David Tennant Movie News
Jul. 14th, 2010 03:34 pmSo, you have probably already heard that David Tennant is on the short list to replace Ed Norton in The Avengers movie. David would be playing Bruce "You Wouldn't Like Me When I'm Angry" Banner aka The Incredible Hulk. But, of course, the Hulk is played by CGI these days...and Lou Ferrigno in the past. So, all David has to do is be Bruce, I think. He can certainly brood with the best of them...or simmer.
This is the first costume/comic piece that I think really might suit David. I was a major fan of Bill Bixby. Yes, he is way before my time...but I still really enjoyed him. I was a precocious child, okay? The thing about the Hulk is I rather felt that Norton was miscast. Though I didn't bother to see his version, so he could have proved me wrong, I guess. David however would be great as a guy that has problems with his anger management issues and is holding the beast in check. The only question for me is can he do an American accent...or failing that can Bruce be re-imagined as having an accent?
Probably, given how prickly comic book geeks are, the latter is out of the question. I do have some faith in David that he is practicing his American accent these days. It would be foolish not to work on that.
Also, in a side note...who wants to see Piper Perabo from Covert Affairs replaced by Billie Piper? Just me? Okay!

Date: 2010-07-14 07:39 pm (UTC)I mean, comparing Ed's version to Eric Bana's version... My boyfriend already got miffed by their replacing War Machine in Iron Man 2. He wanted MORE MONEY? You couldn't pay my boyfriend ANY money to be in a super hero movie. And then Don Cheadle was all "I'll do it! Yay I'm in a super hero movie!"
I don't know where I'm going with this. I have nothing to do and no other posts to comment on. xD There you go.

Date: 2010-07-15 03:04 am (UTC)As much as I love David, I would prefer Ed Norton stay in the role... he really won me over, you know? It's a shame.

Date: 2010-07-15 03:38 am (UTC)And I completely agree about War Machine. I really didn't like the change. But I don't really have a problem with an actor stepping into a role...once the original actor quits or is fired. Because someone has to play it if the bosses ditch the first actor. I always hold the production office responsible for those things. It isn't like David was asking that they dump Ed. Ed is just gone and the role is open. It could be a mistake and if Ed was popular...it could backlash on David...but I really can't see it going to Nathan Fillion, myself. Which is not to say I don't like Nathan...I just don't think he's a good match for Banner.

who thinks Thor and Wonder Woman and Captain America all look tacky.

Date: 2010-07-15 03:44 am (UTC)And yeah... I do like Nathan Fillion, but he's no Bruce Banner. Too tall and strong and confident, at least in everything I've seen him in.

Date: 2010-07-15 03:57 pm (UTC)I actually bet a friend that after G I JOE came out there'd be fanfiction in which Destro (the Eccleston character) was an evil form of the Doctor in Pete's World, or really the Master, or something like that.
I actually lost the bet: as far as I know, none ever appeared! David is more popular than Eccleston was, so maybe people'd find it worthwhile to write crossover fanfiction, but I'm less confident about it than I would have been if this had been announced a year ago.

Date: 2010-07-14 08:25 pm (UTC)David can do the scrawny geeky bit pretty well but he'd have to master an American accent.

Date: 2010-07-15 02:38 am (UTC)My issues come from two things: 1. Tennant would need good writing for the character to be a good fit. I say this because he could be the embodiment of everything Bruce Banner is supposed to be and then some, but if the writing screws over the Bruce Banner character, it won't work. And 2. The Hulk (beyond Bruce Banner, which is at this point practically a separate entity) has become some sort of black hole in cinema. The concept of the Hulk is a great one from an entertainment point of view, but it just hasn't translated well into film in recent years, if ever. And I'm not sure I want Tennant mixed up in that. (Plus there's a part of me that REALLY wants him to play the Riddler in the next Batman movie, should they use that character. And I'm a little afraid him being the Hulk might get in the way of that either because of time commitments or the Hulk black hole sucking up that opportunity. On the other hand, more power to him if he can use Hulk to get him the other part or he gets both a la Ryan Reynolds being both Deadpool and Green Lantern. And this could all be moot because they may not use Riddler in the next Batman.)
And I would LOVE it if they replace Piper Perabo with Billie Piper. Billie would be infinitely better. The show has some promise, but I just don't like Piper as an actress. And I'm not sure she really acts because I feel like she just says the lines as she herself would say them. There are few to no differences.

