David Tennant's Post Who Career Update
Jun. 15th, 2010 10:54 pmRecently, David's name was linked with the Dreamworks remake of a schlocky film of yesteryear, "Fright Night." This post isn't about that. It's about the article below...but...loads of people have come out of the woodwork to deride David for taking on the role that was once played by Roddy McDowell.
"Is this why he left Who?" they cry in completely ignorant and petulant fashion.
As if David somehow should be lumped in with those no talent fame seekers who reach beyond their little TV show. Or as if, because he was so good as the Doctor, he has to remain in the show beyond the point where it does his career any good. David had a pretty stellar career before the Doctor and the question for him was "Would playing the Doctor destroy it?" But, all that said, I do wish that Hollywood would wake up to his undeniable talents as a leading man and offer him better roles.
Still, they are not likely to do so on the strength of Doctor Who. Even an ardent fan like myself knows that Doctor Who is a very marginal cult show when it comes to ratings in America. Though it is a beloved show and more respected now than ever before. But even if David was as conventionally hot as Jamie Bamber...he still would be hard pressed to get work in the US of A...where money and box-office power are worth a lot more than talent.
THIS is the way to move up and get noticed in Hollywood.

David Tennant has been nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actor In A Mini-Series Or A Movie category and has been nominated twice - for the role of Arthur Eddington in Einstein and Eddington and for the title role of Hamlet.
Currently there are 30 actors nominated in this category and David faces some stiff opposition as he is up against, among others, Ian McKellen, Al Pacino, Chiwetel Ejiofor and also Andy Serkis for Einstein and Eddington.
David being listed (not once but twice) in such grand company is sure to get him noticed by the right people at the right time. This is far better news than the pilot of Rex was.

Date: 2010-06-16 05:43 am (UTC)Speaking of getting noticed, my sister told me that when her family was watching Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire the other day, my little nephew piped up..."That's the Doctor!"...when DT came on screen. My sister was like...what?...looked at it more closely and realized he was right! Hee! He's cameo-spotting now! XDDDD

Date: 2010-06-16 04:09 pm (UTC)I am so happy that David is on the list twice. I think if he gets the nod it will be for Hamlet, because voters are more likely to be familiar with it. But the main thing is that the television producers are bound to notice that he is there 2 times among a short list of 30 names. They are going to ask themselves, "Who the hell is David Tennant?" And go find out what all the fuss is about...and voila...David has the best sort of exposure to be offered a GOOD television deal in America.
Of course, I am assuming he is willing to put in the grueling time for a series. I know he doesn't mind the work and he seems willing enough to relocate or travel...but I do wonder if he would be happy over here if he has a commercial success. He likes to disappear and avoid any personal questions. Of course, maybe he could disappear with more ease if he was careful about it. And even if had a show with a 7 or 8 year run...he would be free to return to England and the stage before he was 50. David likes to work, but also to challenge himself...and series TV doesn't often offer challenges beyond the third year.

torn between wanting him to have all the success his talent deserves and wanting him to stay the same unaffected David that charms me so much.

always hoping for another Tennant/Piper project. Of course, I would love one in which we learn that Ten2 is really truly Ten and he and Rose are happily united in Pete's World.
