Okay, this is NOT A SPOILER POST...do not spoil me with your inside knowledge of photos posted or conversations overheard...or whatever.
This is pure Rabid Speculation on what I expect from S4's final 5 episodes, with a bit of special concentration on today's UK episode...which I haven't seen, yet. I kept hesitating about posting this because....
SIGH! Well...you've all heard my core theories before...and, frankly, I've been wrong so often about the shape of RTD finales that I feel I am tempting fate to post any speculation at all about this one.
But, since I've never let common sense stop me before...
...first, let me say...I don't know what's going on with the big season arc. I don't know how RTD plans to accomplish any of his storyline goals. This is why I took up What Wild Geese Know after the fact...I figured I would give RTD lots of elbow room to work this all out. But...I feel the Doctor/Rose love story needs to accomplish a few things and those things are likely to freak out some of my fellow D/R shippers (not unlike Rose becoming a fish and the Doctor becoming a troll in Disheveled freaked out some of my readers).
So, after a lovely bit of wild speculation about River Song (Is she Jack? Is she Jenny? Is she the DoctorDonna?)I return to my initial idea for the shape of the Rose/Ten ship and to my belief that River is the "road not taken." This means that River should give the Doctor some indication of the life he would lead if he went on as he's always gone on...moving and changing and aging and fighting other people's battles. The Doctor River knows will be harder and colder, I think. He will long ago have given up the hope of peace or happiness.
But he will indeed find someone, maybe a lot of someones, that he likes very well. What he will not find is a home again or someone who can make him whole. So, it's not so bad in the future...but it's not satisfying either. The Doctor of our time is left with an overwhelming feeling of sadness and disenchantment. Even though he will tell Donna (who is worried about her imminent doom) that the future is always in flux and they can still change it, he will be gloomy.
Meanwhile, Rose is fighting the good fight in her universe. I still believe that, as part of her ongoing attempts to reach the Doctor, she will find a way for them to switch universes. It might happen accidentally, though. This will be our Doctor-lite episode...he will interact with Jackie and Mickey and Pete or Jake while Rose interacts with Donna. Both of them will discover, without talking things through, that the other one is sad, stressed and lonely. The Doctor will take this knowledge particularly hard...as he loves Rose and wanted so much to believe she was better off away from him. This, I believe, is why he looks so dejected in that "Rose is coming back" clip in the trailer...even though he is happy she's coming...why she's coming has him devastated.
Finally, the kiss...and how to avoid it for as long as possible while squeezing the most squee you can into every moment. I think that RTD will do everything he can to keep us waiting for that kiss. For example, sending the Doctor to Rose's World while she's in his. So they can touch each other's stuff and feel all shivery. I say, bring it on. The more RTD does to avoid the payoff, the more cheerful I get about the nature of the payoff...because that is classic storytelling. You dangle hope at the end of a long line for your viewers.
But why do it? WHY? Why can't we have our happy moments early and often?
Setting aside the fact that every moment the Doctor and Rose are within sight, reach or rumor of one another will be a happy moment for them...
It's because you can't have the Doctor and Rose shagging like bunnies on the TARDIS console at 7:00 pm. Mums would have to send their little ones off to bed and then sit down and write stern letters of reproof.
You keep your lovers apart because you know that when they finally come together sparks are going to fly. It is the underlying premise of this kind of tease...that there is something on the line that is very yummy. The unspoken subtext is that the Doctor and Rose also long to have a private moment together so they can shag. So, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Doctor and Rose snatched away from one another just as they first have a scene together, then wild events coming between them so they haven't a moment to think, let alone spoon, then Rose giving in to total exhaustion and tears and needing comfort more than kisses. Then...the end of the universe as we know it demanding that one or both of them make the ultimate sacrifice.
Then...the last minute reprieve...and our kiss.
And...here's hoping...the happy ever after scenario.
I'm just saying.

Date: 2008-06-07 05:08 pm (UTC)It is necessarily to do something gut-wrenching because the Doctor is very selfless and self-sacrificing and he will not think of himself before others. However, he might think of Rose before others...he might see what is happening to her and feel enough empathy to realize his own pain.
And that might be enough to make him seek his own rest cure.

Date: 2008-06-07 03:25 pm (UTC)These clues, and the fact that they remain mostly hidden from the Doctor, should help us form a subconscious opinion as viewers...that we want the Doctor to find another way to have a family.

Date: 2008-06-07 04:19 pm (UTC)I'm incredibly excited about "Midnight" especially, because I think that will ratchet the pre-reunion tension up to 11 for the Doctor and we'll come very close to seeing him lose it completely.

Date: 2008-06-07 05:04 pm (UTC)This was my initial feeling as well...that we would have an alternative future or something for Christmas. I've been calling it the "It's a Wonderful Life" scenario...but now, with River, and the "path not taken" situation coming up...I wonder if RTD doesn't have some other way to have his cake and send the Doctor to Rose, too.
As I said, above, I hesitate to get into the particulars of what's going on...because I don't really know enough to even speculate properly. But it is good to have someone who has a little more knowledge than me not telling me I'm a loon. I tend to get laughed at when I speculate about television shows.
Rae
happy to know that Midnight seems exciting...I do think that it is time to start shaking the Doctor up...because he needs to change his entire outlook on his life if we are going to have the happy...and I DO, honestly, believe changing his outlook on life will be good for him and the show.

Date: 2008-06-07 06:03 pm (UTC)I like the idea.
Thats all I got... because I haven't watched "Silence" yet (I'm waiting for "Forest" today). I agree with some of what's been said though. The Doctor needs a shock to the system to get out of his "emo-ness" Not that I don't love it... but for the sake of the show... the Doctor can't keep sinking further each time Rose or Gallifrey is mentioned. One burden needs to be lifted from the weight of the Universe that he carries. It doesn't have to be completely... just something minor (like a kiss) or something to show that no matter what someone out there loves him... becuase the Doctor forgets that.

Date: 2008-06-07 07:42 pm (UTC)And, no, I haven't watched it, yet. I'm at work and I have to see what my cousin in the UK can do for me about this one anyway...as I'm not traveling this weekend.
Rae
possibly on AIM later though if you need to talk around any plot points without giving things away. :chuckle:

Date: 2008-06-07 08:54 pm (UTC)I think maybe I ought to just let someone run my comm and stop having anything to do with this whole mess until the finale is done so I can "read the ending of the book" and know if it's safe to come back out again (or stay permanently in denial.)
Will "loiter" around in the virtual space of AIM for a while then when it's cooled off to below 90 (after 7pm) must go try to make my back yard look non-ugly (hates cutting grass back there).

Date: 2008-06-07 11:18 pm (UTC)They could if they made a cameo on Torchwood. Everyone shags everyone on that show. ;) But, I don't know think the BBC would be okay with that either.
Here's another thought, which is probably totally wrong because I didn't watch the episode yet. River as Rose. River Song. Wasn't there a period where Rose was associated with music? I can't remember...

Date: 2008-06-07 11:25 pm (UTC)Lol, I just finished today's episode and immediately wanted to read your thoughts and reactions for revelations made. Its great cause even if I don't think that is what's happening or going to happen it always makes me pause and think about the show differently. ;)
