As some of you may have noticed...there's no more new Buffy.

Sometimes when I wake up in the morning I think it was all a bad dream. For a brief second or two I feel light-hearted and carefree. And then I remember...it wasn't a dream...the loss is all too real! My show is gone and my heroic supercouple has been reduced to a cookie-dough memory and a Dan Tanna Wannabe. James is now wasted on one liners and stale shtick like banging an airheaded secretary to ease the strain in his trousers. Is it any wonder I've turned to drink?

Okay...not drink...just daytime TV but the principle is the same(Wasn't it Jung who called soaps the opiate of the classless? No?)

The thing is I remember a time when I, like Spike and Joyce, took solace in daytime drama. And so, prompted by a recent article in TVGuide claiming the Days of Our Lives Slasher story was the best one of 2003, I tuned in for a bit of serialization. Desperate for a good story...I grasped at the straw of hope (she really has lost too much weight).

The last time I watched Days (10 years ago maybe)John was leaving town...but Marlena caught him in the nick of time and they made love on a private plane. This despite her still being married to Roman. I thought at the time it was kind of HOT. Sammy meanwhile was hateful and scheming. Lucas had a thing for her. Bo and Hope were together and attractive but not really interesting. Mrs. Horton was as old as dirt. That's about all I recall...except that Belle was a baby and boring.

My how times have changed...for one thing Roman is Chris...and dead too. Sammy is hateful and scheming. Lucas has a thing for her. Belle is 16 or so and still boring as hell. Mrs. Horton, Lord love her, needs to be resting quietly somewhere without so much excitement. Hope is anorexic. Bo is definitely NOT. Marlene and John are married. John has become expert at wiggling his eyebrows in lieu of actually acting. In fact, everyone on this show has apparently given up on acting.

Everyone! There isn't a smidgen of chemistry or an ounce of sincerity to be found. No damned wonder the writers have resorted to killing people off. They are probably hoping for a believable reaction.

Anyway, I was watching Tony DiMera, who I once adored, (Anyone remember when he was chained up in the secret room? Show of hands!) chew the scenery when it struck me that my oft lauded ability to pinpoint true acting talent may well be nothing more than a figment of my imagination.

Sure, I picked Tom Hanks out of Bosom Buddies and Kevin Spacey out of Wiseguy. I sat up and took notice when the camera panned up James Marsters' body in School Hard. I watched the first episode of BtVS because two years before I had seen SMG's emmy clip (I never watched her soap) and remembered her talent. But all of that could just be coincidence.

I was plagued with doubt. I had to know. And so...risking dust mite attack, I spent two nights rummaging through boxes of ancient video tape searching for my best of Santa Barbara collection. Locating the Serenas arc, I curled up to watch Roscoe Born break-up Cruz and Eden. Don't give me that look you C/E lovers! Eden loved Robert. In the final analysis, his death is what sent her into Multiple Personality Disorder and caused her to ultimately leave town...so there. :-b

Anyway, I am happy to report my reputation (such as it is) is unscathed. Santa Barbara is first class TV! They could bring it back today. And they SHOULD! It was as stellar as I remembered it being...even all these years later. Roscoe Born was amazing. A Martinez pure understated glory. Marcy Walker fully able to weep and rant and still look like every word she uttered came from her own brain. And what glorious words they were...what amazing interlocking storylines those writers created!

So...what is my point? I don't really have one. I'm just being maudlin. Time flies and unless you're chewing scenery on DOOL you can't make it stand still. Good things fade away...make sure you have plenty of video tape or writable DVD.

I went looking for Roscoe Born Online tonight. He's grey haired now and slightly pudgy. He's also currently unemployed (having left a solid gig at OLTL last summer). Part of me wants to see him act again (yes, give Roscoe a job). Part of me wants to remember him as he was...hot, tight...lickable. Part of me cringes away from the specter of a bitter future when buoyed up by my review of old BtVS eppys I go searching for James Marsters Online and find he is pudgy and grey.

feeling old...and slightly pudgy...but still vindicated.

You have Santa Barabra on tape? I'm so jealous. That was the best soap ever.

The only reason why I'm sticking with DOOL is for the Lucas/Sami storyline. IMHO, the ruination of DOOL began with the horrid Nurse Ali storyline in an attempt to create a quadrangle between Mike/Carrie/Ali/Austin. *le sigh*

I, too, am mildly interested in Sami/Lucas...

...they are they only couple with an ounce of chemistry, in my less than humble opinion. Enjoyed the recent tickling episode. Would very much like to see Sami grow up a bit. I find the whole self-centered/bombastic shtick tiresome. It is the same one she had going on at 15. And as we learned from BtVS...what is okay at 15 is not so okay in your 20's. Sooner or later you have to mature or you become a cartoon.

I am waiting for the day that Santa Barbara shows up on Soap net and then my life will be complete. I only have highlights of the show on about 50 tapes from the funeral of Cruz and Eden's baby (who didn't die) on through the end. I missed all of the Mason/Julia getting pregnant bits, the Sonny!!! storyline. Ahhhhh, happy days.

I loved that show. The acting was so far above par and the storylines were wonderful.

I too have only highlights...

...I have the original Serenas arc with Robert/Eden/Cruz. And the part a year or so later with Eden leaving town. I have the Michael/Julia love scenes...and the rapist being caught...I started taping right after Eden was attacked...because it suddenly dawned on me that this was landmark tv and I was treating it like an ordinary soap. I was a fan of Michael/Julia because while I adored Mason...he was a horrible man and I thought Julia deserved better. But then...Lane Davies...was so wonderful. My sweetie never watched the show...or soaps at all come to that...but he remembers seeing Mason in a clip or something and being captivated by him.

I also have Gina and Keith's wedding...the one where she delivers the baby on the way to the church and he is kidnapped by his driver...just side-splitting.

I sent an e-mail to Soapnet asking them if they are going to air Santa Barbara. No reply as yet.

I started taping about a year after that. Would tape all the eps during the week then spend two hours every weekend taping off the highlights with two vcrs hooked together *g*.

I loved Mason, I just villains. Lane Davies and Nancy Grahn had such chemistry.

Eden's rape was so incredibly powerful, so well done.

And Keith and Gina...heeeeee!

Sending lots of vibes to soap net. I'm happy with the Another World eps but I'm waiting for Frankie to show up before I start watching fully.

I used to watch Days. I remember when Marlena was married to Don and Roman wasn't even around, when Stefano came to town the FIRST time, when Bo and Hope first showed up, she as a snotty teenager. I stopped watching about the time I got into Buffy fandom. Something had to go. My mom still watches. I find that I can go a year without watching and then sit down with her and get right back into it. The show moves SO slow!
