Chorus]

When you gonna wake up and fight... for yourself? [x3]

NOTES ON THIS VID

I must begin with a special thanks to Jan, my S.O., who watched about 19 versions of this vid and after the first three never saw any difference in them. There were differences, major ones, but to the non-vidder it was all just sound and fury signifying nothing (aka days of me hunched in front of the computer wearing headphones).

Now, on to the process, I decided to do a Sherlock vid after the second episode of the show. My first problem? I wasn't going to do a shippy vid or try to tell a story. I wanted to do a character piece. I only have three other character driven vids to my credit, two about Kara Thrace and one about Lee Adama. Show of hands from anyone who remembers Effortlessly. Nobody? That's what I thought.

Anyway, I wanted to explore the alienation of Holmes, view him as a sociopath. But not in a melancholy way. I wanted a sense that he was defiantly, willfully, superior. I agree with The Moff when he says that Holmes rejects his own humanity. And yet, I needed to let the Watson friendship come through, because that is also part of who Sherlock is.

With all of that in mind, I went looking for a song. LOL! And I learned that I don't have much in the way of “sociopath's in polite society” music on my hard drive. I toyed with the idea of yet another Sister Hazel song. World Inside My Head or Fortress maybe. But in the end, YouTube led me to Shinedown and eventually to this almost perfect song. It's definitely not something I would listen to by choice, (I'm more of an Owl City girl) but I think it works for Sherlock.

The song, itself, created another problem. I'm a lyrical vidder. I don't know nothing about no rhythm, but the driving beat in this song called for much faster cuts than I had ever attempted. Faster, in fact, than I was comfortable doing with my old WMM from 2007. I considered switching to the Sony Vegas or the Adobe Premiere. But I am a novice with both programs and very slow to digest instructions these days due to drugs, pain and sleep apnea. Struggling with an unfamiliar program was not going to work for me. So, I chose to soldier on with WMM. And it only crashed about 6 times total. The amazing Dualbunny gave me some great advice and, in the end, I was happy with the combination of fast and slow clips. The pace of the show is much like the song and I believe this vid captures what I was hoping to achieve.

Enjoy!

While, like you, the music wasn't my normal cuppa, it suited perfectly. Well done, you! I am going to try to not get ranty about the fact that there is no new Sherlock tonight because there needs to be one. He's an utterly intriguing character, perfectly cast.

Methinks I need some Sherlock icons...

We all need more Sherlock icons. I have six of them, I think. But there should be more. And I am also trying very hard not to rant about no new Sherlock tonight. Though, I do agree with the Moff that 90 minute episodes are lovely...but 3 weeks out of the year seems a bit stingy with your Cumberbatch.

The 90-minutes format was a treat. I didn't expect it for the second two episodes, but I absolutely loved it because it gave them time to focus on minutae without sacrificing on pacing, character, or plot.

I must stop procrastinating over the Cumberbatch and get back to work. I have both a migraine and a deadline, so naturally, I'm fangirling instead, lol.

Interesting. I had no idea it plays in current times. I can see why Moffat said that Matt would have been a good fit for Sherlock. The guy reminds me of a mixture of Rufus Sewell and Gary Lightbody (singer of Snow Patrol) though and that's a bit creepy. I'm intrigued but not yet converted.

I am confident that the first episode will convert you. If it doesn't, than the third one will. Cumberbatch is definitely creepy and so is the way they film him--slow, slooooooow, fast! As for Matt being a good fit. Words cannot describe how much I wish Cumberbatch was Eleven. But no...I wouldn't think Matt could hold even a feeble, flickering candle to his Sherlock. Though, I do agree that Moff cast to a type for both roles. Apparently, he is at one with Arthur Conan Doyle, and subscribes to the archaic idea that large, domed foreheads indicate intelligence.

I'm so glad you liked it well enough to DL! I, also, thought this song really suited Sherlock the man...and the show!

I love the vid. The music fits really well, and I'm not just talking about the lyrics. It's so fast-paced, and that's what I think makes it perfect for Sherlock because everyone around Sherlock is always playing catch up while he's already seven steps ahead of them.

Thanks for the love!

I totally agree about the music. Both the pacing of it and the lyrics are totally Sherlock. As soon as I heard the song, I started putting the vid together in my head. I'm happy that my skills eventually lived up to that vision. It was a bit touch and go there for a time.

Thanks again for the feedback comment.
