rabid1stIt seems Moffat has been mouthing off about what his reign of terror...ehm...time as producer will mean for Doctor Who. Here is a link to an article about some of his ComicCon comments.

Nothing in this article surprised me or scared me. I have always felt and said that Moffat was the man to go forward with the show and that he would take it into territory that was less tied to the past. RTD has been celebrating Old School even as he redefined it...but he's really come to a place where he's tied all that up or is about to tie it up. This is one of the main reasons I think we are about to meet the Valeyard. He is the last big bad from Old School. The Daleks have been overused and need to toddle away for a bit...we could go another 4 years without seeing them. The Time War hasn't ended, yet, but only because 10 is so very depressed and alone.
A change in Doctor...would fix that. Not necessarily a change in actor. I'm just saying...a more "passionate clone" (And how weird a way is THAT to describe him when he is far less passionate in every way? He is a much more stable version of the Doctor, if you ask me.) could take over and make the show fun again. Maybe someone who can travel alone and doesn't really need his hand held because he's got someone in his head again. Hmmm? Well...anyway...we will see about that...
I like that Moffat does compare the Doctor to James Bond...when I have consistently said that is what we will get from him...the James Bond Doctor. He will be urbane and funny and leave people (especially pretty girls) giddy in his wake. He might even drink champagne and dance. The ladies will love him...and we might, too. He will face scary monsters...new ones...so that the eight year olds of today recall stone angels and clockwork men. I really see nothing wrong with that. I only see it as problematic when forced on such an emo character as 10 with his "never having that life."
We do have five episodes to open his eyes to how wonderful his endless life of traveling is...or one episode to let him die and be reborn as a new man...and four to learn how this new man is still HIM only better, stronger and capable of moving forward rather always living in the past.
I do think the show must move forward. I don't think all the heavy romance is sustainable. If nothing else it wittles away at the fanbase by creating shipperwars. Nor do I feel Moffat has any real talent at emo depth. I wouldn't really go with spaceBond myself...nor do away with companions...but I do think this look into the Moffat vision for the show is really consistent with the work he's given us. He's always brought in new people and new monsters and had his Doctor remain peripheral to the unfolding tragedy. His Doctor reminds me of Four...with the bright smile and slightly patronizing asides...never quite completely involved with events...yet always caring about the ones who are scared and suffering.
So...in conclusion...yes, Moffat's Doctor is going to be a bit more of a shallow character, skipping in and out of time, encountering monsters and dazzling women. He will probably make people smile more. He will probably live life day to day and be happy about it. The stories won't be so tied to the past...they will be fresh and new and maybe we won't all have so much to analyze. And yes, there is a good chance the show might tank. But that sort of depends on how the transition is handled...and who else Moffat has writing his scripts.
He's not as talented as RTD when it comes to pulling the heartstrings...or following an arc. He's not really good at continuity at all...which is why he has trouble with consistency in character. He also has that genius-writer thing that I abhor going on in his work. This is when the "genius" makes a big deal out of some set-up or other, but has NOTHING up his sleeve but his own arm.
Take this nonsense he's on with about the Doctor's "real" name...there is no way that leads to satisfaction for the audience...it's just pointless bullshit. But he thinks it is clever. Nudge. Nudge. Wink. Wink. He makes cryptic references to send the fandom scurrying about trying to make sense of his nonsense. The same is true of River Song...and the lines he drops about dancing or the Doctor being married. Still, he's the best overall writer the show has after RTD...and he is certainly going to breath some fresh air into the series...and there's nothing wrong with that...in my less than humble opinion.

Date: 2008-07-28 05:00 am (UTC)oh...and that icon of yours...says it all. AFTER 10.2 arrives...there they are...shoulders overlapping...still madly in love. If only Rose had had that moment with 10.2...the whole tone of the finale would have been different. If only they had nudged one another...or stood closer together...but they didn't...and 10.2 twice over...goes the opposite direction...moving away from her. Just as he has to be encouraged to tell her that she's getting a "gift" from her beloved at the end.

Date: 2008-07-28 02:41 pm (UTC)But you just can't keep doing things like that...you will completely undermine the show...it is one thing to do what I'm suggesting might be done...to reenergize the Doctor the same way the show already reenergized the Master...but it is quite another thing to have him falling in love with every new companion...or said companions ending up alone and heartbroken when their time with him is at an end.
Donna was stripped of the best part of her life. Rose is given a gift she never wanted...and the Doctor himself...loses the one thing...just one...that he believed in...HER. This isn't something we can just keep doing over and over again...I can't believe there are people thinking anyone can invest emotionally in a companion after this.

I guess it will still be interresting to watch, but I'm not sure we'll care as much as we did for Rose, Jackie, Donna, ...

So, I'm not sure if all of this means anything good for the people we have come to love so dearly. For me, though, it all depends on the Doctor being healed of his self-destructive, lonely god ways. Because shallow relationships poured over a base of heartbreak...is really nothing but a recipe for personal dysfunction.
