In Shamanism the whale represents a direct link to the divine. Life began in the oceans and the great spirit sends the whale as a symbol of creation as a whole--the seas, the land, mankind, the animals and God--all of us connected, all of us capable of renewal. The whale connects us, as fellow air breathers, to a world beyond our capacity or understanding. So...it is very interesting that a marathon surfer who prayed for a sign from God to help her help a cancer-battling friend find the strength to keep fighting...got a whale of an answer to her prayers.

I hope my friends who suffer and struggle, feel better after reading this. But don't misunderstand my meaning, shamanism isn't about magic. It's about connection. This particular breed of whale is quite elusive, rare in those waters and not known to behave this way. Why did it pursue this encounter? Did God send the whale as an answer to a prayer? Did the whale sense some need on its own? Or did the whale simply notice a lone surfer in a great sea and decide to find out what the hell was going on up there? Since there are pictures, there must have been a boat along, too--for safety and to document the event. So...it couldn't just be a lonely surfer, then, drawing the curious whale. Idle curiousity doesn't quite explain it, but connection does. That whale wanted to connect with the surfer and whatever she was doing. Connection...isn't that what all of us want?

Because...we are a consciousness...aware...alive...we imagine living in a world beyond our capacity. And we will exist as long as the whale remembers us.

And, also, "Whale! Pretty!" as stone-age Buffy would say.

To be completely right brained, perhaps the whale WAS lonely and thought that surf board was just about the right size to be some weird sort of Minke trailing the escort boat. In this scenario, you can imagine the whale trying to make an entirely different sort of connection and ending up completely frustrated after 2 hours.

But since I am always having weird psychic moments, I do believe we are somehow all aware of one another on that "pray for help" level.

That's really an amazing story. I, too, have felt those moments of connection, serendipity, whatever you want to call it. Where things inexplicably happen or click into place and you can't believe that it's just a coincidence.

You are welcome, Bunny! I know how much you like whales. And snow sharks.
