Okay, I am so sick of movies sold on the strength of their supposed "twists" that I never even bothered to go see Hancock once I heard it was one of those films. TWIST? Gag me! Was about the sum of my reaction. But it's out on DVD...and I was bored...so WTH!

I had heard that the "twist" had something to do with Cherise Theron and nobody wanted to discuss it in case they messed up the movie for people...but OH...OH, THEY WERE SHOCKED. So, my overactive imagination (You all know that imagination, right?)had decided that the "twist" was that Hancock wasn't a superhero at all...but instead was some hobo who had been infected with some supermojo so that Cherise Theron could live out her days as a happy housewife.

Needless to say...that is NOT the supposed "twist!" But I will say this...that was a fantastic movie. And I don't have any idea what all the fuss was about with people "feeling let down" and "cheated" and all of that crap. Because what happens in Hancock is beautiful and completely true to the storyline and not a "twist" at all. There is no twist in this film. None. Nada. Zip!

Seriously, what film were those people watching? Within two seconds of Cherise Theron making her entrance, I knew what was going on in the storyline. And it played out exactly as it should play out. I loved the way it played out...so true to the concept of superhero films...and yet, new and interesting.

Now, maybe those of you who know me as an ubershipper will be surprised that I wasn't pulling for the traditional happy ending of say the Bad Wolf and her Doctor...but I was pulling for the very ending this movie delivered. Because this movie delivered the proper ending. It's like I always say...stories have proper endings. They go somewhere. They don't have to have a happy ever after. This is not to say that you should push for "horrible break up of doom" every time either. Angst without end or say, "Bad Wolf Bay 2", serves no purpose and is just as stupid in my opinion as the magic happy for two people who in no way can stand one another.

This was a love story with so much dimension and a sort of small human story too...I thought it was fantastic. And everyone in this film got robbed of the adulation they deserved for it. Man! That was a great movie. How could people miss how really good it was? I suppose they were somehow hoping for more...more funny...more tragedy...more angst? I don't know. But I tell you, if you haven't seen Hancock...just go in thinking there's not much of a twist and enjoy what it says about superhero movies.

I enjoyed it too! My friends disagreed. I think they thought it got too serious, or maybe people see something as a twist and automatically get uppity about it nowadays. Shamylan's fault, I suppose.

Or just ruined expectations, if they wanted a superhero comedy with no depth. But I thought it was neat. Definitely original!

Yeah...that's what I enjoyed about it...it was original. And Will Smith really acts up a storm in it. And well...my other half, he knows nothing at all about it...and he easily saw the thing with Theron coming. He's not even a storyteller...but he sees it in the text.

Yeah, I think people had the wrong expectation...that's the only explanation I can come up with for why they didn't love it. I mean...yes, it isn't like the usual superhero stuff...nor is it funny...nor is it particularly twisty. It is just a very poignant and original storyline. And I loved that. So, you and I will have our own camp for the celebration of original material, because there should be a camp for that. Also, RTD needs to come visit us before he goes off and does the same old thing with the Doctor again.

Yes! I really loved Iron Man, too! I think that the same sort of vibe is going on there. Though Hancock was even more original and so it very much pleased me. Also, I liked that they neatly telegraphed what was going on with Hancock. As I said, I would say it was completely untwisty. It followed a thought line through to the finish and it was a good, solid finish. It was the right ending. And I found myself thinking..."What? Are people just not used to things working?"

Given how much grief I get over the simple solution to the Ten/Rose storyline...I think it has to be that audiences are not used to having a story follow a through line. I mean, saying it's impossible for things to work when it isn't the least little bit impossible...is like calling what happened in Hancock a "twist." Some things are like...completely sensible...and the ending we have for Ten/Rose is the ridiculous one.
