Okay...I admit it. I resisted. I pouted and sulked and basically made it clear I did not want to go see some macho, shoot 'em up, killer for hire flick.

But I was wrong.

This movie is slick and powerful...visceral.

Yes, things are a bit too circular in the end...but...at least, they had an explanation for the circling. And I have come to the point where "an explanation" is worth almost as much to me as "a GOOD explanation."

There was thoughtful, visible effort behind the making of this film. And Tom Cruise is downright scary in his slickly charming way. Even more astounding Jamie Fox is compelling and likable. But the main thing about this movie...is how it kicks up the style. The camera work is virtually unique...claustrophobic...it takes chances and takes you to the edge.

I kid you not. Collateral is a beautifully crafted film. It will make you squirm and also keep you well entertained. When the tension builds...you can feel it in your gut...(I did get a little nauseous...but then I was aware of the shots as they happened...and at one point they were happening in quicktime). My non-film studying companion had the required sweaty palms...so THUMBS UP for the craft.

Show of elder folk hands here: Who remembers a little show called Miami Vice? The Collateral Producer/Director is, I believe, the Michael Mann who brought us the quintessential hipness of Crockett and Tubbs. Finally, he's done it again. Check it out people. You won't be sorry.
