And this time I really AM...very positive!

You know, I've been down since...well...Journey's End. And Children of Earth seemed to kick me off the ladder just as I'd managed to climb up, rung-by-rung, toward distant hope. And I've been very hard on old Russell. Sort of joining in on the burning of him in effigy. Which is rather unfair of me as I would have done bad things to Jack/Ianto one day myself, had I been walking a mile in RTD's extra large loafers.

But what I know to be true...is still true...I believe...and that is what Julie Gardner says here...

Gardner gave a lot of credit to the appeal of the show to “great actors we’ve had led by David and Chris (Eccleston)” and to Russell T. Davies for creating the tone of the show and its “very optimistic, very romantic, very life affirming tone.”

Russell is the one who wrote the Doctor/Rose love story for 4 seasons. And he knows he ended it poorly in JE. And he even knows the reason why it was a poor job...that he was taking Rose out of character...and...that he was limiting the scope of the show for no good reason. Look at this NEXT line by Gardner...

She went on to add that she felt another appeal of the show is that it has a “format that can tell any story” and that it therefore is a format that can survive.

There it is in a nutshell. When they said, you can't have the Doctor stay with Rose...you are saying that you can't tell this story. And...I do have hope that in their hearts nobody connected with New Who...wants to say that.

Tennant interjected that it couldn’t be said enough times how Doctor Who’s successful return was due in large part to Gardner’s, “indefatigability and life and intelligence and brilliance and strength” and that it would not be “the sensation it is” without her.
Gardner finished by saying, “I think it is really a show made with absolute love. There will always be differences about choices made, particularly in a show that’s got such a big fan base. But I really think everyone one of the crew, every single member of that crew, and people coming in were so hopeful for it, and love it so much, I think that came through, as I think it sometimes does.”

And you know what is also true...Julie is absolutely devoted to the idea that Ten loves Rose. She is the one who keeps telling us that "absolutely he did say it." She and Billie Piper are both hugely influencial in the development and success of this series. And both of them were unhappy with the end of JE. Both of them are convinced that what Ten/Rose have is a love story. So, yes, I am hopeful that their reactions (if not their out and out protests and lamentations) inspired Russell to go back and take another stab at his "happy" ending.

I want to believe that it is true that Doctor Who can tell any kind of story. That the Doctor can be or do anything, because he's the Doctor...not a god, but a marvelous and compassionate person. It won't always be RTD at the helm...so it won't always be the story of the Doctor in love. But, I do have some hope that RTD can admit, in canon, for all the world to see, that he was telling THAT story. That he is a sappy, life-affirming romantic at some level of his being. All the Who Crew needs is the courage to finish the story they've been telling all along, the story RTD, himself, admits he can't stop writing..."the story of the Doctor in love." Because that story isn't about Rose having a normal life. It is about the Doctor. It is a story about a fundamental change in the way the Doctor views his place in the universe...what is possible for him. It is about tasting the strawberries of life, instead of always passing them by. And that story, the love story, has a happy-for-Rose's-lifetime ending as its true and proper end.

who knows that RTD loves Doctor Who...and only hopes he has enough belief in the ability to tell ANY story to do his story justice.