Date: 2010-07-15 03:52 am (UTC)As for Piper switch, it came to me because someone suggested watching Perabo was like watching Billie. But there is a lot more to Billie than just her full lips, blond hair, jaw line and curves. There is all of that acting talent, too.

Date: 2010-07-15 03:01 am (UTC)WAT. Gizmodo, you're supposed to tell me these things! ::shakes fist:: I bet it was on io9...
He really would be a good Bruce Banner. Though Ed Norton was, for the record, pretty damn good at it, too. The version of the Hulk he was in was a great movie, far better than Ang Lee's attempt at the picture. I honestly recommend it.
As to David's American accent, I recall him using it in one audiobook or another. Perhaps Feast of the Drowned? But I think I was too thrown off by hearing him speak with our accent to analyze it well. XD For some reason, while hearing people jump from one accent to another usually doesn't bother me (like when David does English then Scottish), people jumping to or from American accents breaks my brain. Like hearing John Barrowman use his childhood accent or DT speak American English.

Date: 2010-07-15 03:55 am (UTC)I think he would give a very sincere performance as Banner. But as I say somewhere above, he could be wasted in a such a big cast. Also, they would not be as likely to do another full Hulk movie with him at the gamma radiation switch. So it would be a little bit of a waste for him, perhaps. It would depend on the script.

Date: 2010-07-15 01:16 pm (UTC)I agree with you as Edward Norton being miscast. Although I thought the movie was MUCH better than the Eric Bana version I really didn't see his emotions as the character...(I thought you saw more emotions as the HULK, and that's CGI). Also seemed like was stressed about 90% of the time running for dear life..he had moments to be sure, but not enough. David, I think, has the that "scientist geek look" that can change into your worst nightmare..no makeup needed! Take a look at Secret Smile and all of Doctor Who.
Although his American accent I am unsure of, the only time I heard an American accent from him was his audio book "The Beast of Clawstone Castle", it sounded very off and I couldn't help but laugh. BUT! If Hugh Laurie can do it so perfectly I have faith in David Tennant as well. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Date: 2010-07-15 03:51 pm (UTC)The person actually rumored to be in final talks for the role is Mark Ruffalo.
Personally I would have preferred Tennant, Brody and Phoenix over Ruffalo.

Date: 2010-07-21 12:16 am (UTC)The reason that I didn't write this "me, too!" comment sooner is that until about an hour ago I had nothing more than "Yo, tambien!" to add. Now I do: turns out he's in a segment of the Fourth Episode of the First Season of Love, American Style. That'd be on disk #1.
So, thinking of you, and your posts, all the time!
I was thinking of you, too, when I nearly brought S1 of Dollhouse home from the library at the same time, but then I changed my mind (on the advice of someone there who likes other Whedon-works).

who hasn't seen an episode of Love American Style since I was a very small Rabid. But I think Bill Bixby is my surrogate father-figure.

Date: 2010-07-22 08:02 pm (UTC)You did, too?!? "Serendipity", indeed! :-D
However, while Bill Bixby was a nice man, he was never a "Dad" figure to me. If I had to pick someone in all of media, I'd say Jim Henson had more of a personal impact -- through all of his work in all the developing mediums.
And yeah, IIRC, I used to watch L,AS in daytime reruns. This week, however, I am most tickled seeing the pre-show credits: it's a mix of old established with new flavor-of the-moment actors. Some actors stood the test of time, some did not. A surprising number were guests on Star Trek (and therefore, I assume, also shows such as Gunsmoke, Batman, Wild, Wild West, et al.)
It's like time traveling!
