Here is the current odds list from Outpost Gallifrey

WILLIAM HILL ODDS ON NEXT DOCTOR (30th Oct 2008)
5/2 David Morrissey
3/1 Patterson Joseph
6/1 James McAvoy
7/1 James Nesbitt, Robert Carlyle
8/1 John Simm, Rhys Ifans
12/1 Anthony Head
14/1 Alan Davies, Jason Statham
16/1 Nigel Harman, Bill Nighy
25/1 Daniel Radcliffe, Burn Gorman
33/1 Stephen Fry, John Barrowman
20/1 Next Doctor To Be Female
50/1 Christopher Eccleston

Excuse me, Eccleston? Who is placing money on that? Of course, I wonder how many people are going to try to collect on David Morrisey, because they think they have inside information? Hmmm! Anyway, my money is on someone not on the official lists at all. I would like it to be Shaun Parkes, but it probably won't be.

How accurate are these polls, do you think? Did anyone have David Tennant before we knew it was David Tennant?

But okay, let's say, I'm going with the official list of candidates...then...

Robert Carlyle

I think he's got the best look and acting chops combo of the lot with no real baggage to unload like that Joseph fellow has...or Eccleston. :headdesk:

What confuses me are people who want him to regenerate female. I... don't think Time Lords can do that. However, I admit it'd be funny if he did and justified it by saying, "I've had it with women! I'll become one so they don't hit on my anymore. Except... the gay ones... Damnit!"

In theory, I'm dead against female Doctors, but I can't help thinking what a fabulous twist it would be if they brought Catherine Tate back to collect on her DoctorDonna prophecy.

I would buy Catherine Tate in the role, actually. It would make a sort of backwards sense. I would also buy the woman who played River Song...thereby allowing her to know his name and go on fabulous picnics with him. :hee:

All I hope is that they are as sensible as they have always been with this delicate exchange. If they are they will go in a completely different direction. Hence Joseph makes some sense...I just really didn't like him as Roderick. Of course, I wasn't supposed to like him...so good job on his part.

We don't really know if Time Lords can do that, Shen! They never have in canon, but there is lost of evidence that the outside of the Doctor doesn't need to look human. And there is also lots of fanon that isn't committed to him as a sexual being of any stripe. So...perhaps he could be female. If they were going to make him female...Catherine Tate would work. So would Sarah Parish.

Well, here's my actual logic: Time Lords, as a race, have males and females. Most people are born the sex that matches their gender identity. But even if I was born a male Time Lord and gender-identified as a female, I would regenerate as female for my second body and never need to change again. I mean, people don't just change their gender identity willy-nilly; it's generally something they have at least an inkling of in childhood and pursue seriously at or after puberty. The Doctor suddenly being female after his first millennium doesn't make any sense.

Also, more seriously, I think some of the trans community would find the idea offensive, but I'm not sure how much the BBC cares.

Big Finish did a dark comedy called "Exile" where Two regenerated as a woman (played by Arabella Weir) in order to escape the Time Lords who are after the Doctor. She ends up working in a supermarket, using the sonic to do mundane tasks and drinking to much at the pub. The scene where a man hits on her and she clobbers him because she thinks he's the Master is hysterical.

Eventually, two Time Lords (one played by David Tennant, sounding like Ten with a stick up his butt) come after her and silliness ensues. As I said, it's somewhat dark, and has some fun with the idea of the Doctor switching sexes when he regenerates. The Time Lords declare the situation "icky."

That sounds hilarious, I must say. I still don't think it'd make sense for Ten to actually gender swap (what is this, anime?), but it makes for great crack.

Hm. I think it would be amusing as all get out if they went with a female Doctor the next time around, but I doubt that they'll muck around with the formula all *that* much.

David Morrisey is awesome, but I doubt that they would pick him after...dammit, lj-cut isn't working, so I won't finish that sentence. Argh.

Robert Carlyle is a great actor, but I'm not quite sure I can see him as the Doctor.

I'd LOVE to see Eddie Izzard as the Doctor. That could be enormous fun.

I dunno...there isn't one of the bunch that is standing out to me, really. They could all probably do a good job, as long as they play to their individual strengths.

I wonder how long they'll make us wait before making the announcement?

