So, I am struggling to resist the spoilers that are everywhere now. But I keep taking these little squinty-eyed looks at the cover art and graphics people have captured from recent UK magazines. Anyway, in one of my squinty-views I noticed this non-spoiler side-bar about Rose Tyler's defining moment in the eyes of RTD...and...well...I peeked.
And how about that! RTD and I would pick the same Rose-defining moment.
Not to worry, there are no spoilers under this cut...
Those of you who have listened to me rant over the past couple of years will probably remember the stock I put in The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit for defining the Doctor/Rose relationship. I feel that we can learn a lot from the Doctor suggesting the proper house with carpets and doors and from Rose saying she wasn't going to leave him even if he was dead.
In my opinion, anyone who knew the Doctor even a little bit should have been startled by him 1) asking his companion what they should do next with their lives and 2) upon being told that what they would do is "Find a planet. Get a job. Live a life, same as the rest of the universe." responding that he would have to get a house, a proper house with carpets and doors.
What the Doctor would have said to anyone else is..."Oh, we can find a way to keep traveling, look at this space station." Only Rose could suggest a settled life and get his complete cooperation.
Meanwhile, Rose makes the decision that "stuck with him that's not so bad." And offers up her classic, "Everybody leaves home sometime." And there it is...he is willing to settle and she is willing to leave her Mum behind. And when her beloved is lost, she is going to stay with him even though she will die and that's the last thing he would want.
RTD calls Rose's singlemindedness both selfish and selfless...and it is...because, of course, the Doctor would rather she lived a full, rich and happy life. It is selfish of her to risk herself and not think of the other people wanting to leave and how they would feel abandoning her. We see this too in her treatment of her mum and Mickey from time to time. Rose is flawed but fundamentally lovable, because she is also so very selfless. It is typical of her to remain fiercely loyal and to think of her beloved first. She knows the Doctor needs her and she won't leave him all on his own. This is exactly the same selfless/selfish act the Doctor performs when he seeks to send Rose to another universe to be safe. He only knows that he wants her safe and that's selfish...but then...he will be so very hurt by losing her and he believes what he's doing is for her own good (he believes she would regret losing her family and wouldn't really choose him over her mother)...so selfless, as well.
Anyway...I love that RTD got the same message from the same scene.

hoping RTD and I agree on many things about Rose and her Doctor, especially how they should go off into the sunset together for a happy life.

Date: 2008-06-19 01:46 am (UTC)Well, look at him storming back to the surface when Rose seems in danger...telling Ida "Oh, she knows"...being blackmailed by the Beast with the one bit of leverage this mindreading creature believes will stop him...a threat to Rose...then telling the Beast..."I believe in her."
Then, there is Rose...fighting the fight all on her own...defending people, saving them, just like he would have done if he'd been there...fighting for the underdog, saying they can't shoot Toby...figuring out what to do next...standing her ground and refusing to leave her beloved Doctor...and then killing the Beast.
They so kick ass...Rose and Ten. The stuff of legends indeed!

What?!? What?!?
(Admitting that these were my favorite episodes primarily because Murray Gold re-scored the music for them -- for the first time all season. Earlier s2 eps recycled the music from s1, which was CE's season. Finally giving Ten and Ten/Rose their own musical themes made all the difference for me.)

Date: 2008-06-19 03:29 am (UTC)That's what I love about her, too. That's what I love about the Doctor, as well...I don't love the Godly Time Lord in him...I don't love him being magnificent...I love him being clever and curious and cute and vulnerable.
And yes, I like being proud of him when he saves the day against all odds...but I don't like to think of him as a God-Figure.
I love him like Rose loves him...with his flaws...and I want to see him happy and taken care of for a bit...I want to think of him lounging on his coat, getting warm hugs and having his hair affectionately ruffled...and so it is no surprise that I love Rose Tyler.

And link back from the fiction page. A few resent things haven't been linked from there though so the fiction-doctor who tag on the sidebar is your best bet. And I like your bff.
