Time to tell you all what the librarians on my list already know.
We've had Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince for a week.
I got my shipment last Friday. It's been there in the back of my library...lurking...naked...
unprocessed...uncatalogued...in the box it came in...
Lo' these many days.
For the most part, we librarians have been true to our sacred Scholastic Pledge: "We will not open, nor fondle, nor inhale, nor read, nor spoil, nor scan the Holy Green & Purple Book...nay nor even remove it from its UPS box...save to perform such of our librarian duties that must needs be performed on all circulating materials. This we pledge. And if ever a librarian breaks this sacred oath let him or her be cast out of the halls of early release, yes even without the protection of a sweater set, to be hunted down by Scholastic Ninjas."
So...as I say...if you have come across spoilers...look to the shiftless librarians among you.
I come not to spoil you...but to rant...
Say, today...two days before the release of HBP...you saw via the internet catalog a copy of the Holy Green & Purple Book at your local library with a READY status (meaning it is just sitting there waiting to be checked out). Would you think?
1) WOW! Nobody knows that book is READY...this is my lucky day! I'm going to power up the SUV and drive over to my local library and check it out. Nobody else has noticed it for the past 90 minutes. So, of course, they won't see it in the twenty minutes it takes to complete the drive.
2) WOW! HBP is out on the shelves TWO days early...surely there is some mistake. Maybe I'll call the library...maybe I'll call the local news channel!
3) WOW! Luckily, I am the only Harry Potter fan in this entire city. I'll go in tomorrow.
4) WOW! Some librarian really doesn't know anything about Harry Potter and has made a comical error...I will quickly call and have them hold that amazingly popular book for me. BWAHAHAHA!
5) That must be a computer error. I think I will call my library and ask a few leading questions to see if the book is REALLY there.
6) Since I know how to use a computer catalog...I know items on HOLD for other people can show up as READY...obviously this book is the most popular book in the civilized world...it is probably on HOLD or in processing...either way, no need to call because I KNOW I'm on the list and will have my copy of the book as soon as it is released on Saturday.
Hopefully...you answered 6 (or at least 5).
If you answered 1...I'm going to smack you for wasting fossil fuels.
SHEESH! What an annoying 90 minutes!
Rae
And for the curious...it was human input error on the computer.