I think Morrisey would be awesome, too. I think we will probably go with a physical change. A black Doctor would certainly pose some historical challenges which the show might not feel comfortable confronting. Of course, they could completely ignore it the way they did with Martha. I don't like Joseph because of the role he already played being so off-putting. And I would much rather see Simon Pegg get the nod. I can't remember who I was rooting for before...it was one of the Weasley's from Harry Potter...one of the older brothers.

I would like someone with a bit more heft and age to him next time. Not an old guy...but someone in their 40's maybe. Though, I hear they might want to go very young, I think they run the risk of losing a bit of his gravitas. As for seeing someone as the Doctor...I don't know that we would have seen David Tennant as the Doctor before he was the Doctor.

Rae
just sick of seeing actors recast from the same show...surely there is someone we haven't had in a prominent role on Doctor Who that they can cast.

Well, they've already assured us that whoever they choose has to be able to keep up with the incredible physical demands of the show (love the running!) and I think it was RTD who said they wouldn't cast anyone older than their 40s because of this (though I've seen some pretty fit 50 year olds out there!).

Yeah, I'd rather not go too young, either. David had a very youthful energy about him and it's better for the subsequent Doctor to go in a different direction. Sameish age or older is my choice.

I hear you about the casting repeats. It seems like there's just a tiny pool of actors in the UK! lol

I bet Morrisey too. Very Moffat-ish.

Rae, I can't help but wonder if you're right about the 'fix it' between the Doctor and Rose. This seems to fit right in, but I said that before and RTD hit me in the face with...well...you know.

It does fit right in...and it even goes along with Catherine Tate and the idea of a woman. Because...what they COULD do...is have him sort of screw up the regeneration ala Romana making choices...and then have him be Catherine Tate for a bit...and also John Simm...and Morrisey and then finally pick someone to be. Someone said that he gets an alien allergy...and morphs into Catherine Tate. And well...it would be interesting to have an episode where a few people with real acting chops got to audition to play him NEXT Christmas.

You could switch the Doctor's...so that it would be 10.5's first regeneration and then it could go sort of loopy. I'm not saying this is in the cards at all...only that it would make a fun episode...and definitely get people to tune in for the event.

I would love it if Catherine Tate was the female Doctor! I have to admit when I first heard of the possibility of a female Doctor because of an allergy or cold I was struck with the 'what...?' face. I just couldn't see it in my mind. However after her performance on the show and the adorable chemistry Donna had with HumanTen I really can't imagine anyone better.

I also strive for that resolution between Rose and the Doctor. I'm rubbing Buddha's belly extra hard for good luck!

Also random comment, I found something incredibly amusing online. "A Man Who Wasn't There", someone rewrote series 2 (up until 'Girl in the Fireplace' so far) as if Nine had survived. Astounds me what creativity bursts from the human mind. Both voices, Rose and the Doctor were written extremely well it's like you hear them as you are reading.

Oh...and your money is on Morrisey? Mine is not. It's just too much of a coincidence. But then, again...it would be the perfect set up for it. I think that the reason they announced this now...is that David was about to be announced in a major film...so they needed to come out of the casting closet.

I also think with filming starting in January...we might have the new Doctor cast in a few days.

Burn Gorman?

I thought he was a charismatic actor, but as the Doctor ???

James Nesbitt is incapable of changing his Northern Irish drawl. Even when he was playing Pilate, it's ridiculous. Being from Northern Ireland myself, I'm not sure if I could deal with the Doctor not being able to free himself of the nasely vowels I have been cursed with. Would love to see James McAvoy take it up, and I'd always thought John Simm would be in contention before he played the Master - I'd love to see how they'd write him in as the Doctor.

Is this a serious set of odds? Because some of them don't make sense.

James McAvoy is not going to go back to television after the huge movie break he's had. The BBC won't take another chance on Christopher Eccleston, so I would have made his odds bigger. John Simm, Anthony Head, and John Barrowman were already on the show. Burn Gorman was Owen. Daniel Radcliffe is Harry Potter and can't act. Jason Statham won't do television when he's doing so many movie roles.

I'd be cool with Robert Carlyle being the Doctor. He's a very talented actor and not to shabby looking either.

If Rufus Sewell wasn't in the US doing his boring series, I think he'd make a very charming Doctor.

Jason Statham?!? SERIOUSLY?! WTF? Who does these polls to come up with these people? I'd have to say that it will probably be a relatively "unknown" actor, imho. *shrugs* That's just me. I'm sure whoever you think it is will probably end up being the replacement however. :)

p.s. To be random, I miss your Kara/Lee fics.
