There is talk that David Tennant might be cast as Bilbo in the Hobbit. Here is a link to some of the talk...

http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/07/16/hobbit-casting-rumor-tennant-mcavoy-and-radcliffe-in-running-for-bilb

And my mind sort of bends around the idea. On the one hand, good for David as it is a lead role in what promises to be a huge film. On the other hand...David is not very hobbit-like in my opinion. I know they will shrink him and cover his feet in fur and CGI him to within an inch of his life...but still...I have a hard time seeing him as Bilbo Baggins. He undoubtedly has the talent to hold an audience...and to even transform into something hobbit-y, I suppose. I just am not sure you step into leading man roles via hobbit feet. I'd rather see him do elfish, I think.

James McAvoy would be my choice out of the three listed. But, on the other hand, David would definitely get me to the theater...and I wasn't planning on going. So there is that.

he could be a young Gandalf...?
or a very important elf from Rivendell... you know who...
the name escapes me at the moment...

I am afraid I never made it past page 80 in the Hobbit. I thought it crashingly boring. I have tried to read it on three separate occasions and never managed to get going. But then, I hate those journy tales where you go out into the world and meet lots of strange new people. They were all the rage in the scifi stories I was raised with and nothing turns me off more than to know that some intrepid soul is going on a Hero's Journey with and elf, a wizard and a swarthy man-at-arms by his side.

I so don't see that. Casting DT as a hobbit, not that I don't agree with the fact that he could pull it off if they did.

I think Daniel looks the most like he'd be related to Elijah, but I'm sure that doesn't actually matter. Plus he's a little young.

McAvoy would, I think, work really well.

There is an actor that people put forward...Martin Freeman...who certainly looks like a young Ian Holm. Some people thought David looked the part, too, but I don't see it. Still, with makeup and such he could probably pull it off...I just don't see that it will do his career much good. Other than make him lots of money...which is a plus, of course.

I mean...Elijah Wood probably never has to work again. Which does free a man up who enjoys doing theater.

Yeah, I wouldn't have initially seen him in that role, but I totally think he could pull it off better than any of those suggested actors. He also does the quick happy care-free vs dark angst changes in emotion, which is what I would see required for a young Bilbo, and he'd totally nail it.

I do think they couldn't do better for range of emotion against CGI critters than they would get with David...he would totally nail the challenge of Bilbo's growth.

Hobbits are most definitely fat...and short...and they have big, hairy feet. Well, David has manly hairy hands...so maybe he's got the feet as well. After all, Billie does call him, "Ten-Inch."

suddenly wondering about the pipe swinging Hobbits. :shudder:

Uhhh... I don't want any of those. Bilbo's 55-ish when he sets out on his adventure (haha, Flapjack) and although Hobbits look younger than they are, there's NO WAY ANY of those can get the look right, even with make-up and CGI. I wish they'd stick with Sir Holm; he looked so perfect in FotR.

BTW, thank you for putting all your Torchwood stuff under cuts; allows me to keep myself from spoilers much easier. =D

I'm with you on the look. But they are obviously playing to a type...you can see that all three men have a similar facial structure which is also very like Elijah's. So, I feel they are going to distort the person quite a bit with CGI. Still, hard also to imagine any of them turning out to be Ian Holm so...I don't know. I just don't know. Like I said, I really want the best for David and this would definitely give him some exposure. But I would much rather he play Gandalf, even though that is a much smaller role.

Rae
who is happy to oblige re: Torchwood...and hopes you respond as you go since all five nights are covered in separate posts and I was definitely NOT spoiled.

What do you think of Martin Freeman? I think he looks VERY like the Bilbo I was expecting.

I think he looks like a long-lost Beatle. XD haha. I can see him as Bilbo, though. I'd much rather a lesser-known actor go for Bilbo. Of course, they probably want a highly-billed actor to get the masses to see it. I was never happy with how Liv Tyler was listed so high in the adverts and posters for LotR; above SAMWISE and ARAGORN! Gah.

I have the same reaction and am completely embryo-free. You should have seen my reaction when the GI Joe trailer ran for the first time in the theater. It went something like this...

"Oh, what is this load of crap? Ha! Special suits to make them faster than speeding bullets? BWAHHHAHA! Look some green slime is melting the Eiffel Tower? :snort: :chortle: Oh, I'm so scared! And impressed by the flag waving and your very burly, Mr. No-Credits To Your Name but a big bicep Actor Fella and you little miss spit-fi...HELLO? Was that Chris? OMG! THAT'S CHRIS! :sigh: :swoon: Oh, I've got to start recording SciFi late night for this trailer."

Pathetic really. And yes, if David Tennant gets a substantial part in the Hobbit, I would go see it even though the thought of sitting through another Lord of the Rings movie makes me grimace because I might have a seisure or something during the third hour of it...but okay...never mind that. :downs medication:

Of course. I mean, he's WAY too SKINNY to play a hobbit. And there's no way I want to see him go the way of Sean Astin and eat hundreds of shepherd's pies to gain all of the weight. Nevermind that he looks NOTHING like Ian Holm.

Nope, sorry. I call "Shenanigans!"

Serious no to Daniel Radcliffe, even if he's sort of hobbit sized already, he is not a strong enough actor to pull off Bilbo. Now he may have been amazing in Equus but from the films I've seen of him, HP (obviously) and My Boy Jack, just no. I love David and would see it if he was Bilbo but I think I'm not planning on seeing it at the moment so I guess I'll just have to reserve judgment for the trailer.

I think it's just a rumor or a joke that got out of hand.
