BROADCHURCH? What IS going on?
Apr. 11th, 2013 11:28 pmI don't know. But the time has come to tell you what I think is going on.
Spoilers under this cut...of course...
First, I should say that I have been on the same person since the first episode. More about that person later. I just did a catalogue of who it could be, and we have pretty much eliminated those people, in the same fashion I did. And, while people watching with me are not filled with an equal suspicion, they are beginning to agree with me on some things. So, I figured I would post and see if anyone else feels as I do.
I should note that while I adore David Tennant's acting, I am sniffing a bit of the Doctor in his character this time. Usually, I don't have that problem. Perhaps he sees some parallel...or, you know, the Doctor was on his mind a bit. It is more in the little mannerisms and moments than anything else.
And, I have no idea what affliction is plaguing DI Hardy. At first, I thought it was his digestion. Then, I thought it was his heart. Now, I'm thinking lung cancer or brain tumor. It seems to react to stress. Perhaps he's got something psychosomatic. LOL
The Main Suspects...as I see it are Nigel, Susan (the trailer lady), The Vicar, Danny's Dad...and my suspect.
My sister had her money on the Vicar, but I think he's in the clear now as he's been investigated.
Ditto I think for Susan. She was way too much of a red herring from the start. Just because a person acts all broody and suspicious is no reason to assume they are guilty. The skateboard seemed reason enough, though, and her hostile attiude. But I imagine that is much the same as the old newspaper salesperson. Susan changed her name and obviously doesn't want to be identified. I thought it was possible that she was doing something with young boys, after the encounter with Tom Miller at the arcade. Maybe having them sell drugs.
Nigel, the partner, and dog assassin looks very guilty of something. I think it might be poaching. I think that's why he's hiding his crossbow. And I think he is killing the dog, because Susan knows he is poaching and he's afraid of her while she has the dog. Nigel will be the suspect they narrow in on at the end. Because of the dog...and his doing something up there by the hut...and maybe they will link him somehow. But mostly they will link him because of how he looks. A think a witness is going to come forward, probably Miller's sister.
As for Danny's Dad, I bet you are all thinking he's been cleared, but he has 2 hours unaccounted for in his evening. And we do know that the early texts that Tom Miller deleted...and is now so very desperate to not have found...mentioned "DAD" and "I know what he's doing." We are expected to believe that those messages were about Mark Lattimer, Danny's Dad. But...I believe they were about TOM'S dad...
My suspect is DI Miller's husband, Tom's dad, Fred Miller. I think Danny found out something very bad about Tom's dad. And he was paid to forget about it. But, he didn't. He confronted Fred Miller and was killed. And then, Fred thought of the family boat on the beach...and tried to make it look like a suicide...by leaving no footprints or trace evidence. I would bet you those cigarettes belong to Susan, who just happened to be around at the time. Or even found the body and the skateboard. Because the skateboard could have been there at the site. Explaining why Danny was so far from the cliff. He skated off of it. But, the trailer lady took the skateboard. Tom Miller is protecting his dad from suspicion. I don't think he believes it WAS his dad. I do wonder if Susan, the trailer lady, knows something more, since she gave Tom that skateboard. If so, she is not long for this world, either, I think.
And there you have it. Next person targeted for suspicion will be Nigel. But it will turn out to be Fred Miller who killed Danny. That was him or Nigel that made physical contact with DI Miller on Monday night. If it was Fred, he could easily have called her phone to find out where she was in the dark and found she was so close he had to rush past her. Later, he will explain that he was just looking for her and will be assumed to have an alibi. Boat in the family. Tom hating Danny. Text messages we misunderstood. Computer destroyed. Access to investigation. Stood up for the innocent people as they were targeted. Could have called DI Miller quickly, to distract her. Last person she is going to suspect. Fred Miller.

Date: 2013-04-12 06:04 am (UTC)I don't think it's anyone whom the story has pointed at so far. I wonder about Ellie's nephew. The boat that burned bothers me greatly and he is connected to it, but it sounds like a lot of other people are too, including Ellie's husband. I also think that Tom knows something incriminating and it might be about his cousin, who might have put something on Tom's computer or sent him something. I also think Tom was on the skateboard in the CCTV, not Danny. The recreation with Tom riding a skateboard down the street was weird. Tom is involved somehow and I really worry for Ellie.
The problems between Susan and Nige could be a ruse to keep our attention on their odd behavior. I am still waiting on an explanation for all that money in Danny's room though. And where did Nige get 500 pounds to "bribe" Susan?
Lots of questions and only 2 more episodes to wrap all this up. It had better be great!

Date: 2013-04-12 06:13 am (UTC)I'm fairly certain that whatever is going on between Susan and Nige is just a red herring. As you say, it is too front and center to be that meaningful. Though, perhaps one or the other of them knows something that, for their own reasons, they are not sharing with the police. And I think whatever that is...it has something to do with the hut. But...as I said, I'm leaning more toward drugs or poaching.

Date: 2013-04-12 06:35 am (UTC)I think Susan knows something. I didn't like that she has a similar story to Jack Marshall's - that something happened to her and her family and she may have moved to get away from publicity, apparently even changing her name. That is how I interpreted what the local reporter confronted her with, although I haven't watched episode 6 a second time round yet so I might have misunderstood some of that part.
The hut is a mystery. I don't understand why Susan lied about Mark fixing plumbing up there.
The ending will probably be a simple case of either passions or anger gone wrong and Danny became an innocent victim. There may be only one killer, but more than 1 person is guilty of crimes here is how I see several of these people, although I can't determine what type of crimes beyond lying to the police and maybe drugs right now.

Date: 2013-04-19 10:18 am (UTC)I'm really glad that it's being shown over the pond already - interestingly, it's on ITV over here which is the Beeb's arch-rival, but I think that ITV shows do get distributed by the BBC over your way as ITV doesn't seem to have much of a presence there.

Date: 2013-04-19 05:08 pm (UTC)I had not seen Episode 7, but I did just see it. HA! I knew Nigel was a poacher. When I told my sister, she had never heard of poaching. Well, she was aware of the word, but didn't realize it still happened in England. I said, "No, poaching is a thing that still happens in England." And voilĂ . Also, Nige couldn't kill the dog. So, I figure Susan has nothing to worry about with him.
And I didn't imagine SHE would be our eye witness...but I have no doubt that she saw Fred Miller's bald head and thought it was Nige. She simply had her vision impaired by the dark and her own fears about her son turning out like his dad.
I do hope DI Hardy doesn't die trying to save Miller from her husband. He should get his pacemaker and let her take point in the next case. I want them to continue as partners for another series. This one has been very good. Even though I had my suspect early on, because I could see the shape of the story from the initial characters, I can't say that it has been obvious...only textbook. However, I did see that my suspect is the frontrunner in the betting now. I wonder what sort of odds I could have gotten at the start?

Date: 2013-04-19 05:10 pm (UTC)As for the money, I'm still thinking it was a pay off. But it could also have simply come from the poaching. And I have to wonder if Fred Miller went with the gang on those shooting sprees. Or if Danny found out that Fred abused Tom on one of them?

Date: 2013-05-26 04:44 am (UTC)Joe Miller is Ellie's husband
Tom is their elder son; Fred is the baby.
