SUPERNATURAL 6x01 and a vid rec

So, I came across this fantastic vid that takes you through most of SPN to the finale of S5. I love this song for the show and I love the way this vidder has created such brilliant edits to give even newcomers to the show a sense of the emotional heart of the Winchester's extended family. It is a fast paced vid and lots of fun, even if emotionally wrenching in some places.

I have no patience for a humorous review of the episode. But I will say that there are things I adore about the opening montage. I love the song. I love the black and white. I love the domestically resigned Dean and how his old life is compared to his new life. Most of all I loved how the show made it clear how hard it is to let go of your culture. I think that idea does permeate the atmosphere of the episode. And so, I have a feeling that what someone called the depressing conclusion that you CANNOT escape your past, is the one we will come to eventually.
But here, Dean does manage to escape somewhat from the Sons of Deliverance. Okay, I said I wasn't going to be silly. But I couldn't help hearing Dueling Banjos in my head whenever I saw Sam the Campbell family. I like them though. I like that hillbilly sensibility they have going on and I like that Grandpa is still not trustworthy. I don't trust any of them. I wonder about the female cousin...and Lisa...is this SPN presenting respectable women for once? Or will they become demon fodder or demons themselves before too long? I would hope that Lisa will simply find that she cares about her son too much to let Dean stay with them forever. Dean might also find that he cares too much as well. Though I also hate the "I'm leaving you for your own good" storyline that tends to go hand in hand with SciFi narratives.
I didn't think much of the Djinn. They seemed quite lame and nearly powerless. I did really enjoy the sense of something lurking that we had in Dean's everyday life. And I liked his hunting a Yorkie. I liked his buddy/neighbor (I think that was the same guy)...and I really did expect he would turn out to be a demon. So, I'm very happy that it was all Dean paranoia...even if it was helped along by Djinn poison. I am sorry that the neighbor is dead. I feel it would have added to the whole mythology if Dean's neighbor thought there was a home invasion or something and Dean went all commando. Talk about awkward explanations at a later time.
I liked Bobby being the person that Dean could trust. But I didn't like him keeping Sam's secret from Dean. I can see Bobby doing that, urging Sam to tell, but I would have rather had Sam on his own and not sneaking back to Bobby. I suppose they did that to make Dean more of an outsider...like Sam was in the first season. I'm glad though that Dean dealt with the suggestion that he was soft pretty firmly. And I was glad to see he kept the holy water close and a devil's trap under the welcome mat. Some things should remain the same.
Overall, I am cautiously optimistic about the new season. I don't feel any real excitement, yet. But I think they made some intelligent choices and nothing put me off of the show. I'm just not sure I will like it, yet. I need a few more episodes to make up my mind.
