You all will remember that I was doubtful about who would fill those Size Elevens and was pretty sure it would be someone we haven't heard about at all. And indeed it was...that guy. So, now...continuing my fearless, mostly wrong or meaningless, predictions...I say the new companion will be...

...Michelle Ryan. I think this time the press has it right. More than that, I am beginning to think she will start out as a sort of house jailer for our Time Lord. That's right...I still believe in the pony. And I'm coming out now to say that someone steps in and forces our Doctor to regenerate and get his act together.

This gives his youthful vigor some textural meaning. He's a rebel fighting the "MAN" and eventually...the "MAN" will prove to be up to something and Ryan will be on the Doctor's side. But until then we will remove the possiblity of sex in the TARDIS while allowing sexual tensions all over the place. Something that will please Moffat. Also, Moffat will have free rein to ditch the companion any old time as she will be a true drag on the Doctor. This, for those who don't know, will also give Moffat a staging ground for his anti-marriage leanings.

Now, my only hope is that before the Doctor is turned into Eleven...he gets to live out a life with Rose Tyler as Ten. It could be an exile/punishment that is more Brer Rabbit into the briar bush. Or...it could be that the MAN grants him one boon before putting him to work.

And yes, I do realize that I am probably just talking out my ass here about the idea of a higher power stepping in...because it is entirely possible that nobody associated with Doctor Who views the Doctor's behavior as out of control. They probably see no need for him to change his ways at all...so they won't be doing any of this.

But...let's allow for RTD knowing he messed up...and assume he's trying to fix that. He has had the Doctor say a few pithy things about not being worthy of happiness or love, but RTD most likely feels the Doctor is doing the best he can...trying to do right by Donna and Rose and 10.2 while actually ruining their lives. So, the Doctor, by RTD's reckoning...wouldn't be able to go back and fix anything. It is possible he needs some kind of intervention.

And that does open up a new direction for the new Doctor...one with some roots in the old Who. Because making the Doctor the last line of authority in the universe is a bad idea...it goes nowhere. Making him a rebel for good...however...a challenged authority...makes some sense. I must say though, that so far, the powers behind DW seem to love their Lonely God. And seem to have no idea how very irksome that idea will get once we no longer feel any sympathy for the young whippersnapper.

I didn't realize who she was until I read an online article about her and saw that she was in that (awful) remake of The Bionic Woman. She could certainly do fine, and she's had experience with stunts and things, so... I dunno, I just haven't seen enough of her work to have a real opinion.

I quite liked Michelle Ryan as Nimueh on Merlin, so why not?

Making the Doc a rebel instead of a 'God' is fine by me. Does he have to look like hes 15 years old though?

Well, if they cast Michelle Ryan and he looks like a kid...then it can seem like he's not the one in charge even when he is. Now, Moffat tells us he cast this kid on a fluke...but I can't help thinking that 10.2 is also very young...and River, Moffat's character said that about the Doctor as well...that he was "young." Also Moffat refers to Ten kissing everything in sight and falling hopelessly in love as "The Doctor enters adolesence."

So, then...being a young man is the next logical step. Only, I do want them to let the Rose/Ten story end better than it has. As it stands there is a real gapping hole at the center of our hero...not just in his lamenting his lonely state...but in his professed cowardice. I mean, what he has told us is he loves Rsoe but he can't bear to watch her grow old and die...so he'll let this other version of him do it...and he's told Rose that it is somehow HER duty to give the rebellious, dangerous other him a stern talking to and "make him better." I mean...HELLO! Talk about a self-centered person, the Doctor as he now stands is pretty far gone in his own ego even if we do allow that he's "doing what he thinks is best for everyone."

I like this theory. It sounds like a good way to wrap things up with Ten both to Rusty's and our mutual satisfaction re:Rose and it gives Moffat an even more interesting angle to start with than what I had been suspecting. I do feel like RTD has set the stage enough to let even clueless viewers in on the fact that Ten is out of control with the whole Lonely God schtick. One guess on the higher authority: he *did* just piss off the Shadow Proclamation ;)

Yeah...I thought of the Shadow Proclamation. They seemed a bit on the clueless and impotent side when we last saw them. But I was struck by the albino woman saying the Doctor was anachronistic. That case hasn't been put forward by RTD, but it is very true. If the Doctor truly cannot change or grow in anyway...and all of his kind are lost...then he's rather pointless and should probably just fade away, too. But if he has purpose, beyond his drifting, if he has the ability to grow and change, then there is reason to go on watching the show...and hoping for him, caring about him. I know I drone on about the Rose decision and people against change and Rose might think I'm just wanting my own way.

But they would be wrong about that. The Doctor's reasoning about Rose is the problem I have with the story. If she'd never returned...well...I would have allowed that one day he could move on from her to something else. Or...if she had returned and they had both changed so much that they no longer formed one seamless unit. If she'd turned to the human Doctor and he'd been the one supporting her points and making suggestions and taking the lead...then it would have been different for me. But the story we were told...is a love story to the end. And it ends the way it does because the Doctor is a child or a coward or an egomaniac...and none of those outcomes are acceptable to me.

Well, yeah. Word to all that, particularly where it leaves the Doctor. But I'm feeling pessimistic about an ultimate fix - if you listen to the statements the Big Three make on the DVD extra, they do seem very much to regard the D/R romance as resolved, talking about a conclusion that honours Rose's emotional journey.

Still, we shall see. I'm not expecting much of the next Special other than chasing monsters in Dubai. Sounds like it'll be a good ol' romp, but with any luck things will get more serious after that.

When you say "the MAN", who do you mean? The best way to sort out the Doctor and bring him back into line would probably be to bring his people back, wouldn't it...and RTD is predicting "seismic" developments for the next block of filming.

The first thought I had about Eleven was "Eek! He's my age - 26!" Makes me feel better about dressing up.

The second thought I had was to tell everyone that if I stop watching Who, it's no because Tennant has left. It's because Moffat has taken over. All female characters are doomed.

The third thought I had was after reading Doctor Who magazine, where RTD says the next special will be looking forward in new directions rather than drawing on the past. It's suitably non-committal. :)

I hope that the Doctor changes, becomes better himself with Rose at his side. When I watched the Confidential for "The Next Doctor" I heard RTD say something along the lines of the Doctor really taking a look at himself in the following specials. Now I could just be hearing what I want but I hope that he is referring to the idea that you stated where he seriously looks at what he's become. A man who is lonely and damaged but refuses the help he so desperately needs because he is afraid to change. *praying for the pony*
