Video: Benedict Cumberbatch...and a bit of Sherlock, too!
I'm struggling to make a Sherlock vid just now. And let me tell you it is a struggle. The style of the show...and my song choice...are making it very hard on me. I've decided I want to do a vid that captures the essence of Sherlock (the show and the man), rather than tell a story. But I'm afraid I get distracted by my need to tell a story.
So, I went out on the interwebs to look for other Sherlock vids and I found this one by
stolensmile14. It's a photo study vid of Benedict C. and the cuts on the beat put me to shame. Except...maybe that's WHY it is a slideshow. It is very hard to capture Sherlock, the show, with super fast cuts, in my opinion. Or at least it is at my level of vidding development.
This is for those of you who must wait until October for the PBS airing...take a look under this cut...you won't be spoiled...or disappointed. I wouldn't exactly call Benedict beautiful, but his Sherlock is.

who can see the sexy in Benedict that I completely miss in Matt Smith. BTW, you can see another side to Sherlock and give Stolensmile14 some love at this link...http://stolensmile14.livejournal.com/18470.html

Truly, this man should have been Eleven.

As for wallowing in Sherlock...oh, yes! I just warmed to John Watson in this last episode and now he's gone and I won't see him for ever so long.
Mentally suggesting that Moff give up on Doctor Who and go work on this...but I figure that won't happen until Doctor Who finishes shooting this next Season at the very least. And, anyway, my mental suggestions are not taken by the BBC, are they? :sob:

Moff really is much better at this. Of course, he also has a co-creator who likely lets Moff focus on the things he does brilliantly while still reigning him in from doing stupid shit that pisses me off. 4.5 hours and I already have a better feel for the primary, secondary, and even the tertiary characters than I did after 13ish hours of series 5 Who. I question their choice of Moriarty and the odd take on the queer subtext. But even then, Moriarty was easier to grasp as a character than Amy Pond, whom I still don't have a handle on. I thought I had her, and then she wanted to snog the Doctor silly in Rory's presence after having re-lived her life with her family intact and the abandonment issues gone.
So--moar Sherlock, pls. The sooner the better.

But, yes, I totally agree that we have much better drawn minor characters and total commitment to the major ones in Sherlock. It could be that Moff simply has a cocreator on Sherlock. I've always thought that RTD could have used one of those to rein in his excesses and most importantly to tell him that he didn't need to separate the Doctor and Rose again. But...alas...
When it comes to the odd take on the queer subtext...I'm not completely convinced that Holmes is as asexual as he is in canon in this one. I think that we are probably supposed to think that he has a crush of some sort on Watson. Certainly, he appears to care a great deal for him. Watson is less obviously domestic and yet, by his very nature, comes over as the one with hero worship. That's simply intrinsic to the character and is offset by his obvious interest in women. To be fair, Holmes simply can't be interested in women. There is every chance that Holmes and Watson could share something deeper and warmer than brotherly regard in the canon. Though I doubt that was Doyle's intention. I am not sure about Moff's intentions.
I do agree with you though...that Moriarty was poorly cast in some ways. Basically, as I said somewhere, he comes across as a poor man's David Tennant. His "playing gay" comment nearly made me spit my drink out, as it obviously wasn't a stretch for Mr. Over the Top. Still, I am willing to believe that he's one of those brittle madmen...and every interaction he has is styled to put his audience on the defensive. So, he is mocking Holmes by pretending to be flamboyant...but is only truly interested in himself. This is the thin line that separated him from Holmes. Holmes IS capable of caring for another person, capable of genuine interest, however fleeting, even if he hates that part of himself on some level.
