Wow! I finally got an answer to a query I posted at the Official BBC Doctor Who website. Actually, it was an immediate answer. Usually, I'm politely ignored. But then, mostly, I don't ask a straightforward question. So, what I asked was, "Are there plans to market John Smith's Journal from Human Nature?"

And...they tell me there were plans to add to the pages and publish but those plans fell through. Currently, they are looking to put the existing bits online. But that won't happen until Summer, if it happens at all.

I know this is probably because contract negotiations take time and there are other priorities for the BBC. But part of me thinks that the time could be to link up with storyline..as the existing pages tell us more about the Doctor's feelings for Rose than the PTB are comfortable revealing at this juncture. Am I wrong to think that?

That's a shame. It does, however, make the one [livejournal.com profile] todd_loves_mc made for me all the more special. :)

I wonder if these other priorities for the BBC include other merchandise to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Doctor Who, coming up in November?

In the meantime, we shall have to console ourselves with the fob watch.

I agree with you. They must be holding out because of something.

There were indeed plans last year to print the journal up in a really nice limited-edition coffee-table format (kind of like the old Griffin & Sabine books), but nothing ever came of it.

*le sigh*

I'm going to avoid stirring the waters with additional spoilery speculation, but if it's going to turn out that those missing pages from the journal are of some significance, that may be the holdup.

Oooooh, so this is why they haven't published the journal; I had always wondered what happened to those plans.

Shame there won't be a print version, but the screencapts online will still be lovely.

As for the Rose idea: I think that's wishful thinking, honestly. I sincerely doubt they would put off selling/displaying something like this just because they want to keep up some ambiguity about the Doctor's feelings. After all, this would just be something else off-screen, and RTD, DT, and JG have all basically gone on record and made the Doctor's feelings rather clear. Besides, they already put "Perfect Rose" repeatedly. Even if they added in an, "I loved and lost her," it wouldn't have changed much. Either you see the relationship, or you don't. *Shrugs*

I meant more like plot hints for the future...rather than that he loves her. Like if he has been actively searching for her or some such. Or they discuss the time war...or his children. They could pretty well add anything they like to make a more coherent whole. But it is more likely to be tied into the 45th Anniversary as Beastie remarks...and if Ten goes to Rose...there will be an upswing in interest in the pages, I bet.

On the other hand...as I said...it's still all speculation at this point as we aren't sure what's happening in S4 or what the final product we get, if we get any product, will be like.

I think I'm talking to two people at the same time. Was that response at all coherant? What I meant to say to you is...I don't think if it revealed something more about the Doctor's feelings for Rose that they would be holding it up to keep things ambiguous...but rather because there would be an upswing in interest after Rose comes back...if they are planning to do anymore Rose/Doctor publication, they would probably hold off until we see her again. This is just what the BBC tends to do...like they switched Rose-oriented novels over to Martha at the last minute just because Martha was the companion. Also, the book does seem to have several Rose-oriented pages...and could well have more information about the Doctor's feelings or Rose activities added to the book to make a coherent whole with S4 storylines. Things they didn't even have in the book before Billie signed up to return.

I think I'd agree with that, pretty much. What we've already seen of the Journal is pretty unambiguous about what Rose is to him, after all.

I was waiting for this book and now it's not going to happen :(
Maybe they didn't think it would sell enough to justify the cost of publishing? (Which is a stupid idea because I would have paid a lot of money for it and I'm a poor grad student).
