Greetings From The Plague House
Feb. 15th, 2010 08:12 pmSo, we have been having a very fun week here at Chez Rabid. I came home from my own pain management appointment last Tuesday to find my sweetheart curled up on the sofa moaning and feverish. His illness escalated through the night and I was very concerned about his fever and chills and vomiting. We made a doctor's appointment for Friday and hoped for the best. By Friday morning things were looking better but he still was exhausted. Still, we had every hope that he would be fine by today. However, by Saturday night his fever was back up and he was coughing and unable to stay out of the bathroom. So, back to the doctor today, instead of to work for him. As of this evening, he is keeping down toast and a cup of Powerade, but we are not optimistic yet. The doctor has given him some pills for the nausea and ordered some more blood work as this is not how flu is supposed to behave. My sweetie is very underweight and has little reserve energy...so...it is possible that the flu is simply kicking his ass. But now we are all wondering.
Meanwhile, I have the endurance of a new born kitten fighting its way out of a wet paper sack. I tend to rely on my sweetie for a lot of daily care and now he can't even help himself. Talk about trying. Yesterday, I had a trio of unknown neighborhood boys help me get the groceries in the door. They were casing the joint, but I hope I discouraged them with my talk of flu in the house and such.
Good thoughts needed again. Sheesh!

Date: 2010-02-16 01:52 am (UTC)It sounds very much like the flu as far as whats happening with your hubby. I caught it in my early 20s and didn't have the insurence to show for it. I had the exact same symptoms you say that your other half has....to a "T". I remember sitting in my underwear on the bathroom floor crying because I was in so much agony. I lost 15 pounds and my college said I couldn't return without a Doctor's consent. (liability was their defense and a strong one at that) After all that I got a professor who was a retired pediatrican to confirm that I was fine and ready to return. I was told that I looked like a brunett Kate Moss but I went back to class...only to slip on a pepsi can and go flying down the stairs.(hearing laughter all the way down)SO, I ended up sitting out the semester and sitting in my apartment with my roommates' pothead boyfriend for a month, watching re-runs of "Due South".
I guess what I'm saying is, you'll get through this, but stay away from stairs and pepsi cans, but keep re-runs of "Due South" handy. (Hey, it gets your mind off the pain and into the gutter where it belongs)

Date: 2010-02-16 04:26 am (UTC)Best case scenario is that it is a virus that will run its course. If so, in that case, for both of you, I recommend elderberry syrup (expensive, but...! Gaia is a good brand: fewest extraneous ingredients), garlic soup (smash some cloves and throw into pot of water), coconut water (to replenish electrolytes. Again, pick brands with fewest or no extraneous ingredients), zinc (liquid or lozenges), and vitamin C from fresh citrus (juice the fruit yourself: just stick a fork in it and wiggle).
Gargle with hydrogen peroxide (swish, really, just be sure to get some on the back of your palate where the nasal passage drains into the throat.
Hot water bottle can ease chills, and alcohol rubs can bring down fever.
And get plenty of rest, of course.
Be strong. My good thoughts are with you!
