First, I want to wish everyone in the path of Irene a safe haven for the storm. Afterward, I hope you all get power and water and internet access in record time.

Second, there are some Doctor Who rumors that I want to speculate about...under this cut.

It seems Rose, Donna and Martha are all going to be making cameos in Let's Kill Hitler. I know that they all have connections to the events in Germany via episodes, so I wonder if part of the cameo will be how changing this event will alter other ones. Like Rose and by association the Doctor might never have met Jack if it were not for Hitler. ETC.

I heard that Moffat put out some false spoiler news (on purpose). I think it's this because I don't think Rose would leave him if she could get to him again (and of course I don't think Donna would just sit at home. She would want to go on adventures again).

I've heard some other news that involves River Song and the Doctor getting married (supposedly episode 13 is called "River Song's Wedding"). It could be false though. Moffat said that River Song isn't going to be leaving the show anytime soon. Other rumors include the Doctor getting a new companion in season 7 (people have speculated that it's a young River Song because of Moffat's comment about River Song not going anywhere) and because Rory and Amy won't be appearing in all the episodes.

I think I could enjoy this show more if I could actually like River Song, but she just annoys me. She's Moffat's Mary Sue and I don't understand what most of fandom loves about her (especially since a lot of them rant about how Rose was a Mary Sue and that she was "clingy" and just waited for the Doctor when River did the same thing! Yet somehow River is cool and Rose is not. Sorry I'm ranting. I never thought Rose was ever "clingy" and "needy" but apparently most of fandom and most Doctor/River shippers think so and it's annoying reading Doctor Who posts on tumblr).

Sorry for the long rant.

These could be false rumors. But I don't think it would REALLY be Rose even if the rumors are true. I think it would be something more like a dream or a simulation of Rose. Or perhaps an alternative Rose. My thought is that there are versions of all the companions stored in the TARDIS databanks, so that the Doctor could bring them up and consult with them. But it wouldn't really be Rose. My worry is that Moff and Matt would be so very ham handed with Fake Rose that it would be insulting to her. But I don't know if Billie would go along with something like that.

Bill is doing great though, now, with the announcement of Tom and Jenny I am feeling happier about her future. And I suppose that explains why she felt confident buying the Hybrid Land Rover, too.

As for your rant, I am in complete agreement. I really enjoyed Donna but I find River so pathetic that I can't enjoy her at all. She seems to have no life that doesn't revolve around waiting for the Doctor and that's something that Rose didn't do. Rose was quite pro-active in getting to him and telling him what to do. River goes over better with some people because she spends all of her time gushing about how sweet and wonderful the Doctor is and sort of mothering him. I find that attitude particularly offputting. But that's the thing about companions, some people love Romana and some people love Tegan and some of us love Rose.

I do wish the show wasn't so very precious these days. The sickening sweetness makes me gag a little. Though I found the toned down Amy easier to stomach this year. I think Moff tends to hit us over the head while screaming loudly that his Doctor is the greatest ever and his companions are the most amazing. I wish we could see a bit more amazing and stop HEARING so much about it. Like if we could see one reason why the Doctor might actually love River? I can't see even one reason...she's a know it all, maybe? Or good with a gun and a quip? She seems to me to be his inappropriately sexual babysitter.

Haven't been watching the latest DW, I admit. The latest rumours are intriguing, though the best part for me was actually looking up Billie and David news and finding out about their upcoming BBC drama.

Am also in complete agreement w [livejournal.com profile] soophelia and the weird/hypocritical River!squee/Rose!hate. I wish I could see it just as a difference of favourite companion, but it is annoying there is a LOT that River gets excused for while Rose gets pilloried for the same or less--and it makes no sense when you stop and think about Rose's age when she was traveling with the Doctor. I wish people would admit it may just be a actor preference instead of companion clinginess or whatever reason they're citing.

Personally, I've pinned my annoyance with River on the entitlement she displays around the Doctor.

On the rumours, Moffat's good at putting out false ones :/ , and I think even if Rose, Donna and Martha (all three??) were making cameos, my faith in Moffat is only enough that they're going to be written out of the Doctor's life/downplayed/treated as damsels in distress. The pattern goes that way in Moffat's work.

^This^ right here. I too haven't watched the new series. I refuse it on principle. And if everything I am hearing about River Song is true, then I most likely never will, again on principle.

The principle being Moffat's notoriously atrocious writing cliches and the fact that, having met him once, I hate the man's guts.

He better not touch Rose with a ten foot pen. Just saying.

I agree. Moff keeps telling us (in interviews) and in the show that this Doctor is the greatest and that River and the Doctor are in love, but he doesn't show us. He hasn't given us one reason why they are a great couple. (Some people have said they belong together because River is half Time Lord/Lady because of her parents having sex in the Tardis when it went through the vortex. If that had happened to Rose, people would have said she was a Mary Sue, but because it's River, apparently it makes her cool or something. Double standard if you ask me.)

What do you think about River being part Time Lord?

She seems to me to be his inappropriately sexual babysitter.

I agree.

Moff said that the Doctor loves River because she's a "bad girl." I don't know about that. I It seems Moff is trying too hard with that.

Moff's female characters (Reinette, Amy, River) seem to have a lot in common I've noticed: the Doctor knows them when they are children, they wait for him because they love him, but they themselves don't have any defining characteristics of their own (other than waiting for the Doctor) and being pretty.

I love that RTD's companions didn't wait for the Doctor. They did other things and had lives (even Donna, who was stuck in a rut). Even though I didn't always like Martha, I understood her and connected with her. With Moff's companions (and even the Doctor), I don't feel any connection, warmth or reason to care about them.

I'm looking forward to the day that Moff hands the reins over to someone else. I like Paul Cornell, Toby Whithouse and Mark Gatiss, but I'd welcome anyone at this point to take over.

This. Such a good point. And they all made moves on the Doctor as well. On one hand you got people (usually men) cheering this (See? "Strong" women who know what they want and go for it! Why can't all wimmmen jump on the menz so they don't have to confuze poor men with dating and harassment lawsuits?). The flip side is only apparent if you question why you can't have different, rational strong women with other reactions. I just read someone's--really good!--post on how to fix Season Five and how Moffat has a strong All Women Are Shrews Who Want to Trap Men in Marriage theme. I thought it wasn't *that* bad, but then again, it is kinda there. (Calling the women shrews just seemed too strong, though, in the aforementioned overthinkingit.com post.)
