We writer types, we like to pretend we do all of this meticulous interweaving of storyline threads, but all too often we are just writing off the top of our heads. I'm not saying we don't have our evil plans and our genius-y moments.
But, I know, I've had lines quoted to me that I wrote...and I go..."Wow! That's good. Who wrote that?" <<--totally oblivious is what I'm saying.
Fans analyze and obsess and hang on every word, looking for clues about plot, but mostly writers just get it down while the idea is percolating around in our heads.
However, while I am the first to admit that I'm NOT intensely aware of everything I write...I do actually put a lot of forethought and foreshadowing into my stories. I write with intention. And, as you all know, I believe Russell also writes with intention. So...imagine my surprise tonight...as I am sitting here listening to the very first episode of New Who..."Rose"...to have a reference to Journey's End.
And it really would not be so very surprising if RTD planned where he was going before he began his story.
We must remember what a huge risk New Who was at the outset. So, if RTD went in with his fanboy enthusiasm bolstering him, but the economic reality that the show might tank...he'd scope it all out ahead of time. He had a story to tell...this one particular story about this one particular companion...Rose Tyler, who healed the Doctor's wounds after the Time War and loved him completely. He would probably have an end to that story in mind. I know I would.
Now, that end might change as the show continues to evolve. But RTD knew he would leave at some point...and he may well have known what he wanted to say at the end. He says the end has changed very little for him...only who is where and why.
Clive says, "He has one constant companion." Rose asks, "Who?" And Clive says, "Death."
Dalek Caan says..."Everlasting death to the most faithful companion."
And in School Reunion...the Doctor points out...that his long life is a curse that those he loves wither and die, while he regenerates.
RTD points out...that death does follow the Doctor around...and the show is in many ways horrific. And there are many references in the text to this grim side of the Doctor.
The idea of the Doctor's song coming to an end...has been largely accepted by the fandom to mean he will regenerate. But...I maintain that it is the
"lonely, lovelorn, death is my constant companion" song which must come to an end.
Facing death...a permanent death...taking on a human body and living that life...would bring everlasting death to his most faithful companion. What I am saying...is Eleven (Ten 2) has had to deal with this concept for a bit! If he came back, he would understand the consequences of his lifestyle on other people. If he switches places with Ten...the Doctor of old would die and a new song would begin. It comes back again to the concept of HOPE! Is the Doctor going forward as a monstrous god figure, forever alone and apart from his "children of time"...or is he more of a guide for us. Is his constant companion death...or hope?

putting far too much thought into a line from a very early episode...but still...
