In another post...( WARNING: Voyage of the Damned spoilers in post and comments for both posts)...

http://rabid1st.livejournal.com/134254.html

I chatted on about the different types of DW kisses. And in that post, I said that the Bad Wolf kiss was similar to the Martha kiss, being a kiss for a specific purpose and therefore meaningless as a kiss. But I should have pointed out that there is one thing that differentiates Rose's Bad Wolf kiss from Martha's Judoon kiss...and that is the context of the smooch.

With Martha the context is very clear...this means nothing...I'm sorry to do this to you...please forgive my kissing you and let's move past it. The Rose kiss is given quite a different preamble...one that shows the Doctor isn't at all sorry he has to kiss her...the "that's how I feel" and the throaty growl of "Come 'ere." (Which HAS to be one of Chris E.'s sexiest moments.)

Also, I think I left out one other kind of kiss in the last discussion...a type we might get to see again in S4. The Joan and John Smith kiss is a particularly sweet one, and it has meaning, but it is an "under a spell and not his true self" kiss. I think it is possible they will play that card again, before Tennant leaves. Have him swayed by an alien potion or power so that he is compelled to give up the kisses. Thus allowing him to kiss someone else. But I still believe they are saving the real "romantic for sure" kiss for Rose Tyler.

I wouldn't say it's "not his true self", I'd say it's more like a true different self - it may not have been The Doctor, but it was the true John Smith.

I really hope you're right! I don't see a Doctor/Rose reunion without a real romantic kiss... and real snow!!!

I mean it's not the Doctor. It is certainly the John Smith part of the Doctor and everything John Smith was capable of...the Doctor was capable of, too...but as Joan and the Doctor both point out...the Doctor isn't John Smith and he doesn't love Joan. So, the kiss...while sweet and genuine in context...doesn't qualify as the Doctor kissing someone he WANTS to kiss.

And I feel that we may get another of that type of kiss in this season...perhaps due to alien intervention. Like...if the Rani comes back...then the Doctor might fall under her spell and kiss her in a romantically, sweet way...yet, be able to cast off the spell and be himself again. The watch acts as a sort of "spell" on the Doctor in Human Nature...convincing him that he is someone else.

Actually, Joan is very like Astrid and Reinette...they are people he could GROW to love, but he never gets the chance with them. And that is the tragic story of his life...and it really does make Rose all that much more special...because she not only was someone he COULD love...she gave him the opportunity TO love her. Unlike Joan who shows immediately that she's not suited to the Doctor's way of life...and Reinette who certainly hinted that she wouldn't be suited to it. Rose was uniquely suited to it.

Astrid might have been, too, but there...we never get to find out as she's only briefly tested and dies. This is actually how most real life relationships work as well...you meet a lot of people who you COULD work out with but things don't work out and then you meet the one who keeps working with you...growing with you...who finds a way to like who you really are...that's Rose for the Doctor.

*nods* That makes sense.
Unfortunately, you just spoiled me on the Astrid bit, as I just remembered with your post that with Christmas came the Christmas special. ^_^; Not really your fault though.

Whoops! Sorry about that! Is this a non-spoiler thread? I thought it was a VotD thread. This will teach me to answer comments from my e-mail.

I will put a warning up for others...I hate being spoiled...so I sincerely apologize for it. But the episode is well worth watching even though you are spoiled.

Oh, I don't think there's any question that there's a difference in context. If anything, the necessity gave Nine an excuse to finally snog her socks off, lol.
