Doctor Who: Christmas Special Spoilers and Speculation

News comes from the world of Doctor Who and it's frankly disappointing to me. Not for the reason you might think, though...or maybe you know me well enough to be less than surprised by...

...my disappointment in yet another well-publicized smooch. Apparently, Kylie's character Astrid shares a tender kiss with the Doctor in the Christmas Special. And I can readily see how she might have any number of reasons for doing so...I mean...it IS a Titanic episode. Though I suspect that is not really THE Titanic, poking through the TARDIS.

Still, there's the obvious end to her character right there in the premise. If she dies bravely, she might want one liplock for the road. If, as I suspect, she is a villian of some kind...she might think of the Doctor's fight for justice and such as quaint and kiss him to show there are no hard feelings. But if she too is crushing on the Doctor...or he's crushing on her...I am disappointed in RTD. We were promised a "different kind of companion" and kissing seems to me to be quite in line with two out of three. If we bung aborted companions Joan and Reinette into the mix...then it's four out of five on the unbridled desire charts.

I'm all for the David Tennant getting lip action, but this seems like stunt kissing for ratings to me. The Doctor needs to start wearing lip balm if he's going to puckerer up with this sort of regularity. I'm afraid he will do himself an injury.

I know...I know...sour grapes because he probably lurves Astrid and now Rose isn't special anymore. Whatever. I want Donna back. And please, God...no lame excuses for kissing her. Or...if there IS kissing...I want if followed up by a hearty smack to the head and a "Snap out of it!" Then, after she's clobbered Russell she can slap the Doctor around, too.

Gah. You know, I can overlook Joan; it made sense in the plot and it's not the Doctor. Reinette, not so much on the first point, but whatever, I've just chosen to block most of GitF from my memory. The Martha thing was lame, and in retrospect it's there really to help kick that unrequited love thing into gear right from the get-go; it's bad storytelling, but at least it wasn't made to be anything other than a genetic transfer on the Doctor's part. But I have to agree with you on being disappointed if there is a kiss in Voyage of the Doomed, because it's just . . . urgh.

I can understand why TPTB would want to encourage stunt kisses, because they can promote the show and bring in a bigger audience. But I really wish RTD et al. would resist doing it. It just seems so . . . lazy.

And I'm not above admitting that so much of this is because the only time Rose and Ten kissed, it wasn't exactly Rose calling the shots. [makes a face]

The news that intrigues me rather more is that Peter Davidson can't get into his Doctor costume any more.....it's Children in Need Time again! Woot!

Also, Sarah Jane kicks serious ass and my Monday nights are seriously watchable now.

Okay, so I had another thought, the only good things about this happening would be the enjoyment we could get out of all the Martha/Ten shippers getting all uppity about it. And then be like "See! Your just as 'batshipper crazy (not a term I often like to use)' as us!"

If this is true (and I really hope it isn't...this is getting silly), I can only hope it's something like a quick kiss under the mistletoe or a kiss between friends. Anything romantical and I will *not* be a happy camper.

I'm of the opinion that most of the kissing and/or deceptively romantic poses is crammed in more for misleading previews, to get people all het up (what is with my Southernisms today?)
People see the previews, are excited/upset, watch because of it, and are disappointed/relieved- but the important thing is that they watched.

I was actually pleasantly surprised to find out that Gwen wouldn't be crushing after Jack on Torchwood. They were better as just confidantes.

Okay, seriously, I've just about reached my limit of patience and understanding here. 40+ years of screen time and suddenly the Doctor can't go a few episodes without some pointless snog. WTF?! I'm sick of this. It's really making me miss the Ninth Doctor's run. At least his kiss with Rose actually meant something and wasn't some cheap cop out by the Beep to have the Doctor liplock with some tart without having to have him commit to anything (even with Rose).

I want my asexual Doctor back nao pls kthxbai. >=(

...the final Astrid kiss. But we could put it in the same category as the Nine/BadWolf kiss...in that he's helping her to let go. But I think that kiss was more along the lines of a goodbye kiss...for luck. Much like the one Astrid gave him.

I see there is going to be at least one Donna kiss...but as we can see in Disheveled...I had already assumed there would be a Donna kiss.

I think the real kiss...the kiss with intent...and love...is for Rose. Fingers crossed, we will definitely get that if we get nothing else. But I feel we will get a happy for her lifetime solution.
