If you were to take Rose out of the picture in Disheveled, I think you would see the TARDIS personality as much closer to IDRIS. I think that Gaiman's fanfiction perspective was that Rose didn't belong in the story and he wanted to show the TARDIS as the full alternative personality. What would happen if there was no Rose, but you could create a humanoid interface for the TARDIS?
And then he gave it all sorts of Gaiman embellishments, because it isn't the same story at all. Well, except for the connection of thread to the other universe part. It is great fanfiction because it used the two sources as jumping off places for new ideas. And when it comes to the Fan Fiction Kerfuffle, I think that's the dividing line, for me. Is the Fan Fiction the product of another writer's imagination, or is it a way to exploit the original writer's greater creativity?
